The Shakespeare play, The Taming of the Shrew, is romantic comedy written in the sixteenth entry. The play has been appropriated into many different films and musicals. Ten Things I hate about you, directed by Gil Junger, is a film, that the play has been transformed into. The film and play both use disguise as a comedic element. Both the play and film also have the main theme of money, gender roles and family relationships. The three main characters in the play and film, Katherine(Kat), Petruchio(Patrick) and Bianca(Bianca), have many similarities and differences. However Kate and Patrick's relationship is quite different to Katherine and Petruchio's relationship.
Both the play and the film use disguise as one of the main comedic elements. In The Taming of the Shrew, Lucentio is disguised as a Latin tutor in order to 'woo' Bianca, as he falls in love with her the moment he sees her. As Lucentio is disguised as a Latin tutor, there will be no Lucentio, but as Lucentio is an important man, people will notice if he's gone and will wander where he is. For this reason, Tranio, Lucentio's servant, disguises himself as Lucentio. Also, Hortensio is disguised as a music tutor, as he also falls in love with Bianca.
Similarly, in the film Ten Things I Hate About You, a few people are disguised, for love. Cameron, is disguised as a French tutor, as he, like Lucentio falls in love with Bianca Stratford the moment he sees her. Patrick Verona, is a mysterious character, who doesn't have a clear background. He is aggressive, smokes and drinks, but he is disguised as a man who doesn't. At first, he goes out with Kat in order to get money, but later falls in love with Kat.
Money, is one of the biggest themes in the play and the film Ten Things...

...is not a normal relationship. Katherine doesn't actually love Petruchio and neither does Petruchio. Petruchio only married Kate for the money and because he wants a challenge, to try to tame Katherine. Their relationship is only for the money, and to prove that Kate can change from being a shrew.
On the other hand, Kat and Patrick's relationship is true. At the start, their relationship was about the money, for Patrick. Soon they started falling for each other and fell in love. However, unlike Katherine and Petruchio, Kat and Patrick love each other truly. Their relationship is true. Their love is shown where Kate flashes to get Patrick out of detention. Also when Patrick sang "can't take my eyes off you" to Kat, in front of the cheerleading squad and embarrassed himself just for her. This shows they really care about each other and will do anything for each other.
