Human Nature
Wanting to find a challenge and wanting to survive is human nature. The story “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell is not just a story about hunting. The story, “The Most Dangerous Game” is making a statement about human nature. Challenge, survival, and evil qualities of humans are shown in the novel. Evil has many definitions but, the one that is focused on in the story is having or exhibiting bad moral qualities or morally corrupt and wickedness. For example, trying to survive and keep living is part of human nature just like trying to find a challenge to satisfy one’s self and the evil qualities of humans.
It is human nature to look for a new challenge. For example, General Zaroff, an individual who comes from a life of wealth, luxury, and militarism, which inflate his ego and sense of entitlement and impose few limits on his desires. He lost interest in hunting animals when he had conquered the most difficult ones. They did not thrill or challenge him anymore. He said, “Hunting tigers ceased to interest me some years ago. I exhausted their possibilities you see. No thrill left in tigers, no real danger. I live for danger.” To end his boredom with hunting animals, which had no chance against him, General Zaroff had to invent a new animal that would be able to challenge him. He wanted something with courage, cunning, and reason. He bought an island for the purpose of hunting his new animal. This new animal was humans. This shows the general was looking for a challenge. If the general was not looking for a challenge, he would not have gone to the trouble of buying an island and capturing humans to hunt.
It is also human nature to survive. When Rainsford, a big-game hunter who fought on the front line...

... the writer of the statement believes that evil exists because of experience and how they are nurtured. What the writer of the statement is basically trying to say is that if it wasn’t for moral codes, experiencing unpleasant things then evil wouldn’t exist in this world.
In this book the author of “The Most Dangerous Game” is trying to shows a man’s desire to be challenged and man’s desire to survive. It also shows that some human beings are evil and some are evil in an extreme way that they would kill part of their own race just for their own pleasure. People should look for a challenge but should not go too far. Also, if you want to keep living then keep living but when there is no choice and you can’t survive anymore then you have to accept your fate. However, if all people truly had evil in them, then they should get rid of it because it might ruin their lives.
The most dangerous game began as a sport for one man. His name is Sanger Rainsford. In Richard Connell’s story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford, an avid hunter, is lost at sea, stranded on “Ship-Trap” Island-every sailor’s worst nightmare. Rainsford goes through a series of events that prove to be life-altering. Even though Sanger Rainsford went through many trials and tribulations, he never lost his intelligence, composure, or his bravery.
One conflict seen in Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption is the conflict between man and nature, which Louie, Phil, and Mac faced while lost at sea. As the men spent countless days at sea their points of view about the situation “were becoming self- fulfilling” (Hillenbrand 155). The
Predators and their prey are often thought of as opposites, however, they are more similar than most people think. Most animals are part of at least one food chain where they are both a predator and prey. This idea is further elaborated in the short story The Most Dangerous Game. Rainsford, a famous big-game hunter, finds himself trapped on an island where he learns that innocent people are being hunted for entertainment. He soon finds himself being hunted by General Zaroff, the owner of the island, because he refuses to “murder” humans. Becoming Zaroff’sthe General’s prey changes Rainsford's perspective that the animals he hunts have no understanding of fear. In The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell suggests that the hunter is not
In the story The Most Dangerous Game a character named General Zaroff has a passion for hunting. He has been hunting since he was born. He has hunted every animal known to man, but, then he gets tried of hunting the same animal over and over. So he discovers a new animal human flesh. General Zaroff is person of bad character because he is cruel, cowardly, and untrustworthy.
Facing hardships, problems, or obstacles shouldn’t discourage one from completing their task or job. Many of authors usually put their characters through tough complications to show the reader that no matter what happens; anyone could pull through. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connel, the main character Mr. Rainsford gets stranded on an eerie island with a bad reputation. He meets General Zaroff and gets thrown into a huge hunting game, where his life is on the line. In the end, he wins the game and will continue to hunt animals, but not people, as the general once did. He will continue to hunt because one, hunting means everything to him. Two, he will not continue the general’s crazy ways, and resort back to the legal and non-dangerous to other humans sport. Third, he feels powerful when he becomes the hunter and not the hunted. Giving up hunting would be like giving up his life, so just because of a minor block he had to overcome, he will not give up hunting.
