When compared to the Bible, one is able to see the hypocrisy between the Evangelist’s voicing their political opinion to the command of the Bible. Teachings like “be subject to rulers and authorities, be obedient, and be ready to do whatever is good,” Titus 3:1 and the story of the lame beggar in Acts 3 have been completely set aside it seems in these Evangelist’s social media posts and teachings. We see this become more prominent in Christian Leader, Franklin Graham, when he continually takes to Facebook, a social media website, to discriminate and marginalize against Muslims using the words “threats” and “people with hate-filled hearts” to describe “all” Muslims and Muslim Americans alike. When we compare Acts 3, the story of how Peter and …show more content…
Franklin Graham in a public Youtube, a social media website filled with videos from various sources, video Franklin Graham urges other Evangelists and Christian pastors to “Don’t shut up. If they want to run you out of Church don’t let them [ homosexuals and those who have had abortions]. God will bless you if you speak out on these issues. It is a sin.” In Philippians 4:9, Paul tells the people “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me -- put it into practice,” and in Matthew when Jesus is giving his Sermon on the Mount, directly saying “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of you Father in heaven,” one is able to see the juxtaposition between Graham and the word. He urges Christians to “shut up” and to not let homosexuals and people who have had abortions run them [Christians] out of the church, when the word tells him to “love his neighbor as Jesus has loved him,” John 15:12 and to put whatever is taught by Jesus whether directly or indirectly into practice in everyday life. This is what he should be teaching, not the word of
2) Edwards sermon was directed towards non believers and those have turned away from the light of god, and in his words “sinners.” And while describing the fiery wrath of the “Angry God,” Edwards states, “The use of this awful subject may be for awakening unconverted persons in this congregation.” By focusing
Jonathan Edwards’ sermon was themed for this congregation to repent so they could make an attempt to save their souls, and it also expresses that you are the sinner. Questioning that now, his entire sermon screams at us that it is us that the sinners, ‘you are sinners,’ but it Edwards doesn’t express that it is we that are sinners so it seems that he was excluding himself. His sermon was also spoken in a quiet, leveled and emotionless voice, monotone even, but even through his sermon lacked any sort of emotion or life, it caused the people of the congregation to feel emotional and angry. It might be the fact it was six-hours of the same sayings of being told ‘you are a sinner,’ or it could be how explicit it was because Edwards did not sugarcoat his sermon in the slightest. "The God that holds you over the pit of Hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect, over the fire abhors you..." is a quote by Edwards that portrays the power of God versus how weak and feeble humans are. Edwards portrays God in a menacing and relentless way so his congregation will fear God and the punishments of the sins they commit, which might be his way to help his
Multiple times throughout the speech Huey P. Long quotes Bible verses that agree with his statements. He summarizes the Book of James by declaring that God ordered “nothing should be held permanently by any one person” (Long). The scripture is used to give more credibility to his claims that the rich should be punished if they do not use their wealth to assist the poor. Every time he quotes the Bible, Long also insists that he is not using the words to amplify his own message, but instead wants his audience to hear words they may rely upon, because he claims that the Bible “will never be disproved so long as you or your children or anyone may live” (Long). The addition of religion behaves as a glittering generality and gives emotional appeal for easily enraptured audience members. Claiming that he is not using God as a crutch for his argument also targets other politicians. He blames them for using glittering generalities and utilizing religion for personal gain by constantly insisting that he is
Whether people stood for or against the Reverend William A. Sunday, they all agreed that it was difficult to be indifferent toward him. The religious leader was so extraordinarily popular, opinionated, and vocal that indifference was the last thing that he would get from people. His most loyal admirers were confident that this rural-breed preacher was God’s mouthpiece, calling Americans to repentance. Sunday’s critics said that at best he was a well-meaning buffoon whose sermons vulgarized and trivialized the Christian message and at worst he was a disgrace to the name of Christ (Dorsett 2).
