According to Gunther (n.d.), “There are more than 326 million trillion gallons of water on earth (para. 1).” With so much water on earth, how can there possibly be a lack of access to fresh water for drinking? There are two types of water that make up earth’s supply; freshwater and saltwater. Freshwater makes up roughly 3% of earth’s water supply, while saltwater makes up roughly 97% (National Geographic, n.d.). Freshwater is what humans and animals can drink and survive off of. Salt water they cannot. The majority of freshwater is inaccessible. It is frozen in glaciers and icecaps, leaving about 1% available as surface water (N.G., n.d). The human right to water and sanitation states, “Everyone has the right to sufficient, continuous, safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic use (WHO, 2015, “Introduction,” para. 2).” Lack of water safety, and sanitation continues to be a significant issue to billions worldwide. In the United States, public water systems are monitored and tested annually to ensure they meet national drinking standards. In other regions such as Africa, water systems are not monitored as closely. In these regions, they lack the knowledge, education and resources needed to understand the concernment of meeting drinking standards. Lack of education to properly assess water quality in Africa, and regions similar, puts them at a higher risk of exposure to contaminants. Very harmful chemicals, and microorganisms could be polluting their water systems without their knowledge. This could lead to widespread disease, and death to residents of the affected area. It is unsafe to hold some regions of the world to a strict drinking standard, and others to a lesser, more lenient standard. Water has become a very controversial issue in the United States and around the world. As populations increase and resources decrease, the way we use our resources and keep populations safe become more and more important. Throughout the world there are nearly 1.1 billion people who do not have access the clean drinking water. 5 Most of these 1.1 billion people are located in poor areas and do not have the financial means to build the infrastructures needed to provide water to the citizens of their country. 5 Drinking water is an essential part of our everyday life. People must have water to survive, but it must be clean and safe to consume.
Water is one of the most vital components of human life. It is a necessity, a precious resource that humans need to live, that is taken for granted every day. There is no possible way for life to be sustained on Earth without water – it just cannot happen. The human body itself is composed of almost eighty percent water: almost 95 percent of the human brain is water. It is common knowledge that pure water is the best water – for humans, and for plants and animals. Regardless of this piece of knowledge, humans still find ways to disregard the sanctity of pure water and instead, pollute it. The right to water is not officially a human right. However, because “water is a basic need for human development, health, and well-being… it is an internationally accepted human right” (Thompson 3). Water contamination is an epidemic that is so common these days that it is no longer shocking to even hear that water is contaminated. Water contamination negatively effects water that is used on a daily basis. Continuing on in this way will eventually lead to contamination that will make the existence of clean water impossible.
Every year about 5 million people die from a water related crisis. Whether it be dirty water or no water at all. People who live in countries like the United States of America don 't think about the growing water problem. Most of them have all the water they could ever ask for, but that 's not the case in most countries around the world. 1.2 billion people in the world don 't have clean drinking water. In third world countries usually the woman and children are the ones left without any clean drinking water. Everyone has the right to have clean drinking water and sanitation. Water is essential for humanity’s survival, and even though the world is largely covered by water, only a small percentage is only usable for human consumption. Approximately, on average, 120,000 gallons of water are used annually for a single-family household (Galbraith). This alarming number could be reduced dramatically for the efforts of water conserving and lower water bill prices for families and subsequently saving money that could be used for other expenses. Thus, conserving water would prove beneficial and advantageous to not just Texas, but for everyone else as well. Although environmental policies have been not as popular with Congress and the state legislature, it is still an important problem to consider since there are only a limited amount of resources for public use, such as water.
Clean and safe drinking water resources are becoming scarce as the population grows. The world is facing many problems, but the most important thing needed to survive, is water. Water is getting low in many countries, therefore residents are suffering the misfortune of not having the reliable source of clean water. Today many countries are having water shortages meaning rivers, lakes, streams and groundwater are not enough to rely on for supplying water demands. Having clean water to drink means that water must have microbial, chemical and physical characteristics that meet WHO guidelines or national standards on drinking water quality. Around 780 million people in the world don’t have access to clean drinking water (Millions Lack Safe Water). More than 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation, and hygiene-related causes. Nearly all deaths, 99 percent, occur in developing countries. Around the world, diseases in unclean water kill about 1,400 children every day (Clean Drinking Water). There are many organizations that raise money in order to help develop ways or create ways for people to obtain clean drinking water. However, many people are unaware that this is even a problem in other countries because we take clean water for granted.
There are many types of pollution. The main types of pollution are water, air, soil, thermal, radioactive, noise, and light. The topic for this experiment is Water Pollution. Water Pollution became a problem in the 1900’s when water started being treated like sewage. Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970 because of 1900’s pollution. Water Pollution also affects humans and animals.
