Hurricane Katrina occurred on August 29, 2005. Hurricane Katrina was one of the worst natural disasters recorded in the United States. Katrina hit the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and New Orleans. No one was prepared for the devastations caused by Hurricane Katrina. Most of the damages was caused after the levees breeched. After the levees breeched the water started to rise over the roof tops of the homes and buildings in New Orleans, Gulf Coast, and surrounding areas. Thousands of lives were lost, and millions lost their proprieties. Many people did not have flood insurance and had to depend on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and charitable groups such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army for financial assistance.
I remember my family and friends preparing to leave their homes or to shelter in place, after being informed hurricane that Katrina was headed towards New Orleans. Most of them decided to leave and brave the traffic and the long hours of driving. Those who decided to stay and to shelter in place would later state that they would not do it again. If you can imagine having no air condition in New Orleans during the summer, it is not comfortable. Although I had no lost of property or physical harm, serval of my family and friends lost their homes and precious photograph memories. However, I shared in their frustrations about their loss and the long road to recovery. After seeing and hearing the impact that Katrina had on those affected, I have a lot of empathy and compassion for those affected. As a healthcare provider and working in one of the few full functioning hospitals in the suburb of New Orleans, patients would share their horrific experiences during and after Katrina. I often think about what those patients experience and am
