Hyper Sexual addiction is a disorder that can be defined as a person having a habitually elevated sex drive, fantasies, and urges. Nevertheless, compared to other sexual addictions, this could be known as one of the most riskiest and dangerous addiction. Hyper Sexual Addiction has become more prevalent because of the infidelities amongst some celebrities and political figures. Sexual addiction has always existed, but because of technology and social media, people have become more aware of it. People who suffer from this disorder are like drug addicts that crave drugs; they think they can stop, but the urges are constantly there. According to An Elements Behavioral Health article (2016), for the sex addict, sexual activity provides an intense, …show more content…
intoxicating high while lacking an emotional connection, intimacy, or love. Once this high wears off, the urge starts back over again. An addict’s desires are never fulfilled, they crave and want more. The most common signs are excessive masturbation, pornography, or other websites are viewed frequently, having extra marital affairs without using any form of protection, and having one night stands with prostitutes or people who they don’t even know. People who suffer from any form of sexual addiction have a new stream of material they can rely on such as things they may see in the media, such as pictures, movies, lyrics, e-mails, chats, web cams and teledildonic. (Pizzol, et al, pg. 169)”. Some studies have suggested that men masturbate more than women. Some women may find that it is easier to go without sex, but as far as men, they may go insane. An article in Psychology Today suggested that pornography revenue is now greater than the combined revenues of all professional football, baseball, and basketball franchises and is almost twice the combined revenues of network stations such as ABC, CBS, and NBC (D’Orlando, pg.55). Sexual addiction is at an all-time high that needs to be evaluated. It is not shocking that the revenue of porn is a profitable industry. It seems as if commercials, adult cartoons, movies, magazines, and novels have some form of sexual related content. As the old saying goes, sex does sell and it does even if it costs them their families, jobs, and personal value The riskiest and dangerous addiction are more prevalent amongst some celebrities and political figures.
For example, Charlie Sheen admitted and spoke about his reputation as a womanizer and the love for prostitutes. Even though he has not admitted to being a sex addict, he has admitted to paying for the services of prostitutes. He has had failed marriages and his current relationship has ended because of infidelity issues. His actions have caused him to acquire HIV. Magic Johnson was also considered a sex addict and because of his actions, he too developed HIV. Instead of his marriage ending, his wife made the decision to work through their issues and stay together. Tiger Woods, Kayne West, and the list can go on naming people with the diagnosis of Hyper Sexual Addiction. Some individuals do not think of themselves as sex addicts. Some may say they love having sex. However, what is the reasoning behind the urges and the desires for sex? It may be fun to some, but for others, they do suffer from some kind of psychological issue, such as a chemical imbalance. If it were not for some celebrities and actor’s infidelity situation made public, some would continue with their lifestyles. It is very hard for someone to admit they have a problem, but in order for sex addicts to do this, they must come to terms with the fact that they do suffer from this …show more content…
disorder. Sexual experience is not about affection, but about seeking pleasure. Sexual addicts avoid feelings of stress from the outside, problems at work, and personal issues. Research also has found that sex addicts often come from dysfunctional families and are more likely than non-sex addicts to have been abused. One study found that 82% of sex addicts reported being sexually abused as children (Herkov, 2016). Sex addicts often describe their parents as rigid, distant and uncaring. These families, including the addicts themselves, are more likely to be substance abusers. One study found that 80 percent of recovering sex addicts report some type of addiction in their families of origin. As a result, sex addicts do have a hard time being committed to one relationship. Instead of getting help for their sexual desires, they rather deny the fact that they have a problem. Some sexual addicts often have unprotected sex and can pass along sexual transmitted diseases to their mates, as well as HIV and AIDS. Their hunger for sex can be so strong that the possibility of contacting a disease or not is not a priority. According to Prodigals International (2014), the Impact on the Marriage is as follows: • 47% of families said pornography is a problem in their home; • 42% of surveyed adults indicated that their partner's use of pornography made them feel insecure; • 41% of surveyed adults admitted they felt less attractive due to their partner's pornography use; and • 30% of surveyed adults said their partner's use of pornography made them feel more like a sexual object. It also notes the Impact on the Job as follows: Impact on the Job • 20% of men and 13% of women admitted to accessing pornography at work. Pornography has reached very high levels in disrupting the lives of society. So much so that it has surpassed the viewing of professional sports. • Statistics reveal that 40 million people regularly visit internet porn web sites daily, while 47% of Christians said pornography is a major problem in the home; 10% of adults admit to internet sexual addiction – 65% are male, while 35% are female. The levels of pornography have reached such high levels, that the Porn revenue is larger than all combined revenues of all professional football, baseball and basketball franchises, and exceeds the combined revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC at $6.2 billion. (LifeSiteNews.com, 2016). Hyper Sexual Addiction is a disorder that some may view this term as a way to infidelity.
