Picture someone you know who you may call a survivor. Maybe you think of a war veteran, or even someone who has survived a serious disease. No matter who you thought of, most of these survivors will have three key traits in common: cleverness, determination, and preparedness. A survivor is a person who has lived through many hardships. For example, going through a certain problem (like being diagnosed with cancer and going through treatment) and being able to stay alive after the event to tell his or her story. To be a survivor, you must be clever like Rainsford, determined like Hyonseo Lee, and proactive like Aron Ralston.
In particular, Rainsford from "The Most Dangerous Game" became a survivor because his cleverness helped him pull through his

For instance, in "My Escape from North Korea" at 7:28, "since [her] family couldn't speak Chinese, she had to guide them...2,000 miles in China, and then to Southeast Asia." Lee had to have the drive to travel that far with her family. Especially since Lee was the only one who could speak fluent Chinese, the rest of her family could have easily been caught. If Lee didn’t have the determination to guide her family a long way across China and the Koreas, she could be trapped in a jail to this day. Hyonseo also shows this trait when she says, "Because many...stay in contact with family members still inside...we send information and money that is helping change North Korea...("My Escape from North Korea," 10:44) .”Her experience inspired her to help others in similar situations. Lee continues to risk her life and her freedom by giving information to help other people to survive through the same problem. She shows to everyone that she wants to help others, like her family and her friends, when times are rough. Lee shows that determination can help survivors move forward through their
After falling off his ship and forced to swim to a mysterious island, Rainsford is faced with a challenge. General Zaroff traps him in a “game” that requires Rainsford to use his skills to survive. He is hunted for three days; where he was chased, tracked down, and shot at. General Zaroff led the hunt to try to kill Rainsford. General was equipped with more firepower and help from his henchman and dogs. But even with his much greater opponent, he was able to survive. Rainsford used his many skills to defeat and kill his enemy. He used quick wit to make traps that would slow Zaroff and kill his dogs and henchman. Then he used his intelligence to escape Zaroff by swimming away, but sneaking back into his own mansion.
As we read “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, we are introduced to Rainsford. The true survivor expresses several characteristics that help him to defeat General Zaroff and win the game. Connell not only shows us that by being confident, quick thinking and adaptive, Rainsford is able to survive against the most inhumane people like General Zaroff, but he concludes that these characteristics of a true survivor can help us to survive conflicts of our own society as well.
Would you have been brave enough to play a “game” that was to most likely end in death? In the story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, a man by the name of Rainsford is clearly brave because of the fact that he played the most dangerous game. His bravery can be proved by his actions, appearance, and speech.
Lee grew up in China, a country that had been ravaged by Japan, because of this this has resulted in a deep hatred for Japan that followed Henrys father all the way to his death. When reading in the paper that Japanese school teachers were being put in jail for reasons that weren’t clear, Henry's father felt relief and victory (67). Unfortunately Henry’s father wasn’t the only one with a negative impression of japan; many Americans regarded all Japanese Americans as enemies and possible spy’s, this created a torrent of hate and discrimination towards the Japanese. In reality, most, if not all, of these Japanese Americans were not spies and many didn’t care to be associated with
From all of these, she learns to look at the individuality of the others. For Scouts, courage is most often something with physical activity and involves personal danger. It is very difficult for Scouts to see that greater courage is often required in other places of life. Scout learns that the greatest courage can be found in a situation where a person knows that he is going to lose and still continues to fight. To prove this, Miss Lee first had Scout observe her father perform a physical act of courage when he shoots the charging mad dog.
A survivor is someone who remains alive while others have died during a time of disaster. The most vital attributes a survivor must uphold are humility and independence. A survivor should be able to uphold the trait of humility in a time of crisis. In the article, “Miraculous Survivors: Why they live while others die” about many people who exemplify attributes of a survivor, J. Blake states, “They survive because they are humble… They know when to rest, when they shouldn’t try something beyond their capabilities”( Blake, 19).
...Also an important quote is when she says, "But today I realize I've never really known what it means to be Chinese. I am thirty-six years old" (857). Even though she was in her 30's and still had that identity crisis, it was uplifting knowing that all it took for her to resolve that conflict was one meeting with her sisters.
An example of survival can be found in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The town’s people were scared of this unknown creature and were afraid for their lives. In an act of survival, they hunted the beast down in a full town riot. Lucy, John, and Van Helsing hold a significant part in the novel as far as surviving goes. Even though they shared more than others, their survival skills left a significant impact on the
For example, Rainsford decides to jump into the sea and go into the General’s home (34). He is nimble. His mind can expand on ideas immediately. Such as, figuring out a way to beat the creator at its game. In addition, when he is running from the General, he remembers a native trick and utilizes it (33-34). He reiterates ideas he’s been taught, and puts them into play. He’s trying to impede the General before the General can catch him. Furthermore, he tries to make the General obscure about his position (22). He’s trying to be in the mindset of hunters. He’s underestimating the General, but he soon finds out that it’s going to be vice versa. Rainsford subdues problems he is faced
As seen from their actions in each story, Rainsford and Will Kane are both logical thinkers. When Rainsford is sent into the island to be hunted, he knows to keep calm and begin to think about where to hide from Zaroff. "I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve" (Cornell 212). In The Most Dangerous Game, General Zaroff is a great at following tracks, and he also uses dogs to find the people
In the Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford’s hunting skills helps shape the plot but most importantly the resolution of the story. The General gets induced and a bit overconfident because of Rainsford’s hunting skills when he says, “‘You’ve done well Rainsford,’
Being gallant is the first characteristic of being a survivor. For an example of gallant is on page 73. It says “I wish to leave this island at once….” “we will hunt- you and I.”. My explanation for my quoted evidence is that it shows how brave he is. He takes general zaroff challenge, even though he is taking a risk of his own life. The reason being is he cannot leave the island because General Zaroff thinks he will tell the secret of the way he hunts. So if he wants to leave, Rainsford and general Zaroff must go against each other. A second point to this is when Rainsford says, “ And if I win-” “began Rainsford huskily. This in fact, shows that Rainsford is brave because he sounds ready to take the challenge and beat him at his own game.
The protagonist, Rainsford, in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, by Richard Connell is characterized to make an effective protagonist. The characteristics that make Rainsford an effective protagonist are how he is brave, intelligent, and a resourceful character. Rainsford is a brave character as he never lets his panic consume him and he learns to calm himself. Rainsford ponders, ‘“I will not lose my nerve. I will not.” He slid down from the tree, and struck off again into the woods. His face was set and he forced the machinery of his mind to function”’. When Rainsford is on the first day of the hunt he calms himself down and sets his mind on the task at hand, demonstrating his bravery to not give up, a benefit to being an effective
Challenges are a big part of life and it trains people to persevere through difficult situations and circumstances. When faced with a difficult challenge, characters in literature often find a way of overcoming it in one way or another. In Richard Connell's “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford is forced to fight for his life when General Zaroff challenges him to a dual on his island. To survive and win, Rainsford must think of creative ways to attack Zaroff from a distance. In short, Rainsford is only equipped with a hunting knife and a small supply of food. He has three days to evade Zaroff, who has a small pistol and band of hunting dogs. This challenge Rainsford faces can very easily lead to a certain death but protagonists are typically
