This morning I interviewed a lovely young lady from the Key Peninsula Family Resource Center. Gina is the Center’s Coordinator and a social worker. Gina earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Social Work from the University of Washington and has been employed at the center for six months. She will be continuing her education at the University of Washington for her Masters in Social Work. She informed me that a Bachelor’s in Social Work or a similar degree in Human Services is very important to attain work in the field. Additionally good time management skills, a good sense of professionalism and how to work with people from different social and economic backgrounds. However, the most important quality is a good attitude.

The agency started her at $17.07 an hour and 24 hours a week. Her benefits include paid vacation and paid sick leave. The agency offered on the job training entailing training at the Health Department to include positive parenting classes and racial equality training. They also paid for her to take a grant writing course and they offer webinars throughout the year for those interested. The agency also pays for her travel expenses and compensates for missing time from work while in training. Gina recommended joining the National Association of Social Workers and Partners for our Children which is an email newsletter that offers local and national trainings. Her advice for me was to keep an open mind about what type of social work I want to do and to make sure that I network. She encouraged me to showcase my diverse work experience and Interdisciplinary degree making connections of the applicability to the positions I am applying. Furthermore, she told me to volunteer and job shadow as much as possible to get a better idea of what it is that I want to do.
