Hubert de Givenchy (1927- ) Every culture and religion has its own style of fashion that sets them apart. Fashion plays a remarkable role in, not only culture and religion, but also identifying personalities, beliefs and thoughts. A leading country that is well-known for its fashion design would be France. “The French were the first to make an industry out of fashion since the 17th century.” There are many French designers from the fashion leading capital, Paris. Those designers would be Chanel, Pierre Cardin, Céline, Chloe, Dior, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Hermès, Lanvin, Marcel Rochas, Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent. In 1952, he established his couture house, la Maison Givenchy, launching his collection of light floor-length skirts and stunning blouses including the feted Bettina Blouse, named after the model Bettina Graziani. Two years later, Givenchy became the first couturier to present a luxury ready-to-wear line. His philosophy was simply, “Balenciaga was my religion.” “There’s Balenciaga and the good Lord,” he said once during an interview. Givenchy encountered a romantic twist with his first iconic muse, Audrey Hepburn, in 1953. She would have on most of his clothing in any of the films she was in. "The little black dress is the hardest thing to realize," Givenchy said once to the Independent in an interview in 2010, "because you must keep it simple." It once spread that Givenchy to Hepburn was more than a couturier, and she to him far more than a muse. Theirs was a relationship not only of professional advantages, but one of deep and long-lasting affection that continued for more than forty years. 1957 was also the year Givenchy launched his first perfume, L'interdit. He was born 1839, and he died in the year 1889. In the mid-1870s, the artist and printmaker introduced Degas to monotype. He declared Degas to make “prints as a painter not as a printmaker.” Lepic experimented on what he called “eau-forte mobile,” or etching, which he identified in the prints of Rembrandt. The way Lepic would do his traditional etching would start off by drawing on the plate through a “specially prepared ground.” He would then place it in a bath of acid, which lead to it chemically incising the marks into the plate. He would lay ink down over the entire plate. The ink on the surface is wiped away so that only the etched lines would be printed. Lepic began this method, but then manipulated the ink in different ways on the etched plate. He created changes in the season, time of the day, and weather.
