Humorous Wedding Speech - Written Guidelines from the Bride
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen - I must inform you that I’ve had quite a heavy night and I’m still feeling a little fragile. So please spare a thought and try not to clap too loudly during my speech because I’ve got a dreadful hangover and a splitting headache. You’d think I’d know better than to be out drinking in the early hours of the morning the night before a big wedding - but David’s a good friend (mate) and he needed some company.
Now, I'm sure a number of the guys here today have been a best man at a wedding before, but I wonder how many of you have ever received written guidelines from the bride to be? Before I go any further, I'd like to explain that two weeks ago I received this email from Phylis:
I was very pleased when David asked you to be best man at our wedding. I knew that by selecting you, he ha...
The story of Beowulf is one of the oldest examples of what society views as a hero. Though the story was written in Anglo-Saxon times, the credentials one would need in order to be considered by society a hero remain the same. The Anglo-Saxons believed that a hero was strong and courageous, but humble and kind as well. They also believed that a hero was intelligent and dignified, in which he would fight until death in order to defend his people. In Beowulf and Grendel, directed by Sturla Gunnarsson, Beowulf is depicted as caring, compassionate, noble, and understanding, which makes him seem as if he had every trait of a true hero. He seems quite the opposite, however, in the story Grendel by John Gardner. The book Grendel portrays Beowulf as sinister and ruthless, which makes him seem less of a hero. What society values in a hero today is portrayed more in the movie than the book, which suggests that one is considered a true hero only if he or she has certain heroic traits accepted by society.
Common among classic literature, the theme of mortality engages readers on a quest of coping with one of the certainties of life. Katherine Anne Porter masterfully embraces the theme of mortality both directly and indirectly in her story, “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall.” Understanding that all mankind ultimately becomes subject to death unleashes feelings of dread and anxiety in most people; however, Granny Weatherall transitions from rushing to meet her demise in her sixties to completely denying she is on her deathbed when she is eighty. Readers have seen this theme of mortality reverberated over and over in literature, but what makes this story stand the test of time is the author’s complexity. In Katherine Anne Porter’s
When the groom asked me to be his best man, I consulted the Internet for help. I discovered that the job is essentially comprised of four main tasks:
In "An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad's Heart of Darkness," Chinua Achebe criticizes Joseph Conrad for his racist stereotypes towards the continent and people of Africa. He claims that Conrad propagated the "dominant image of Africa in the Western imagination" rather than portraying the continent in its true form (1793). Africans were portrayed in Conrad's novel as savages with no language other than grunts and with no "other occupations besides merging into the evil forest or materializing out of it simply to plague Marlow" (1792-3). To Conrad, the Africans were not characters in his story, but merely props. Chinua Achebe responded with a novel, Things Fall Apart: an antithesis to Heart of Darkness and similar works by other European writers. In Things Fall Apart, Achebe tells the story of an Ibo man, Okonkwo, and the tragedies which he has to endure. Africans are represented as individuals capable of speech, not just one massive conglomerate of natives. Their customs are not regarded as eccentric or bizarre, but as the norm-functioning no differently than the variety of Western customs do. And the land itself is described as a mix of towns and farms, not a mysterious land which breeds insanity. In almost every respect, Things Fall Apart contradicts the stereotypes set up in Heart of Darkness.
I must admit, I am more nervous about being best man than I was at my own wedding. Maybe it’s because I have been married a year and I know what Jonathan’s letting himself in for!
and may they grow mature in taste and healthy in color and as sought after as the contents of the glass. " Irish toast May your wedding days be few and your anniversaries many. May your voyage through life be as happy and as free As the dancing waves on the deep blue sea Here's to the groom with bride so fair, And here's to the bride with groom so rare!
It is customary for the best man to retell an embarrassing tale or two from the bridegroom’s past. As Gary’s oldest friend, this part of the speech fell to me. However, I had two problems with this. Firstly, Gary originally insisted on vetting the speech, which would have meant me going to the trouble of preparing two speeches. Luckily, he relented. Secondly, Gary is the original Mr. Nice Guy and it's very difficult to think of anything bad to say about him. So, back to you Steve!
As is customary I should leave the groom with wise words, to help in your marriage. Since I am a bachelor, I have little experience to speak from, but I hope these help anyway:
Literature offers insight on different interpretations of how death can be perceived depending on the environment one is raised in. Perceptions of death depend on where and when you grow up, and your social standing in society. This is conveyed in literature by not only by the time period of the piece of literature, but from the point of view of the reader. Literature reveals different types of scenarios in which death is perceived differently, including questions of racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination.
Conrad, Joseph. Heart of Darkness 3rd Ed. Ed. Robert Kimbrough. New York: Norton Critical, 1988.
A hero is a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities. The real heroes are Superman, firefighters, soldiers, doctors, and Caitlyn Jenner, with a great impact. A hero is one who,is courageous, noble, and selfless. However, Beowulf’s deeds and achievements are stained with greed, cowardness, dishonor, and the blood of the innocent. He brags of his past achievements, he boasts constantly about how strong and powerful he is. These characteristics
Heroes do have supernatural exemplary traits and characteristics. In the movie, Beowulf undeniably possesses super strength and extra-ordinary bravery as well. The themes "Good vs Evil", "Christianity vs Paganism", "Fate", "Fame", "Friendship", "Loyalty and Honor", "Bravery", "Generosity", "Man's price", "Thane's duty to his Lord" and "Lord's duty to his thanes" were obviously observed in the movie. Anyway, I saw another thing which I thought was given emphasis in the story. This realization goes this way: Beowulf, as a hero is still a human being. In connection, as a human nature, he too (like any other human being) has his own strengths and weaknesses. He did commit a mistake by having an intercourse with Grendel's mom. But it doesn't stop there. He did hid that as a secret
When I look at the bride and groom, I feel such a kaleidoscope of emotions. I know that Kari has found her true match and I know that theirs will be a marriage of long standing. My heart is bursting with love for you two today. I know you have a wonderful adventure ahead of you, and with God?s blessing your marriage will last for decades to come.
Halfway through the vows and the crying, I began to think. Why have I been holding this grudge for so long? Clearly no one cares and probably doesn’t even remember. I deserve to happy too. I needed closure and there, I just gave myself some. Easy. The ceremony came to an end and we all headed to the reception. However, since I am the maid of honor I must give a speech. I wrote one, but that's when I wasn’t at peace. It could be filled with hatred and anger. Slowly, I carefully took it out of my purse to throw it away, but suddenly my sister slipped by.
Ladies and gentlemen, thanks Gary for those kind words. It has been a pleasure for all us attendants to play a small part in your big day. Before I say a word or two about the groom, what about that dress Jeanie is wearing? It has attracted so much favorable comment from the guests here that I have to give it a special mention. You look stunning Jeanie!
