Human rights violation We live in a world where people are very opinionated. Even if some opinions may be completely nonsense, they still have the right to freedom of opinion because it is their fundamental human right. As for people of today, they use social media networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook to voice their thoughts and express their feelings about certain topics, most commonly beauty fashion tips and how unfair it is that Leonardo Dicaprio has yet to receive an Oscar. There are people who also write about environmental issues, as basic human right the economy and politics; that has caused a lot of commotion. Due to that, “commotion” countries like China, Vietnam, and Pakistan have blocked many famous social networking sites and now recently Venezuela has blocked twitter because they feel that they are tweeting anti-governmental propaganda. Why is it that the people, who supposedly rule a country for the better of the people’s wellbeing, do not give them a fair chance to voice their opinions? (Picture 4) As we know western civilization began in the bosom of Greece, nurtured by the romans, saved by the Muslim philosophers and flourished during the renaissance. Tyrants, Catholic Church and kings ruled Europe during the dark ages and mediaeval times. These kings or I would like to call them Tyrants had the supreme power over their subjects and the pope was not a useless symbol as he is today. Spanish inquisition comes to mind when we think about how powerful the church was back then. Renaissance was an enlightenment period where astonishing people such as Copernicus and Galileo through science changed the whole concept of how we saw the world back then. The Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment gave strength to the idea of the individual as a “thinking being” with a unique consciousness. They should have the freedom to choose how to live their life and be responsible of their own actions. The basis of the humanistic view of human nature was the outlook that every human being has an intrinsic value. Humanism also includes that all people should be considered equal. This view of the individual is the basis for the modern human rights that says that everyone is born free and equal in dignity. It includes everyone, at all times and all places regardless of ethnicity, gender, religious belief or nationality. It does not matter if the country one lives in is poor, rich or at war. No excuse is big enough to set aside human rights. Society must ensure citizens' right to freedom and equality.
