“If all of humankind originated from Africa, why are we all not black?”
Evolution has always been an area of great fascination for me. Since the beginning of my journey as a Life Sciences student, evolution has always been my favourite section alongside the human anatomy. Learning more and more about the human anatomy, I leant that all humans are the same on the inside, but we’re all different on the outside. In grade 10 we learnt that all humans originated from one place on Earth but in grade 12, we learnt that humans have the same genotype (all the genes an organism carries in its chromosomes) but since all of this is true, why is it that we all have various phenotypes( appearance of an organism) ? This led me to wonder why is it that according to Darwin. C, (1959) “Out of Africa theory” we all come from the same place, and are built the same but we don’t all look like those who still live in the origin of mankind? Why doesn’t everyone look like a true African man or woman? Why aren’t we all black?

Australopithecus afarensis who existed 3.5 million years ago and a 4.4 million year old skeleton of an Ardipithecus ramidus are the closest science has come to discovering the human lineage. Shattered Ancestry an article written by Katherine Harmon discusses the remains of two hominids found within Ethiopia. These skeletal remains have created a huge controversy within the topic of evolution questioning many assumptions that have been made referencing the human lineage. The skeleton of the Australopithecus afarensis was named Lucy and was discovered in 1974. The evidence of her walking upright on her two feet essentially guaranteed her a spot in the human lineage line. Lucy was a chimplike ape that was said to walk upright making scientists believe the human ancestry was simple. The complete skeleton found in Ethiopia of an Ardipithecus ramidus named Ardi completely changed all assumptions made from scientists about the complexity of the human lineage. These remains have encouraged researches that the human line is not the only lineage to have evolved but the chimpanzee line has undergone drastic changes as well. There are many traits that researchers have always directly linked to the human lineage however since these discoveries occurred researchers are reconsidering. The Homo erectus was an early species of Homo and the likely descendant of the H. Habilis; the first Hominin species to move out of Africa into Asia and Europe. These were the Hominins that began to develop the characteristics behaviors that we see in living humans, that increasingly engaged intelligence and displayed adaptive flexibility, and the first depended on material culture. Human characteristics have evolved all throughout history and have been manipulated on a global scale through the use of science and technology. Genetic modification is one such process in which contemporary biotechnology techniques are employed to develop specific human characteristics. Despite this, there are a countless number of negative issues related with genetic modification including discrimination, ethical issues and corruption. Hence, genetic modification should not be used to enhance human characteristics.
It is because of the activities we have done, and more importantly the people I have been introduced to, such as Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop that I am able to expand my horizons and maybe get a glimpse on what I have been missing. When a man who himself is African and shows how he believes so strongly in where he came from, it’s hard not to start to believe it yourself. Not only did he express his opinions, but he provided several research studies and findings that can link our evolution to Africa and prove himself. With skulls of different species, they could tell what race the men were and it even showed the development from the beginning to a homosapien sapien. With the fifth out of six species not having much of a forehead, you could come to the conclusion that the brain would also be different; sure enough it was missing the anterior lobe of the brain. That to me is just mind blowing and allowed me to be open to the idea that maybe there was an evolution from one species to the next.
Human beings are no exception to biological evolution. Like other organisms around the world, humans have significantly changed overtime and have developed all sorts of diverse characteristics. One noticeable characteristic of human beings is the variation of skin color. Skin color has been used to identify, classify, and verify the variation that exists in the human population around the world. How did such a distinct variation arise and how did it play into adaptation?
A Genetic Odyssey’ is an interesting movie to watch. There were many thoughts that passed my mind as I watched the movie. First of all, it was interesting to visualize the movie back in the day, assuming how one single man lived in Africa approximately sixty thousand years ago. It is quite amazing to have traced the records so far behind to find that Adam could be the father of homo sapiens after all. The better question arises when there are different sizes, races and shapes to each human being.

Firstly, in order to compresence the complexity of our debate, we have to take in mind the definition of nature and nurture. Yes, is true that some of our characteristics are inherited by our ancestors, most of our physical characteristics, such as hair color and type; the pigmentation of our skin, those are a product of our genes thus our DNA (Jewel, 2007).
If you were told to believe a side of an argument that did not have majority of evidence points on its side, would you? The theories of evolution, creation and intelligent design have been a debated controversy for years and years. These three theories have three different ideas. The theory that creationists have is to believe that concept and design require a Creator. Creationists usually tend to believe that each organism is created as a single and distinct organism. Evolutionists tend to believe that all life started from single celled organisms. They believe that these single celled organisms are part of a continuing evolution over a very long period of time and that this evolution results in the development of new varieties and different species. People who believe in intelligent design believe in the theory that the universe cannot have arisen by chance and was designed and created by some intelligent entity. Evolution is the theory that is most probable because of the fossil record, similarities in all organisms and genetic changes in a population over time.
In the Pleistocene Era, hominins have been expanded rapidly in terms of survival, such as availability of food resources, migrating and how they defend their territories. Then, this has been lead hominins to develop intelligence and create a wide variety of tools. However, there is no specific evidence or answer to, how did human beings evolve and where did they come from. Environmental conditions or pressures have been played importantly, that contributed to the selection of the genus Homo in Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and there is an anatomical evidence over the past one million years, culminating in our modern genome; leads to developing human cognition and explains why modern humans are the only ones who exists today.

Throughout history, humans have asked many questions in regards to our own beginnings. Religion and science have examined what makes us who we are, and have tried to answer the enduring question of our own modern origins. Scientifically, theories are still debated as to when, where, and how modern Homo sapiens came to be what they are today. There are two major theories that now dominate the discussions of experts in the field of biological anthropology: the “Out-of-Africa” model and the “Multiregional” model of evolution. Stringer and Andrews argue that genetic and paleontological evidence supports a more recent Out-of-Africa model as opposed to a more drawn out Multiregional method that also incorporates gene flow (1263). In contrast, Wolpoff, Hawks, and Caspari claim that the Multiregional model is misunderstood, and clearing up discrepancies could bolster support for this theory instead (129). Pearson notes that while people like Wolpoff et al defend the Multiregional model, archaeological evidence seems to show that likely no intermixture between modern Homo sapiens and other archaic hominins happened during the spread of early Homo sapiens out of Africa (145). It is easy to see that the debate lingers onwards with an end not clearly in sight. This paper will further examine the arguments asserted by these authors and identify their core arguments, the data they use to support their arguments and determine which paper is the most convincing of the three.
The topic for discussion, “We are One Species”, is a very apt and befitting one. Species may be varied and different kinds of organisms. We, as people, may look different, we may live in a diverse World, we may speak different languages, we may come from different backgrounds, race, culture, or customs, still inherently and intrinsically, we are the same or belong to one species.
What makes us human? What is it that we are made up of? I know a human has a body made up of two legs, two arms, two eyes, a nose, a mouth, and two ears, but that is not what makes us human. Human beings are made up of feelings, the ability to think, communication, and many other elements. Feelings show the way we feel between each other and is the reason for our survival. When human evolution is brought up, the main things that may come to mind is people developing a third eye or having x-ray vision.
