This morning I interviewed a lovely young lady from the Key Peninsula Family Resource Center. Gina is the Center’s Coordinator and a social worker. Gina earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Social Work from the University of Washington and has been employed at the center for six months. She will be continuing her education at the University of Washington for her Masters in Social Work. She informed me that a Bachelor’s in Social Work or a similar degree in Human Services is very important to attain work in the field. Additionally good time management skills, a good sense of professionalism and how to work with people from different social and economic backgrounds. However, the most important quality is a good attitude.

The agency started her at $17.07 an hour and 24 hours a week. Her benefits include paid vacation and paid sick leave. The agency offered on the job training entailing training at the Health Department to include positive parenting classes and racial equality training. They also paid for her to take a grant writing course and they offer webinars throughout the year for those interested. The agency also pays for her travel expenses and compensates for missing time from work while in training. Gina recommended joining the National Association of Social Workers and Partners for our Children which is an email newsletter that offers local and national trainings. Her advice for me was to keep an open mind about what type of social work I want to do and to make sure that I network. She encouraged me to showcase my diverse work experience and Interdisciplinary degree making connections of the applicability to the positions I am applying. Furthermore, she told me to volunteer and job shadow as much as possible to get a better idea of what it is that I want to do. Social workers address people’s problems every day, but it’s the identification of people’s strengths that provides clues for how to solve their problems and improve their life situations (Saleeby, 2013, pp.17-20).
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. The purpose of this interview is to explore human service professional in their work environment, and observe human service professional in their particular settings, what type of education is required for their position of choice. The human services profession has a variety of populations that they serve; this is a wide array of people. Human service professionals serve populations such as, high-risk mothers who may have shortfalls in education, psychosocial, nutritional, and little or no transportation. Another is the homeless population, lack housing due to being unable to afford, or maintain safe and adequate housing. The elderly is a population that is increasing, there needs range from chronic illness, lack of or little education, mentally, financial, loss of independence, and stereotyping. They serve those diagnose with a chronic illnesses, such illnesses may be diagnoses of , high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, there is also the chronic mentally ill who are consider high risk, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD(attention deficit hyperactive disorder). These are just a few of the services that a human service professional may work with.
Becoming a social worker is dependent on numerous factors, one of which being education. “A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) degree is the most common minimum requirement to qualify for a job as a social worker, however, majors in psychology, sociology, and related fields may be sufficient to qualify for some entry-level job” (Chao & Orr, 162). Many people when pursuing the goals of being a social worker, however, are most interested in jobs in public agencies and/or having their own practices. “A master’s degree in social work (MSW) is necessary for positions in health and mental health settings and typically is required for certification for clinical work” (Chao & Orr, 162). One’s level of school is not the only thing employers are focusing on when looking to hire social workers. Along with one’s education, a social worker must have “a broad liberal arts base which includes a knowledge of the social sciences (sociology, psychology, anthropology, history, political science, and economics) to provide explanations about the nature of human society and the human condition” (Johnson, 48). There are many more skills that are just as essential, if not more beneficial, to the employer as well as client.

How well a business manages its assets and resources predicates its overall success. Companies that spend financial resources foolishly are apt to find themselves in bankruptcy. Companies that work capital equipment resources beyond the machine’s capabilities or for other than intended purposes are apt to experience downtime and/or lose the equipment to failure. The same premise holds true for a company’s human assets. However, unlike other company assets, which depreciate over time, human assets appreciate over time when managed properly. I chose to interview Regina Geis, who holds the administrative role as acting supervisor for the County Mental Health adult day program, which provides services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Ms. Geis has held this position for 15 months. This is her first managerial position within a human service agency. Her style of management has changed over this short period of time. She feels that she is now more direct with her direction with staff. She stated, “Maybe now I come across as a little bit cold. But I have learned that I now have to use the least amount of words to get my point across.”
Captain Rob Geis agreed to be interviewed and share his experiences with the next generation of Social Workers. Native to Ohio, he graduated High School in 1979, he continued his education at Ohio State University from 1982-1986, completing his Masters in Social Work. For the past 24 years, he has served as a Social Worker in the United States Army. In his current position he is responsible for the Department of Social Work Services. Previous positions have included: two assignments as a Division Social Worker, Medical Inpatient Social Worker, Chief of Social Work, Division Chief of Mental Health, Clinical Director of Army Substance Abuse Program, Combat Operation Stress Control Commander, and General Staff Officer (Geis, 2012). Academic positions have included both, the Army Long Term Health Education and Training (LTHET) as well as the Command and General Staff College.
To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
As a student who began her college career without specific objectives, I never thought I would be writing a personal statement for an application to receive a Master’s Degree in the social work profession. However, I feel now that there is no other future for me than that of offering my education and personal commitment to vulnerable individuals in order to stabilize their lives. After careful consideration of all areas of social work, I have found that my main area of interest is in providing resources and encouragement for individuals with disabilities to gain the freedom to live independent lifestyles without discrimination. My personal goal in this profession is to make every possible effort in assisting these individuals with finding the means to satisfy their needs.
First quality is the ability to care for others. When people ask me what am I going to school for and I tell them Social Work. They then say, “Well that is a good field of work for you because, I can see you have a big heart and like to be there and help people.” I like being recognized for following my dreams and working so hard for my degree. I am known for being so helpful. The second quality is I have always wanted to have a career in this field I never wanted to be anything else in life. You must have that ability that passion, and the patients to care for others. You cannot be a respectable Child Welfare Worker without these certain qualifications. I have all these requirements which is why I strive to become a Child Welfare Worker. The third quality I have is not being bias I treat all people like humans. Even the bad people in this world deserve to be treated as humans. The aspects that interest me the most in this field is that we get to work with people who really depend on us and need our help. We get to be the reason children can feel safe. I want to be that Child Welfare Worker that rises to the top of the field. This week I asked my field instructor what skills, knowledge, and values are most needed by social work students in my practicum setting? My supervisor responded, “ You should have a high compassion level for people along with a mutual respect for them, a wider range of community services that are available in the area, and be well versed and rounded in crisis intervention theory along with cultural diversity. Everything that my field supervisor suggested coincides with the generalist competencies described in table 3.1, there is nothing that contrasts with this table.
