Just as other interpersonal themes, sexual themes in film are often depictions of sexual themes that exist in real life relationships. For this very reason, it is very easy for a person to compare his relationships with that of a relationship shown in media or film. Some relationships are total train wrecks from the start while others are not necessarily ideal, but healthy. Although not seen very often, ideal couples in film are attributed with characteristics that are seen by society as desirable; youthful, attractive people who are hyper-sexual and affectionate. As cliché as it sounds, sometimes relationships are simply “complicated”. Such is the case in the film It’s Complicated. Just as the relationships depicted within the film are complex and complicated, so are relationships in real life. The name of the film It’s Complicated pretty much speaks for itself. It is a romantic comedy that addresses some really important sexual issues. The reason why I chose this film is because it displays a new perspective on relationships. Choosing this movie made me step out of my comfort zone. When most people think about sexuality, they think about young people. Very seldom does one equate sexuality with older people. In the film, It’s Complicated, it shows the complexity of relationships between middle-aged people. I thought that would be more interesting than choosing a film that showed human sexuality between the average young couple. The relationships in this film are not ideal in many ways. Jane, the main character, is a middle-aged chef who owns her own bakery. Her ex- husband of ten years, Jake, is an attorney. The reason why they divorced was due to the fact that he cheated on Jane with his current wife, the much younger Agnes. ... ... middle of paper ... ...self as it relates to sex. I never realized how strong of feelings I had towards issues dealing with sex. Because of the influences in my life, I never learned to express my ideas about sex in a positive way. Regardless, the course on human sexuality has taught me to be more open about the subject of sex. Many concepts that I have learned in the course are things that I will never forget. The area of contraception is one that surprisingly interested me the most. Like I stated before, I was never really naïve about sex, but I did not know everything there is to know either. I have grown to value sex education on contraception and condom use. Like many others, I once believed that sex was a taboo subject that people should not talk about. I now believe it is very important not to hide feelings about sex to express those feeling through education and understanding.
In The Return of the Secaucus Seven, while waiting for the others to arrive, a kerfuffle occurs between two of the individuals that were dating, Jeff and Maura, which is the end of their relationship. One of the friends, Irene, is bringing her new boyfriend and wonders if her long-term friends will accept him. As a representation this time period, relationships are highly focused on sex and sexual interactions. It is nonchalantly discussed and taken part, whereas previously these actions would have been absurd. Immature relationships and conversation between the characters are another representation of the carefree undertones in the movie.
Using the movie Love Jones I will talk about the characteristics of male/male and female/female relationship as they are portrayed in the film. Then I will talk about how different the female/male relationship is and focus primarily on their communication styles. There is some harsh vocabulary included in my essay but only in quotations that I have taken from the movie itself to communicate what was going on in the scenes I have chose to talk about.
Donna’s father is angry when he finds out and automatically assumes it means she’s going to have sex with many men. This example is representative of the double standard held between men and women. It wouldn’t be an issue if one of the boys had multiple partners or used birth control, but as soon as one of the females does, it is frowned upon. When Jackie hears that Donna is on the pill, she exclaims “you’re going to be so popular,” which implies women can only be well-liked if they please men. Then, Eric’s parents give him “the talk” and while Kitty mentions that foreplay is important, Red disagrees. This implies a woman’s pleasure is not important, as long as men are taken care of. While Laurie is home, Eric finds out that she is failing classes, perpetuating the “dumb blonde”

In the very first twenty-four hours of living together, two middle aged men who have never met before jump from being at each others throats, to being best friends in a matter of only five minutes during the movie. Knowing how people slowly trust one another, makes this movie hard to believe.
In the article “An Anthropological Look at Human Sexuality” the authors, Patrick Gray and Linda Wolfe speak about how societies look at human sexuality. The core concept of anthology is the idea of culture, the systems of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors people acquire as a member of society. The authors give an in depth analysis on how human sexuality is looked at in all different situations.
...noted to consist of more sexual themes than it did thirty years ago, a fact that changes the way erotic objectification can be analyzed as it can be considered to be more frequent and general but therefore also less purposely objectifying concerning the characters sex.
