How a Christian May Follow the Call to Discipleship Through Daily Life and Work
The English word "vocation" comes from the Latin word vocare meaning
"to call". Every Christian has a calling or 'vocation' from God to be
good, to serve Him and to serve others. The term "disciple" is also
applied to every one who calls them selves a Christian.
"What am I going to do with my life?" or "What is God calling me to do
with my life?" We tend to think of the 'vocation' in terms of
religious life or priesthood when asking a general question about
'doing something'. Being a Christian is to be a disciple of Jesus and
every one of us has our own vocation from God. Christians are called
by God to use their wisdom to help Him and to help others as a part of
God's family. The calling of people to a life of holiness, to be
servants and witnesses of the Gospel is called a common vocation.
"As he was walking by the Lake of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon,
who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew; they were making a cast
into the lake with their net, for they were fishermen. And he said to
them, ' Come after me and I will make you fisher of people.' And at
once they left their nets and followed him."
(Matthew 4:18-20)
"Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee
and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee,
preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the
boat and their father and followed him.
(Matthew 4:21-22)
"As Jesus walked beside the Sea at Galilee, he saw Simon and his
brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

We each receive our own divine call from God. Sometimes this call alines with our own aspirations and goals, and other times it doesn’t. After the reading Gary Selby’s paper on Vocation I was left uncertain if my career goals and works were the same as God’s vocation for me. I have chosen to major in Sports Administration to pursue a career in the Lakers’ front office. This might also be God’s calling for me but, I’m at an uncertain moment in my life to know for certain if this is my ultimate calling.

When people are younger everyone always ask what do you want to be when you are older? Of course when it is children everyone is filled with wonder about their answer whether it’s a model, astronaut, race car driver, etc. Now that I’m older it’s expected for me to know exactly what to do with my life and how to do it. I realized very soon that I sometimes can be an indecisive person when it comes to life-long decisions. This being a huge decision in one’s life you could only imagine how many times I’ve changed my idea on what to go to school for. Although, changing my mind become a norm, I eventually decided a degree in business/marketing is the right path for me. What are my career and educational goals, what will my job would be like, and

Philosophy of Ministry: God's desires come first, I must always live my ministry God's way. I must live as a Christian (1 Corinthians 9:27) I must have a proper relationship of surrender to the Leader. In my personal life or in the Church I must understand that Christ is Head and Chief Shepherd (Ephesians 1:22, Hebrews 13:20). The “management” of Church is about relationships with God and Man, not just maintaining a social organization.
74). This is a question that I have asked myself many times over the last couple of years. I am exactly where I want to be right now, focusing on my children however I am beginning to look towards a future where they will be on their own, and I want to be ready to serve others as God desires. I love the words that “Life is not about toning down and repressing your God-given life force. It’s about channeling it and focusing it and turning it loose on something beautiful, something pure and true and good, something that connects you with God, with others, with the world” (Bell, 2012, p.
God is the focal point for spiritual gifts, talents, and training for leadership. The disciples were trained by Jesus. He did not take disciples into a classroom but He taught by examples.9 Many times the disciples were put in situations by Jesus to help them learn on-the-job. Even in missions, leaders cannot be prepared for every circumstance that may arise; however; with his talents, spiritual gifts, and the Holy Spirit, one can have the resources necessary to be successful. With one’s failures, spiritual gifts, and talents, the Holy Spirit will use these things to train leaders as they continue to aspire in
