This semester I attended two common book events, but the one that was most impactful was the Life on the Hyphen- Living Between Two Cultures. This event was a student panel that Dr. Glover hosted and moderated, he asked specific questions then allowed the attendants ask their own questions. This event was very interesting to attend because it was Winthrop students sharing their experiences and how they have adapted to living a life of two cultures. The three students that were on the panel were all females from hispanic descents, but were born in America, or moved here within the past couple years. The questions asked were based on how being an individual “straddling” the line between two cultures has affected their life. However against the odds of poor funding and disbelief from others they were able to come together and succeed. The characters in the novel and the students from the panel all have a common struggle of finding where the fit in “white American culture and...the immigrant community” (14). Both the book and the panel discussed the struggle with wanting to identify with their hispanic culture, but then in American schools they wanted to fit in as well. At school they would oftentimes connect with the American side of them but at home had to change and connect with their hispanic culture. Growing up both groups had to find that balance of when and where they should identify with which culture. The panel stated that they found that in their hispanic culture they were considered too “Americanized” but in American culture they were too hispanic.
