David’s entire life for as long as he could remember has been a gruesome nightmare stuck in a cruel concentration camp with many evil guards. In this inspiring, award-winning novel, “I Am David,” David, a twelve year old boy encounters many hardships. From quickly trying to escape his camp, travelling across the border to a ship bound for Italy, trudging through snowy lands, and even getting the amazing privilege to witness the most beautiful lands and villages he has ever seen, his one and only hope is to be free. David makes his “home” comfortable, trying to keep them off of his mind as much as possible. During his first visits among the town, he finds a church. David is crazily attracted to this church’s beauty but he is afraid to enter. After he encounters this graceful church, it inspires David to pray. That night, after David finally begins to recognize and know his way around the town, he hears some of the citizens speaking about him and where he came from. After he hears this, David decides he will have to leave before the citizens of the village notify them. Once David runs off that night, he confronts many friendly travelers. David finds simple ways to make money, and he is able to get a “lift,” from the travellers towards Denmark. David enjoys yummy food, he gets to read, he gets nice clothes, and he comfortably enjoys a new bed. David is stolen by a farmer and he is treated like a slave. They are planning for him to work all winter and then they will turn him into the police by spring.