Masters and Johnson were a pioneering team in the field of human sexuality, both in the domains of research and therapy. William Howell Masters, a gynecologist, was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1915. Virginia Eshelman Johnson, a psychologist, was born in Springfield, Montana in 1925. To fully appreciate their contribution, it is necessary to see their work in historic context. In 1948, Alfred C. Kinsey and his co-workers, responding to a request by female students at Indiana University for more information on human sexual behavior, published the book Sexual Behavior in the Human Male. They followed this five years later with Sexual Behavior in the Human Female. These books began a revolution in social awareness of and public attention given to human sexuality. At the time, public morality severely restricted open discussion of sexuality as a human characteristic, and specific sexual practices, especially sexual behaviors that did not lead to procreation. Kinsey's books, which among other things reported findings on the frequency of various sexual practices including homosexuality, caused a furor. Some people felt that the study of sexual behavior would undermine the family structure and damage American society. It was in this climate - one of incipient efforts to break through the denial of human sexuality and considerable resistance to these efforts - that Masters and Johnson began their work. Their primary contribution has been to help define sexuality as a healthy human trait and the experience of great pleasure and deep intimacy during sex as socially acceptable goals. As a physician interested in the nature of sexuality and the sexual experience, William Masters wanted to conduct research that would lead to an objective understanding of these topics. In 1957, he hired Virgina Johnson as a research assistant to begin this research issue. Together they developed polygraph-like instruments that were designed to measure human sexual response. Using these tools, Masters and Johnson initiated a project that ultimately included direct laboratory observation and measurement of 700 men and women while they were having intercourse or masturbating. Based on the data collected in this study, they co-authored the book Human Sexual Response in 1966. In this book, they identify and describe four phases in the human sexual response cycle : excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. By this point in time, the generally repressive attitude toward sexuality was beginning to lift and the book found a ready audience.
Unlike sex, the history of sexuality is dependant upon society and limited by its language in order to be defined and understood.
There should be emotional supports and protects. The couple should communicate with each other and care about each other. It’s not a comparison about who is inferior or advanced. Responsibilities should be equal to both. More importantly, if something goes wrong, just leave to stop the loss. Like what Ana does in the movie, she rejects Jose directly, and she finally leaves Christian even though he is extremely attractive. This is what I should learn from her. A lot of women trapped in the relationships. Even though there is domestic violence or emotional abuses happen, they wouldn’t leave, and they will find a lot excuses to explain the reason. If I meet the wrong person or being forced to do something, I should say no resolutely. This movie brings a lot of thinking about sexuality, sexual orientation and gender issues, and it does influence audiences in many different
What is the first word that comes to your mind when I say the word “sex?” Sex for me is when two people have intercourse. You don’t necessarily have to be in love to have sex. Many people enjoy having sex with other people, because it feels good, or they just want to procreate. According to Auleb, in the class reader “Human Sexuality”, he states “Sex has more than one definition and can be used in many contexts.” Sex can mean multiple connotations to different people. People can think your asking them their gender when you ask them what the word sex means to them, or they can be talking about their vagina or penis. On the other hand, the word sexuality for me means that you have the power to feel sexual, and that is your sexuality. Many people don’t have a sexual side to them, because they don’t really like talking about the word sex, or the word sexuality. According to Auleb, Sexuality means “the quality of possessing a sexual character or potency, although some individuals’ sexuality may encompass little to no sexual behaviors”. Sexual identity is a very important word to understand. For me sexual identity means what gender you see yourself as, or who you are sexually attracted too. I believe sexual identity can be a
From birth, one's sexuality is shaped by society. Cultures institute behaviors that are to be seen as the societal norms, which work to constantly reinforce societal expectations of how genders should act in relation to one another. Although some may argue that one's sexuality is an innate characteristic resulting from genetic makeup, there is a large amount of evidence pointing to its social construction instead. Through the power differences between males and females, established gender roles, and drastic economic shifts, society establishes sexuality and reinforces the behaviors that are expected of its citizens.
In today’s society things are being expressed and experienced at younger ages, than ever before in our time. Children and teenagers are discovering their sexuality at very early ages. Sexuality is the discovering of who you are and what makes you different from everybody else.
...f this film include sexual content, violence and graphic details. But, when viewing this film we have to be aware of this and only let children see this movie if the adults feel that it will not affect them in any way, such as making them feel that this behavior is appropriate or any other thing that might be in their minds.
The terms gender and sexuality are can get mistaken for one or the other. Gender refers to the social term that is given to a specific sex. Gender is typically either female or male. The term sexuality refers to people’s sexual interest or desires to other people. Different types of sexuality are heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, pansexual, and other types. Gender and sexuality can be used to identify their sexuality, communication with others, and learn how to find a community of people that are alike.