Some researchers believe sex addiction is not a disorder, but something that is excessively used. The internet has made everything so easy to access. Sex addiction is not even included in the category DSM-5. Based on the DSM-5 list of various disorders, the clinicians then decide whether an individual shows the characteristics of someone who has a psychological disorder. Maybe in the future, sexual addiction would have a chance to make it into a sub category of the DSM-5 instead of labeled in a single category alone. Sex addiction seems to become a problem when it is harming the family unit or the image of someone famous when it becomes headline news. We really do not know how many people suffer from this disorder. There has not been sufficient research about this, a situation which makes this topic very delicate. To some, the word addiction alone is without meaning. Most individuals that do suffer from this disorder do suffer from a chemical imbalance as well. A twelve-step program, self-help support groups, and individual counseling can be recommended for treatment. In recovery they will have to learn how to come to terms with their addiction and how to think differently if placed in certain scenarios. For example, they must live a life that does not put them in situations that may cause one to relapse. It is important to surround themselves around individuals that have
been through the same situation as them. Due to the lack of qualified counselors, many addicted individuals turn to self-help groups, all of which are administered by nonprofessional without formal education and training in sexual addiction (Hagedorn, Juhnke, pg.66.). In the future, it may be possible that hypersexual disorder will be classified under one of the category of the DSM-5. When a person who suffers from a drug and alcoholic problem looks into a mirror and does not see himself or herself as this, this behavior is the same as a sex addict. They often deny the fact that they actually do suffer from this. People who suffer with any type of disorder use their addiction as some form of coping mechanism. In the future, researchers, psychologist, and psychiatrist need to find a way to properly diagnosis this disorder, but for now there is not enough research to say that this addiction has anything to do with a psychiatric disorder. As stated in the statistics above, some addicts have suffered from sexual abuse as a child or have been associated with someone in their family. Until more individuals come forth and admit to having this disorder, then the proper tools and techniques may not be classified as one of the DSM-5 disorders. Based on data collected from the past describing a class of sexual behavior disorders as “compulsive” has some historical and clinical usefulness but this title is not consistent with DSM-derived terminology in order to identify a new diagnostic category for a sexual disorder (Kafka, pg.391). Again, this is an ongoing problem and hopefully this topic will be given more incite than it has received. Men and women suffer from this addiction every day. Until this addiction is given the proper attention that is needed, I am afraid the statistics will increase from individuals with hypersexual addiction. Then there will be a greater problem with sexual transmitted disease, HIV, and AIDS on the rise. This is more serious than one would want to believe. In the future, more studies have to be conducted in order to bring more awareness to this disorder.
There are many different definitions in which people provide regarding addiction. May (1988) describes that addiction “is a state of compulsion, obsession, or preoccupation that enslaves a person’s will and desire” (p. 14). Individuals who suffer from addiction provide their time and energy toward other things that are not healthy and safe. The book
If working with a client like Walter I would likely also have them keep a journal. I’m not sure yet if I would ask that they bring the journal back to session, or if I just ask them to describe any insights that may have come from their journaling. We would likely discuss any thinking distortions and work to replace them with healthier thinking patterns. We would also utilize relapse–prevention training where we would work to identify high-risk situations and learn alternative ways of coping with them. When working with clients with this disorder I would like to pay special attention to whether the techniques are helpful or whether we need to look at other methods of treatment such as aversion therapy, masturbatory satiation, orgasmic reorientation, or antiandrogen drugs.
on how to help those who suffer from sexual addiction and to prevent it from occurring.
While alleged sex addictions have existed for many years, they have only recently been accepted as valid excuses for sexual deviancy. Attitudes toward sex addiction in the past offer a stark contrast to how it is viewed today, as the constantly medicalizing society insists on putting everything under the technical microscope. Sex addiction is commonly associated with a person’s inability to control his sexual behavior, implying an abnormally high sex drive and obsession with sex which have negative effects on his personal life (MedicineNet 2007, 1). Rather than breaking down the science behind the disorder, a customary practice in today’s medicalized society, older attitudes towards sex addiction placed it under the same light as alcoholism, where a lack of control and unwillin...
