There are many ways to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime. The three most important areas to lessen the chances are to educate yourself, pay more attention and hardening the target.
As we grow older, we are supposed to become wiser and smarter about the world around us. We sometimes fall into the trap of thinking someone looks nice, act nice towards us, and is trying to help us. We have seen on too many occasions of these kinds of acts, or more importantly these kinds of people, take advantage of the retired. You have worked your share, and now it is your time to relax and enjoy life. Educating yourself involves doing a little research about something someone tells you. For example, if you need your house painted or maintenance done, ask a friend if they have used someone. Check references and ask for certifications, documentations or state certifications. If someone drives up and solicits a service to you without you initiating it, ask yourself what are their motivations. Educating yourself goes a long way to protecting the interest that you have worked so hard for over the years.

Since 776 BCE, the Olympics have been a way for people of different cultures to come together and compete in friendly competition. In 1892 the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, although it had been over a thousand years since the last game it still had brought together an assortment of different religions and ethnic groups together. Many factors shaping the Olympic Games reflect the changes that have taken place in our world since the last game in 393 CE in Greece such changes include woman’s suffrage, global economy, world wars, and proving competency.
Athletic events at this time were also closely related to the religious beliefs and practices of the Greek citizens. Each competition was devoted to a specific pagan god. For example, the patron of the Olympics was Zeus. The Greeks believed that the physical strength and ability of athletes was a direct gift from the gods (http://www.meiaconcerto.com/olympic/olympia/ideal_o.php, September 27, 2004). Therefore, each athlete competed not only in honor of his city-state, but also in honor of the gods.

(Gschwandtner) Red Bull is currently available in over 165 countries, resulting in over 35 billion cans sold. Red Bull's owner states that most of its success came from bringing consumers to the product rather than the other way around. When we think of an Olympic athlete it is one who has proven himself not only to be a champion in his own country, but one of world-class skill. This idea contrasts with the Ancient Olympic athlete who could only be a free man that spoke Greek. Furthermore, there were fewer events in the games of old. There wasn't any water polo, ping pong, or any other games that strayed from the basic contests. Another way the games of Ancient Greece differ from the modern games is that the ancient games were always held in the same city of Olympia. That is much different from today, as the games are held in a different country every time and nations compete for the honor of holding the games in their country years in advance. There is no limitation on the ways people may be victimized. The potential becomes even greater when the perpetrator is a complete stranger. This is why it is important for people to take the initiative and make themselves a less appealing target. In terms of robbery better home security and a more random pattern of behavior can help. In general people need to be aware of their surroundings. There is no way to predict stranger-on-stranger violence. However people can take measures to protect themselves from becoming a target. This is important considering there is the possibility of harm or death.
Ronald V Clarke originally developed the idea of situational crime prevention in the 1980’s (Brantingham & Brantingham 2005). This particular crime prevention theory addresses techniques that increase the effort required to commit the crime, increase the risks involved with committing the crime, reducing the reward gained by the offender after committing the crime, reducing the provocation between the offender and others and remove excuses (Brantingham & Brantingham 2005). Majority of crime is believed to be committed because there are no high risks of being caught and the rewards outweigh the risks (Brantingham & Brantingham 2005). Increasing the effort by controlling access to locations and target hardening can deflect many offenders, as more effort is needed to commit the crime (Brantingham & Brantingham 2005). Another main technique would be to increase the risks; this may be achieved by extending guardianship, creating natural surveillance or artificial surveillance such as CCTV (Brantingham & Brantingham 2005).
Similarly, routine activity theory argues that attention should be focused on the condition in which the crime takes place rather than on the offender. It was devised by Cohen and Felson (1979). They argued that the contemporary society invites high crime by generating illegal opportunities such as public display of expensive portable goods (iPods, iPads, laptops, mobile phones) which are carried out by individuals.
Approaches to crime prevention have emerged over time and are demonstrated in different solutions, practices, and policies executed by law enforcement, courts, corrections, family, and community. Some of the dominant approaches to crime prevention currently used by law enforcement, courts, corrections, family, and community are: situational crime prevention, crime prevention through social development, crime prevention through environmental design, community crime prevention, reduction of recidivism, and policing. In this essay, I will compare and contrast the dominant approaches used for crime prevention and analyze which approaches are most effective. I will identify and apply at least four approaches used in law enforcement, legislation, courts, corrections, family, and community within the crime prevention programs.
The ancient Olympic Games were a microcosm of Greek antiquity. With the Olympics being the biggest event in Greece at the time, the occasion brought many new ideas and showed what the traditions and customs of Greece were really about. Through this big spectacle people learned about their own culture and went through many experiences ranging from listening to poets and praying at the Temple of Zeus to spectating the sport of “Pankration”, a combination of boxing and wrestling. The Olympic Games were a sporting contest that are likely to have started in 776 BC.
