individual cooperation task. Depending on the social or personal task, individuals may experience a sense of overly cooperating to the point of losing sight of their own sense of judgement while heavily cooperating and complying with others around them. Throughout society, various groups of individuals are formed based upon social class, beliefs, religious sects, and minorities. Some groups are classified as gangs, depending on what must be done in order to enter the specific group, along with what they stand for, and the position that they hold within society. A bully is someone who is described as an individual who utilizes physical or mental strength, in order to manipulate or intimidate another person. Over the course of history, individuals within society have been victims or offenders of bullying. Most education systems lack the proper access to resources and funding, which allows for many cases of bullying to remain unresolved, or they are neglected entirely because of the high rate of bullying within the particular school system. Human cooperation and bullying are directly associated, due to the fact that a victim of a bully feels that he or she must compromise their self-worth, self-esteem, or personal belongings, in order to survive within their environment. However, individual bullies are not the only ones that exist, as many individuals intertwine themselves into a group of bullies. People who are encouraged to join a group of bullies may be doing so, in order to cooperate and avoid the victim environment. Direct reciprocity accurately describes what victims and offenders experience within the situation of bullying, as more times than not, victims result to cooperating with the bully, in order to reach some sort of solution. However, this type of negative human cooperation and negative direct reciprocity does not result in an exchanging of understanding and compromises of cooperation between both individuals, rather victims are expected to accept the bully and their reign and cooperate the next time. Indirect reciprocity is demonstrated when a group of individuals are identified as the bullies, as communication travels throughout a small system, such as a school, or through a larger establishment, as the surrounding community. However, the negative aspects of this type of indirect reciprocity does not bring positive comments concerning reputation,
The kids became gang members for many reasons. Some needed to find what their place was in the world, and they needed to know who they were as human beings. Joining the gang gave them a feeling of being involved in something and made them feel better about themselves. They felt that as a gang member they received the attention, emotional support, and understanding that they couldn’t get from their actual family members at home.
Bullying is when a person or group frequently harms someone who is weaker or more vulnerable then themselves. They do this by means of physical, verbal, or mental abuse. Bullies can be male, female, young or old. The nature of a bully depends on many factors such as sex, age, and past experiences. Depending on the nature of the bully, their actions can have many negative effects on others. Bullies display many characteristics such as aggression, rivalry, and competitive behavior. Bullying occurs in many different places, a good example is in the novel The Lord of the Flies. Jack, the antagonist in this novel, displays many characteristics of a bully. Many children have been victimized by the terrible acts of bullies.
A gang is a group of reoccurring individuals or close partners with a high potential leadership in a certain organization, taking control over territory in a specific area by either identifying themselves as to whom they are or claiming control, engaging individually or collectively in violence or other forms of illegal action. To become a part of gang in today’s world you show your loyalty by committing such crimes as murder, robbery and/or theft in order to be accepted as a member of its group [1].
A gang is a loosely organized group of individual people who join forces for social reasons. Or anti-social reasons depending on how one looks at it. A person may join a gang for numerous reasons. These reasons include the need for “identity, discipline, recognition, love, money, and belonging.” 5 “Today there are approximately 274 Blood and Crip gangs in Los Angeles County alone.” 1 The gangs that are often in the news are usually made up of African-Americans. “African-Americans first formed street gangs in the late 1920s and early 1930s on the east side of Los Angeles near Central and Vernon Avenues. They were also forming in the downtown area of Los Angeles around the same time.” 4
There are some positives to being a gang member, believe it or not. The first reason why gangs can be good is that it forms a brotherhood and relationships. This is because when gangs get together they become a family and they all become best friends or “brothers.” Another reason would be that it can provide safety. It provides safety because many gangs live by, “mess with one member, you mess with the whole gang.” So if you are involved in a gang. You have a lot of guys that have your back if you stumble upon conflict. But, you must do the same for the other gang
Furthermore, there is usually an initiation into a gang that is a ritual ceremony. They do this to see if you have what it takes to join a gang. Some
The cons of being in a gang would be that you have to stay loyal to the gang, if they ask you to murder someone close to you because they got in the way or is part of another gang, can cause a role conflict. Breaking rules of the gang would get you either killed or beaten for a certain amount of time. Though gang life does have structure, it can easily overwhelm a new member. The thought of having seven members beat on you or having to commit a violent crime, can easily force an individual to have second thoughts. Those who do become initiated and rise through the ranks have allow the culture to consume them. The violent culture, the needs and wants of the gang surpass the needs and wants of the individual and in that they live only to serve the gang.
