Human Suffering in Of Mice and Men George suffers in several different way. Since he promised Lennie's grandmother he would take of Lennie and watch over him always George is forced to put up with Lennie's stupidity, like the time when he grabbed a lady's velvet dress in Weed and caused George to lose his job on that ranch. Or the time when Lennie seized up and choked Curly's wife in a panic she would scream, causing her to die and causing George and him to lose that job as well. Lennie made some terrible mistakes and George suffered for each one of them, whether it be having to leave town, or frantically running for his life, George has suffered due to Lennie's bad decisions. If George didn't make a promise to Lennie's grandmother to watch over Lennie he would be able to do what he wants and be more care free due to the fact that he would have more money by himself rather than sharing it with Lennie, whether it'd be buying a prostitute or drinking himself blind, or doing them both at the same time, George would be able to do it if he didn't have to watch over Lennie. Lennie also suffers in a few ways, he suffers financially, mentally and socially. Since Lennie is not the smartest guy, it is very difficult for him to find work. He has a hard time listening and he has a very hard time making good decisions and therefore not many people want to hire him but George is there to help him find work but even though Lennie is able to find work he still is very low on cash because the ranch doesn't pay him what he deserves and what he does get paid is only just enough to live off. Lennie is very dependant on George, Lennie has a hard time making his own decisions, he has a hard time making the right decisions if any, so therefore I came to the conclusion that he suffers in the need of intelligence. Due to the fact that he isn't to smart, a lot of people do not like him and they do not want to be his friend, many guys at the ranch treat him as an outsider and therefore I feel he suffers in the need of a friend, he suffers from loneliness. Curly's wife is the only woman on the ranch and doesn't have a girlfriend that she can relate to or bond with. Curly gets very jealous of his wife whenever she even talks to another guy or makes a new friend and he yells at her whenever he does get jealous and therefore her social life suffers very much. Since her husbands jealousy has such a huge impact on her own life, and since she is the only woman on the ranch and doesn't have another girl nearby to relate to or bond with she becomes very lonely. That is why I feel she suffers from loneliness. Curly and his wife don't get along very well and she does not believe Curly is a real man her and her husband are always fighting and disagreeing with one another she becomes sad and suffers emotionally. She also suffers in poverty due to Curly's lack of money. The 3 main examples of human suffering would be financially, socially and they also suffer in their own mental states.
Lennie Small, a mentally impaired man, is first introduced to us traveling with George. George, however, is not related to Lennie. Lennie travels with George because no one else understands him like he does. Lennie says, “Because…because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you…” (Steinbeck 14). Lennie believes if George ever left him that he could live in a cave by himself and not bother anyone again (Steinbeck 12). Lennie realizes he would be alone without George, but he never has known anyone else to depend on but George, and from that, they have a bond, a friendship. This shows Lennie’s need for his relationship with George.
Lennie is broken and incomplete in many ways. He has a mental disability which differentiates him from the others. He depends on George for everything and cannot do things on his own even though he is a grown man.
Steinbeck makes Lennie and George well developed, with colourful personalities and appearances at the beginning, as both of them are looking for work during the Great Depression. From reading the first chapter, I feel that I can relate to George because of his wise, parent-like, and rigid personality. George is a very responsible and tries his best to take care of a very mentally unstable person, where getting irritated is very easy. I also experienced a similar situation, but not with a mentally disabled person. My grandfather, a heavy smoker and alcoholic, suffered a lot of mental problems referring to addiction, as well as health problems because he was diagnosed with throat cancer in the last six months of his life. It was a tough time for my family because both of my parents had to work in order to support the family, so I was the only person who could take care of him. Furthermore, he was confined to a hospital bed until the day he passed away. Staying by his side and providing whatever he wanted was very difficult because there was very little communication, besides writing, because he could not talk due to an artificial respirator in his throat. Staying in the hospital for the majority of the time over the course of six months is extremely tough because of school and family problems I had to deal with. This is relatable to the
The harsh reality is one which hit everyone in America in the 1930. People found work hard to find and crime was on the uprise. This meant, unfortunately, that innocent people were the easy prey and, as we see in the Of Mice and Men, there were plenty of characters that were easy prey. Of Mice and Men characters have and do thing that make them vulnerable in way which do cause trouble. In this essay, that harsh reality and easy prey will be shown through to see which characters are the most vulnerable.
John Steinbeck explores human experience in the novella ‘Of Mice and Men’ in friendship, loneliness and marginalisation. He does this through the characters as explained thought the paragraphs below.
In conclusion, George killing Lennie was a murder because of lack of consent and Lennie was not suffering physically. In this society, people are scared of the unknown, and that is how they lived. No one realized what they were doing was wrong. But Lennie was just like everyone else, only different because of a small, mental setback. The characters did not seem to realize that Lennie believed in a future ahead of him, and that he had hopes and dreams just like them. Life is incredibly short, and no one should deserve
You can 't keep a job and you lose me ever ' job I get. Jus ' keep me shovin ' all over the country all the time. An ' that ain 't the worst. You get in trouble. He puts Lennie 's problems. In front of his own and solves them in order to help Lennie.George knows Lennie gets in a lot of trouble. George is taking the risk of getting in trouble along with Lennie if anything were to happen to Lennie. George is willing to help Lennie by taking care of him and helping him the best he can.In Of Mice and Men, by Steinbeck, George takes in Lennie
Despite the frustration that Lennie causes, without him George would probably be a lot like the other men on the ranch; simply roaming the country-side of California looking for work, and although he often prides himself on being different, he sometimes complains, usually after Lennie has caused trouble, and wishes that he could be like a normal guy and not have to live with Lennie’s hindrance. An example of this is seen when George responds sharply to Lennie's constant request for ketchup. "If I was alone I could live so easy…no trouble…no mess at all.
Though George is a social and a smart migrant worker, he is still a very lonely guy who only has Lennie to rely on. George says, ”If i was alone, I could live so easy.” (p11) He says he would get along so well without him because he wouldn’t have to keep Lennie out of trouble all the time and he could keep a job. He also says, “Lennie, I want you to stay with me.” (p13) That states that
Considering the importance of this, Yale’s investment Committee reviewed its portfolio at least once a year. In order to decide the target allocation, the organization performed a mean-variance analysis of the expected returns and risks and compared them with those of past Yale allocations and the current mean allocation of other universities. Moreover, the organization also examined the long-run implications of its allocation for the downside risk to the
In revealing and promoting its new console through nontraditional means with multiple partners and six months before shipment, Microsoft stood to create goodwill with demanding gaming consumers and beyond. Talking to consumers now and bringing the Xbox 360 to stores before the end of 2005, probably long before Sony or Nintendo's new devices, will give Microsoft a big perceived lead in the market.
