The Northern Renaissance occurred during the late 15th century, while the Italian Renaissance lasted from 14th. Both of them were influential to their times, the latter marking the end of the medieval period in Europe and the prior signaling the beginning of religious change around the world. The Northern Renaissance was very different than the Italian Renaissance, the extent of which was proven by their differences in location, use of humanism, and ideas.
As the name suggests, the Italian Renaissance started in Florence Italy and remained there for the majority of it’s timespan. The Northern Renaissance on the hand started in the northern region of Europe, much as the name suggests. It spread quickly over the continent, partly due to the aid of the invention of the printing press in 1440s by Johannes Gutenberg. Humanism is the way of thinking that turned away from medieval scholasticism and revived the use of ancient Greek and Roman ways of reasoning. Humanism itself can be divided into several different categories, including secular humanism, naturalism, and religious humanism. The Italian Renaissance embraced the classic form of Renaissance humanism, going back to the old ways of reasoning from their ancient Greek and Roman ancestors. The influences of this form had little effect on places outside of Italy, contributing to the reason why it was kept mainly to that region. They were less religious in their intentions, following more on solving the great questions of the day rather than the question of god and the true deity. The Northern was the exact opposite, turning to religious humanism and figuring out what to do about the rising Protestant Reformation.
