Hydrogen Fuel cell technology
Hydrogen fuel cell is a device which converts chemical energy into electrical energy. The cell uses hydrogen and oxygen as the chemicals (Rose, 2013). This cell is like a battery and releases energy in one way from going negative to positive (government of Canada, 2013). The fuel cell is separated by an electrolyte, which causes the electrons to travel around in a circuit creating energy (government of Canada, 2013).The hydrogen travels across this electrolyte combining with the oxygen to release water (Innovate Us, 2013). Overall reaction can be described as below.
Hydrogen + Oxygen = Electricity + Water Vapor
Cathode: 2H2 → 4H+ + 4e-
Anode: O2 + 4H+ + 4e- → 2H2O
Hydrogen fuel cell was first made by Sir William Grove, in 1839 (Innovate Us, 2013). He produced a gas voltaic battery which led to believe that energy could be produced by a cell (Innovate Us, 2013). However, a real working battery was not produced until 1959 (Matthey, 2014). Hydrogen fuel cells are used in many products and can power anything that requires electricity. It is recently mostly used in transportation such as hydrogen fuel cell cars and buses (Alternative Energy, 2014). It could be used in power plants, mobiles, buildings; heat and power. In the past it has been used for spaceships (government of Canada, 2013). It is currently being used as a backup power of renewable energy such as wind and solar. When there is not enough wind or sun to produce electricity, hydrogen fuel cells are used (Alternative Energy, 2014). They can also be used in portable devices such as laptops, computers and replace most batteries.

One type of engine is a called a fuel cell. A fuel cell operates like a battery. Unlike a battery, a fuel cell does not run down or require recharging. It will produce energy in the form of electricity and heat as long as fuel is supplied. A fuel cell consists of two electrodes sandwiched around and electrolyte. Oxygen passes over one electrode and hydrogen over the other, generating electricity, water and heat. Hydrogen fuel is used to make all this work. Fuel cell emissions are nothing but water vapor.
Hydrogen lies in one of the copious replacements for gasoline. It is not an energy source such as oil, but an energy carrier that is produced instead of digging and finding it underground. Though replacing fossil fuels by hydrogen fuel cell is very hard and costs a great deal, for the most part, hydrogen fuel cell is a zero carbon emission fuel which highly reduces the carbon emissions that causes pandemic global warming. Hydrogen is very helpful for nature by cause of replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen fuel cells might end global warming once and for all.

In the article “History of Fuel Cells” the author says, “Charles Langer and Ludwig Mond, coined the term ‘fuel cell’ as they were trying to engineer the first practical fuel cell using air and coal gas.” After Langer and Mond’s discovery Frances Bacon developed what was close to being the first fuel cell in 1959. In the article “History of Fuel Cells” the author declares, “It was not until 1959 that Bacon and company first demonstrated a practical five-kilowatt fuel cell system.” In the late 1950’s NASA began experimenting with fuel cells by using them for compact electricity generators. Fuel cells have now supplied electricity for many space missions. In the article “History of Fuel Cells” the author states, “In more recent decades, a number of manufacturers - including major auto makers - and various federal agencies have supported ongoing research into the development of fuel cell technology for use in fuel cell vehicles (FCV) and other applications. Fuel cell energy is now expected to replace traditional power sources in coming years - from micro fuel cells to be used in cell phones to high-powered fuel cells for stock car racing.”
A battery is a device which converts chemical energy into electrical energy. A battery usually consists of two or more cells connected in series or parallel, you can also have a single cell battery. All cells consist of a positive electrode, and a negative electrode. An electrolyte is a liquid substance capable of conducting electricity. In this substance one of the electrodes will react producing electrons, while the other will except electrons. When the electrodes are connected to a device to be powered, called a load, an electrical current flows.

Recent years have shown an increasingly large need for a practical renewable energy source for such reasons as diminishing fossil fuels and increases in greenhouse gasses. The Earth captures around 342 W/m2 of energy from the sun. This energy is in the form of solar radiation, which the atmosphere reflects about 77 W/m2 and will absorb around 68 W/m2 of solar radiation annually. Therefore, the Earth’s surface is receiving, on average, about 197 W/m2 of solar radiation annually. This amount of energy received is roughly more than 10,000 times the amount of all energy humans consume per year. This energy can be used to produce electricity or heat. This energy source is not being used to it’s potential considering how much effort would come into effect to store and transport this energy.
