A statistic from World Health Organization indicates that 60% of deaths are caused by chronic diseases. This is related to the increase of affluence and sedentary lifestyle. If we continue living this lifestyle, it will be easier for us to get the diseases. In this fast pace lifestyle, we are always on the go. We usually choose to eat food without thinking much about the food content but just thinking about filling our stomach. Apart from food consumption factor, family history and polluted surroundings are also the major causes of the chronic diseases. However, there are some key chronic disease prevention steps we can take such as we should practice a healthy lifestyle, perform regular health check and reduce the risk factor from chronic disease. It seems that the prevention steps are common, but not many people know that the steps above can help us to stay healthy and reduce the risks of getting the diseases. Practice a healthy lifestyle is the most important step to prevent chronic disease, which means this step need to carry out as routine activity. For instance, we need to do regular physical activity at least 25 minutes per day as to make sure our weight is in balanced condition and the chances of developing chronic disease can be decrease. However, the physical activity is not only doing heavy exercise in the gym, but things like walking, housekeeping, gardening are also count as exercises that can give us a lot of benefit. Besides, to have well-balanced diets, there are three steps that can be done. Firstly, we should eat a variety of food from each level of the Food Guide Pyramid to ensure that we get all the nutrition for our body. Then, plan and prepare healthy meals before taking it. Since 1960 the age-adjusted mortality rates for cardiovascular disease (CVD) has declined steadily in the U.S. due to multiple factors, but still remains one of the primary causes of morbidity and premature mortality worldwide. Greater control of risk factors and improved treatments for cardiovascular disease has significantly contributed to this decline (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). In the U.S. alone it claims approximately 830,000 each year and accounts for 1/6 of all deaths under the age of 65 (Weiss and Lonnquist, 2011). Based on the 2007 mortality rate data an average of 1 death every 37 seconds is due to cardiovascular disease (Lloyd-Jones et al., 2009). Controlling and reducing risk factors is crucial for saving lives. There are a number of contributing risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which may appear in the form of hereditary, behavioral, and psychological, all of which ultimately converge in social or cultural factors.
Today, cardiovascular disease is “the number one killer in the United States and the developed world” (Sapolsky, 2004, p. 41). Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common form of cardiovascular disease, and is responsible for claiming an unreasonable amount of lives every year. CHD can begin to accumulate in young adults, but is prominently found in both men and women in their later adult lives. As a result of CHD, men typically experience heart attacks, whereas women present with chest pains, known as angina (Matthews, 2005).
Instead of waiting for a condition to arise in the human body, people should practice preventive care to maintain ideal health and prevent illnesses from occurring in the first place. Preventive care includes such things as immunizations and vaccines, routine physicals, regular medical checkups and periodic colonoscopies.
The expected hierarchy among health care providers is led by physicians. The doctor has long been the “expert” on anything to do with the human body, whether it is disease or injury. Physical activity, and making smart choices with how much you consume and what you consume can expand your lifespan. Being aware of your body composition can help identify your risk classification, and it can help plan a way to avoid diseases. Just like too much body fat can be harmful to health, having too little fat can also be crucial to a person’s health. What I am going to be talking about throughout my paper will be cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. I will be discussing what foods that would benefit and lessen your chance in getting these diseases. Also we will talk about the foods and other unhealthy choices that can increase your risk of getting these diseases. Eating healthy is what we need to teach our children and enforce it in your home. If we teach our children to start eating healthy at an early age then it could save them from having to struggle with getting these risk factors such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. We as parents need to instill good healthy eating habits for our children and make sure that our children are getting exercise of some sort on a daily basis. Adding exercise to your life will also lower your chances of becoming obese and having to worry about getting these risk factors.