"This is the Hour of Decision with Billy Graham, coming to you from Minneapolis Minnesota" Billy Graham, has preached to more than 210 million people through a live audience, more than anyone else in history. Not only that, but Mr. Graham has reached millions more through live televison, video and film. This has led Billy to be on the "Ten Most Admired Men in the World" from the Gallup Poll since 1955 a total of thirty-nine times. This includes thirty-two consecutive more than any other individual in the world, placing him as the most popular American for about forty years. This essay is going to talk about Graham's personal life, and what kind of family he grew up in and im also going to talk in detail about how he became an evangelist, because I feel it is very important yet interesting. His accomplishments in the fifties are uncomparable, so I will be including a considerable amount of information concerning that topic. Finally I will be talking about his personal achievements, books written, and how he has been a companion to some of the American Presidents. William Franklin Graham Jr. was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on November 17, 1918. Graham was raised on a dairy farm by William Franklin (deceased 1962) and Morrow Coffey Graham (deceased 1981). In 1943 he married his wife Ruth McCue Bell, and had four children Virginia 1945, Anne Morrow 1948, Ruth Bell 1950, William Franklin, Jr. 1952, and Nelson Edman 1958. At age eighty, he keeps fit by swimming, playing with is nineteen grand children, and from aerobic walking, in the mountains of North Carolina, where he currently lives. (Billy Graham Best Sellers, 1999) Billy Graham told Time Magazine in one article about his life before becoming a preacher. "I lived on a farm. The only difference was I had to get up early in the morning and go milk cows. When I came back from school that day, I had to milk those same cows. There were about twenty cows I had to milk. By hand. That was before they had those machines. I loved being a farmer. But God called me to this work that I'm in now. I knew it was God calling. I said, "Yes. I will follow what God wants me to do." And so I went to two or three schools to get education.
You need to not preach your personal theology but preach the theology of the church
...main a widely respected evangelical preacher for more than 50 years because he avoided misinterpretations of the bible and financial scandals (Hall). What will count most to the lives that Billy Graham effected, will be the day those people die. Graham has led to eternal life that Jesus gave us. Those people will no longer perish but join Graham in Heaven one day.
In the “Letter to Birmingham Jail,” Martin Luther King Jr. alluded to the Bible multiple times throughout the passages. These allusions are sometimes considered the main reasons why this letter was as powerful as people perceive it to be.Martin Luther King Jr. called the clergymen, “...incurable devils,” in his writing. This was undoubtedly one of his most powerful allusions. Not only was he comparing them to the evil in the Bible; moreover, he was calling out the clergymen’s complacency of not acting. By continuously referring to the Bible, he is showing the clergymen their injustice of their actions. Therefore, he is using the words the clergymen preach against them in a intelligent and meaningful way.“Like Paul, I must respond to the call
Instead of believing “their foot shall slide in due time” (Edwards, 209), Franklin and Emerson view individuals as empires full of potential rather than lives managed by God. Franklin seldom goes to public worship, because “their aim seeming to be rather to make us Presbyterians than good citizens.” (Franklin, 580) Yet, he still gives money to some churches because he thinks the churches will use the money to do good, not because
One example is Douglass talking about Mr. Covey. Even though he seems to be one of most devoted Christians its all an act. But in Convoy case he isn’t just a hypocrite, he actually thinks he is a Christian. ‘Douglass refused to pray with a man who believes owning a slave is a righteous thing to do, and this had Convey completely confused” (Wishart). Douglass relates biblical and Christian knowledge to his feeling about the inherent wrong of slavery and could never pray with someone who perpetuates
...e to the audience that the Bible adheres to the deserved emancipation and support of African-Americans, rather than enslavement and oppression. For example, Douglass preaches, “ A worship that can be conducted by persons who refuse to give shelter to the houseless, to give bread to the hungry, clothing to the naked, and who enjoin obedience to a law forbidding these acts of mercy, is a curse, not a blessing to mankind. The Bible addresses all such persons as ‘scribes, Pharisees, hypocrites, who pay tithe of mint, anise, and cumin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy and faith.” By using Matthew 23:23 to assert American Christians as righteously indignant, Douglass infers that if the White American people are truly Christian, they will obey the doctrines of The Bible and negate their duplicity by showing love and mercy to black people.
Although according to the author his co-workers called him compassionate and fierce with an orderly leadership when it came to working with him depending on his situation. One of Graham 's valuable contributions to the world of Christianity became the movement of an unborn evangelism. Nevertheless, as a leader, his relationship style of orientation to people made this process successfully.
Billy Graham went through many different stages in his life, and we will discuss a few of them in this paper. How did Billy Graham confront temptations, and how was he able to continue to love his critics. We will look at how he maintained his moral values as his finances began to increase. Billy also found his niche in life when he experienced the Spirit of God in his formative years as a Christian. We will look at how his mentor helped him to establish earthly leaders to imitate, helped him to open up to the Spirit. As Billy formed his team, he allowed the Holy Spirit to direct him in choosing standards to incorporate in the forming of his team. In his quest to be a good leader for the Lord...

...have presented to the world and for a large extent lived by it. Despite being subjected to persecutions, we as a people, maintained a level of humanity and caring that usually far exceeded the surrounding civilizations. It is the Christians job to go out in to the community and present the gospel. This being said, the moral responsibilities and values set fourth by Christians are a building block for the community and the world. Once these things are established it becomes a giant circle. The people have direct impact upon the community and that community is what bonds the people. Moral responsibility and community are in many ways one in the same, they work together to unite, and activate the citizens of faith so that they can positively impact the political process, influence public policy and define the heritage of Christian values, principals, and morals.