There are many psychological conditions that can affect the way a person acts, feels and goes on about their daily life. There is one in particular that caught my attention and it is the "Addictive Personality Disorder" or APD. According to Daniel H. Angres, MD "addictive personality disorder is a condition in which an individual is susceptible to addiction", which can range anywhere from drug abuse to pornography to even gambling. People are considered to be at risk of having this common but serious condition when one shows aggression, depression and lack of self control. People with this disorder can go from one addiction to the next or even hold multiple addictions at a time.
Studies about men and women, boys, and girls who have been involved in prostitution and/or pornography have revealed a lot. They are the hardest patients to treat. They say they want help, but nothing thatþs done to help them out works. They run back. They just donþt seem to want to change. Women who have been subjected to continuous abuse and victimization over which they have no control or understanding have developed a sense of psychological paralysis that prohibits their ability to do anything positive about further victimization. They believe they are unable to change their destructive behavior. They become entrapped in helplessness and hopelessness. They feel themselves to be out of control of their lives. Essentially, they have developed a chronic disorder as a result of their victimization and an inability to separate themselves from the sexual exploitation in order to make a better life for themselves.
In working with those with addiction, the medical model involves many different avenues of the disease. The essential
Main Point: What defines an addiction? According to Psychology Today, “Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance…. or engages in an activity….that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health.” This can range anywhere from drug use to eating disorders, to gambling, to even texting in today’s generation. Shocking to say the least, especially when most people do not even know they are addicted or are an addict until they realize this definition.
These individuals devote themselves completely to certain substance that allows them to forget about their reality and leads them into a world of ecstasy, one which they are unable to reach without it. Continuously, their addiction takes over their lives and turns them into "slaves" of the substance causing their lives to fall apart and eventually leads to being homeless, in jail, or dead. However, there are other forms of addiction whether is a mild addiction and not as severe as drugs or alcohol but it still falls under its definition. Some examples of addictions that we do not notice are pornography, internet, television, eating, entertainment, and money. Most of these examples have their own negative aspects. Also, others might have a dependency on unhealthy eating habits which eventually leads to their bodies suffering from a broad range of medical conditions. Others also tend to create a dependency on shopping and spending money on unnecessary materials. Lastly, some individuals also have bad habits that involve constant lying and deceiving. All of these examples are just a few of the things that fall under the umbrella of what an addiction truly is and each has a negative connotation to it. Yes, some might disagree with certain examples given but truth is we each have our own addictions we just try to hide them and point out the addictions of others instead of helping

Many look at sexual morality as an unimportant virtue. “Modern people are always saying Sex is nothing to be ashamed of.”(Lewis 98) Lust is the main purpose of the disobeying of this moral outlook. It is a desire everyone is born with and is very difficult to ignore, especially in the adolescent years. “Perversions of the sex instinct are numerous, hard to cure, and frightful.”(Lewis 97) This gives many the thought of is it is a natural instinct its O.K. All temptations should not be given into, such as this one. Lust is the key; it is much easier to give in to Lust than to turn away from it. Life gives us many temptations and it is our job to be strong and determine to prevail over temptation.
Sexual addictions of any kind can continue to progress in stages that may include child pornography, violence and pain, prostitution, rape and even serial killing. The overexposure of sexual imagery is creating a tolerance not only to the images presented but also to the crimes that go along the continuous craving for more and more extreme pornographic material to satisfy a sexual need. The key here is that people are after more and more sex, not a sexual relationship. The relationship part is gone and sadly, people just want to live the moment, satisfy a sexual need and walk away without any regard to the damage they might cause.
Addiction has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, from my earliest memories of my father, until now as I am a licensed professional in the field of addiction as well as a person in long term recovery myself.
Also, these celebrities suffering from drug addiction and overdose should be a lesson to not just celebrities of today, but also to fans and people alike. Everybody has their own favorite celebrity, what people do not know is that these celebrities also have their own personal problems and that they are not perfect as what we, fans, think they are. The fact is that no one is perfect, not even your favorite celebrity, so not every thing a celebrity does is ideal and ethical to imitate. The question here is: what are some aspects that sway Hollywood celebrities to drug addiction? I employ these as general research questions and claims to guide the discussion about the reasons behind Hollywood Celebrities’ dependency on
The ranges of sexually addictive behaviors are various. Sexual addictive behaviors include, but are not limited to compulsive masturbation, multiple affairs, unsafe sex, sexual anorexia, multiple or anonymous partners, pornography viewing, phone or cybersex, voyeurism, and exhibitionism (National, Sex). Despite the differences in the acting out behaviors, sexual addictions all have the same common denominator in their origins and aspects in relation to their developments. Thus, the underlying causes are the same.