The setting of “The Most Dangerous Game” is an indubitable feature that lets the reader get an idea of where this is all taking place and gives the feeling as to what the story should feel like.
It is the contention of this paper that humans are born neutral, and if we are raised to be good, we will mature into good human beings. Once the element of evil is introduced into our minds, through socialization and the media, we then have the potential to do bad things. As a person grows up, they are ideally taught to be good and to do good things, but it is possible that the concept of evil can be presented to us. When this happens, we subconsciously choose whether or not to accept this evil. This is where the theories of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke become interesting as both men differed in the way they believed human nature to be.
Even though evil is very real it has no existence of its own. Evil is an absence of something, it is not a “thing” itself. Evil is a lot like cold which is the absence of heat. So evil can be nothing without something.
Also known as “The Hounds of Zaroff”, “The Most Dangerous Game” is the ultimate showdown between instinct and reason. In this thrilling exploration into the minds of two equally deadly adversaries, Rainsford, our American-born protagonist, fights to save his life in the midst of
Being able to overcome anything in life is a great feeling. There is a special feeling in the body and the mind when the body achieves a goal, and the mind gets a feeling of satisfaction. Since, the mind chooses to go against the body's will to quit, you have to be mentally strong. In Richard Connell's short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” large game hunter Sanger Rainsford is tested in the following ways: strong versus the weak, the value of life, and becoming what he fears. To begin with, Rainsford has to pose as the weak against the strong, General Zaroff.
“The Most Dangerous Game” gives a reader a sense that there is a fun game being played, that might be dangerous to the people who play it. In the story, it turns out that the game is not a fun game, but it turns out to be a game between life and death. General Zaroff tells Rainsford, “[y]ou’ll find this game worth playing…the stake is not without value” (18). By saying this, the value that is at stake is the life of the individual that it involves. Anything that involves risking a life is not a game to most people, which makes it ironic how Zaroff calls it simply a game. Also, the word game is used to describe the size of an animal that is being hunted. Richard Connell titles the game in this story as “The Most Dangerous” (8). Richard uses verbal irony when he writes this title. If someone is hunting the most dangerous game, then that hunter’s life is in the most danger when he hunts that
Just like in every society, in every story there are conflicts. What is the line between man and beast? What separates the hunter from the hunted? Where does sport end and murder begin? In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the protagonist, a man by the name of Sager Rainsford, is trapped on an island in the middle of the ocean. A simple adventure to the jungles of Rio de Janeiro soon becomes a story of terror, survival and escape when Rainsford realizes he is not alone on the seemingly deserted island. Soon after arriving, he meets the psychopath, General Zaroff, a Cossack aristocrat who is also an experienced hunter. Zaroff entices Rainsford by telling him there is big game on the island, the biggest there is. The Most Dangerous Game illustrates that there are men, and then there are monsters when Rainsford, unknowing of what Zarloff’s true intentions are, becomes entangled in a frightening game of where the hunter, soon becomes the hunted.
In H.G. Wells War of the Worlds the humans’ instinct to survive overcomes threats to their existence.
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford, the protagonist, arrives at the mysterious Ship-Trap island, owned by the ruthless antagonist, General Zaroff. Once Rainsford is at Zaroff’s private estate, both men realize they share similar beliefs regarding how animals understand, however, their feelings diverge on the issue of hunting humans. Their contrasting views on human hunting makes Zaroff turn on Rainsford, which is the driving force behind their feud. Rainsford views Zaroff’s game, of hunting humans for pleasure, as cold blooded murder, although Zaroff believes, “No animal had a chance with me anymore,” (7). Zaroff creates an island that he presumes will grant him great pleasure because it will
One meaning of "The Most Dangerous Game" is what the general is hunting, which is other humans. For the general, the humans he hunts are like animals to him, they are his "game" as in what he hunts. They are the most dangerous game because they can think an statigize, unlike animals, therfore they are the most dangerous. The second meaning is the actual game of the hunt. When the general hunts the humans, it is only a game to him, but to the others it is a very dangerous game. Those are two meanings of what "The Most Dangerous Game" means.