No one knows exactly how many children and youth nationwide are gang members or join a gang in an average day, but the numbers are astonishing and increasing. What is it about gangs that is so appealing to children? Gangs offer identity which a child may not have felt he or she had before. Gangs also offer belonging, protection, money, sex, and status. The majority of the children who become involved in such groups as gangs usually don't have a sense family or belonging to anyone, are lonely, and are looking for friends. Some may think that gangs are actually a good thing in that they offer so many positive things to a child's life. That is where some go wrong, and make the biggest mistake of their lives.
When one hears the word “gangs”, many would start leaving the premises or speak in hushed whispers due to the threats attached to these groups. Some would argue, especially its members, that the perceptions on gangs are exaggerated considering that not all gangs are violent in nature. Regardless of these arguments, many often fear gangs as history and the media portray the violence and chaos brought by these groups when they are in their territories or fighting rival organizations. However, there are several sentiments being raised by people when it comes to the possible impacts of gang membership to the individual who become involved with these gangs. How much changes would these gangs bring to the individual and the community? Gang membership
...l with. But getting into and staying in a gang isn’t that simple, inmates that want to join a gang is tested, they have to show proof of the crime they committed and based on the crime they can either join the gang or be beaten by the gang members. Like most other groups there is a leader, the person that calls the shots, the gang leaders also develop rules that the members have to follow and the punishments for breaking the rules.
Bullying, it is a major issue around many people, the world, and often reported in the news. Many who experienced bullying with or without knowing that they have been bullied or even bullied other people. There are many reasons for people to become bullies, and it is happening all around us. Bullying comes in many different forms: physical bullying, verbal bullying, relational bullying, psychological bullying, and social bullying. In the past, bullying can only happen in person, but with improving technologies, there is a new kind of bullying called cyber-bullying.
Everyone has been bullied or encountered someone being bullied at some point of their life. Whether it would be physically or verbally both can be exceedingly traumatizing and can have a long-term psychological influence on children’s development. Majority people may define bullying in a more physical term; nevertheless that’s not always the case. The act of bullying can occur in several ways and in reality affect the individual in the same way. Bullying is generally defined as repeated, negative, and harmful actions focused at target throughout a course of time, exhibiting a sense of power difference between the bully and the victim (Olweus, 1993; Limber & Mihalic, 1999 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). A survey was conducted in the United States estimating that over six million children, about 30% in grade six through ten have experienced frequent bullying in a school environment (Nansel, 2001 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). Many people might debate that bullying is something that every child goes through and is simply a part of growing up, although there are several damaging consequences that happens to the child’s brain. Bullying causes the child to feel upset, isolated, frightened, anxious, and depressed. They feel like they reason they are being picked on is because there is something wrong with them and may even lose their confidence feel unsafe going to school (Frenette, 2013 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005) Anthropologically, sociologically, or psychologically, bullying can be analyzed through different perspectives and several questions can be asked based on the topic:
When someone first thinks of bullying, their perception of the bully may be someone who chooses to be mean or cruel to another due to their own low self-esteem. This concept however is one that may not be true at all. In fact, according to Jaana Juvonen, a professor of developmental psychology at UCLA, who has published multiple books and articles on this subject, a bully usually has a very high self-esteem and is usually from the group that one would consider being the “popular crowd”. People outside the gang life see only either the climate of fear created by the gangs or the sense of belonging experienced by those inside of them. What they do not see is the day to day reality of living inside their secrets - the initiations, the daily rituals, the network of friends and enemies, all of the information they each have that could get them killed upon suspicion of informing. A friend of mine who belongs to a gang once told me that a gang is more than your family, it is your entire life. Once a person has joined a gang, they can not see past it. The gang takes over everything, leaving no time for school, work, or any other commitments that a member may have made prior to joining.
Bullying is an issue that is a problem in society today. Bullying is any kind of unwanted behavior to an individual on repeated occasions which is a display of power over someone. Bullying is mainly common among students in school, and unfortunately, it happens in other places like at home between parents and children, and on rare occasions, among adults. When people began to identify bullying for what it is, it was only known as a physical aggression towards others, but over the course of time, bullying has moved from just physical bullying to verbal bullying, and power abuse in the workplace between co-workers in different ranks. In a book called Welfare Brat: A Memoir, Mary was bullied in school by boys on the streets, and unfortunately, she was verbally bullied by her mom. Bullying among children in the society is caused by different reasons, and affects its victims negatively.
