Never believe in the word "too busy", because people can always make time for things they really value. In the Harvard Business review article, “How Will You Measure Your Life?” Dr. Clayton M. Christensen claims it is important to "Create a Strategy for Your Life.” This can help us to answer his question, “How can I ensure that my relationship with my family proves to be an enduring source of happiness?” Family is a significant institution because it is a group of people who always support, protect, and comfort you when no one else does. So, it is necessary to create a healthy relationship with family along with productivity at work. Work and life balance is a concept of dividing appropriate time and energy between work and other important …show more content…
Boundaries are like the rules you have to follow every day. To create the boundaries, you should learn to strict with the time. There will always be another work to finish or another customer’s email to reply, but you should learn to stop at the proper time and follow your own rules. By doing it daily as a routine, you will find out you still have a lot of time to do many other things in your personal life. In this case, using social networks appropriately also helps you to follow your boundaries. For many people, turning off cellphone may be the hardest thing to do, but once you can do it, you will experience many things. You will see some problems clearly from the outside and also have more time to build good relationship with …show more content…
Setting priorities will let you having more time to do other things. Creating boundaries will help you to strict with your plan, and identifying your needs will make others understand you clearer and help you to balance your time. Nowadays, there are several people still think balancing career and personal life is impossible. However, the main idea to achieve this goal is just about “do more with less.” If you cannot maintain your lasting relationship, you can be sure that you will always struggle to be happy in
Previous generations have a strong belief of keeping work and home life separate; that work is for work and home is for play (Rampell, 2011, para 21). Today’s professionals do not seem to abide by similar beliefs, constantly crossing the borders of one into the other. While many recognize this as an issue that could result in employees being less productive, it has actually resulted in them accepting that their work may run late into the evening or even into the weekend. I agree with this completely in that I grew up being taught that business is business and personal is personal; you leave your home life at the door. But now times have changed, and my weekends are no longer dedicated to my home life, but for work, because I attend classes during the week. Also, in my line of work in the Allied Health industry, it is a requirement to work off hours. Long gone are the days of working nine to five, Monday through Friday; technology and the demand of wanting affairs done and done as soon as possible, has made it so the “work week” is now 24-7. “Jon Della Volpe, the director of polling at Harvard Institute of Politics, said, ‘Some experts also believe that today’s young people are better at quickly switching from one task to another, given their exposure to so many stimuli during their childhood and adolescence’” (Rampbell,
Is there ever a point where you can be too busy? In Barbara Ehrenreich’s essay The Cult of Busyness, she writes around her experiences she has with an acquaintance of hers that was busy from sun up to sun down. Throughout the essay, Barbara tends to have a sarcastic, this is evidenced when she says, “... and whose schedule doesn’t allow for a sexual encounter lasting more than 12 minutes.” As I read this essay I found that I could connect a bunch of what she was saying to my life and the world we live in today.
An untold amount of people tear apart at the seams because the tension is too much. The rest of the people have different versions of the same problem. People try to juggle work and family, but find themselves in a state of confusion where priorities become blurred. Is getting a high salary more important than having dinner with family?
“Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.” said John F. Kennedy. Most people today have less concern about the purpose of lives. This lead to the the three questions which set by Dr. Clayton M. Christensen in July 2010 on the article named “How Will You Measure Your Life?”. The first question is will you happy in your career?, Is family the source of happiness? and Will you stay out of jail?. All these questions help us to think more about our “lives”. In the article, Christensen divided the topic into six parts and all parts are essential. In my point of view, I found that the most interesting topic is “Create a Strategy for Your Life.” because the clear purpose helps us to identify the meaning of life, create success and stop wasting time.
The measure of one's life is in his or her deeds. The life of Whittier Crocket Witherspoon has been remarkable in its scope of accomplishment and influence. He's been an educator, a school principal and teacher and a political leader who's met with presidents and the political elite of our country.
It may seem impossible to juggle many things in life at one time; such as trying to get all the assignments completed, and studying done in a short amount of time to make it to work on time. If that was not stressful enough there is also the pressure of making sure to spend time with family. It can be extra stressful when someone has a very big and close family, and a variety of events are to be attended, making sure assignment are completed in order to join the family. Sometimes it may seem that there is simply not enough time in a day to balance school, work, and family which requires a lot of effort, this can seem like a very daunting task because no one ever wants to fail, it is difficult trying to please everyone, and there seems to
Sometimes in life you need some type of reassurance that something is ok. What I mean by that sometimes you might think an action is wrong or selfish maybe because of what you was always told but in reality that action was the best option for you. Reading the book “Take Time for Your Life” by Cheryl Richardson will teach you all of that. Honestly this is my first self-help book that I have ever read. In my opinion people should read these helpful books more often but in order to take information in you have to be open-minded. Take Time for Your Life contains a lot of useful information in it. What stood out to me was when she stated in the chapter what can coaching do for you “If you think "selfish" is a dirty word, learn to practice extreme self-care--put yourself at the
When the U.S. is compared to the conditions of other workers in other countries the numbers come as quite a shock. According to the magazine Psychology Today, “The United States—one of the richest countries in the world--ranks 28th among advanced nations in the category of work-life balance, 9th from the bottom” (Cummins 1). This stressful imbalance of home life with excessive work hours has left us in desperate need of more time and is becoming a strong identifier of American culture in the world. As Cummins explains, “We log long hours at work with the fear of losing our jobs through downsizing hanging over our heads. Then we fight rush hour traffic to get home in time to be super-parents, putting dinner on the table, helping our kids with their homework, and checking in with friends and family members we feel we have neglected because we are so overwhelmed” (Cummins 1). This well pa...
On any given day, my time regardless of how planned it is by making lists can be thrown off track due to usually a sick child/pet. No matter how hard I try, I know my kids will get sick and they will expect me to take care of. Since I cannot usually control when that will happen, it’s important that I take advantage of what I can control, such looking ahead at assignments that will need my attention to plan adequate time to complete assignments a head of time, instead of waiting till the last minute. When I know what to expect I can make plans. Another
I find myself putting too much energy into each individual I meet and sometimes I have their problems affect my day life. To be able to overcome these boundary issues, I will establish clear boundaries with my client. Then after theses boundaries are established, I will make sure that after work I focus on needs that I have instead of my clients. These two strategies will allow me to keep my professional boundaries without offending my clients. My professional boundaries will be able to happen between my clients and myself if I am able to have my clients understand what they are and if I take care of
The problem of time management can be said to be universal not only affecting students but also other people in careers. This problem is seen to transition from a person’s life from different cadres of his or her engagement specifically from home, school and at work. It is also a problem that is internal and not external.
The notion of work-life balance has evolved greatly becoming ambiguous over time, along with the struggle of achieving it. It is important to realize that work-life balance can mean different things to different people. It can change and mean different things at various points in people’s careers. Work-life balance is the relative importance of work and personal life to a particular individual (work-life Balance, 2016) . With my own literal interpretation of the meaning behind this term, work-life balance is basically trying to find an equal level of work outside life. It is about having a perfectly-optimal career along with a perfectly-optimal life. But with close introspection you come to realize that work
There are many different parts to time management, such as procrastination, strategy, organization, expectations and being prepared. All of them contribute equally in many ways. All of the things that we have spoken about in this paper are highly recommended. The best thing to do when it comes to time management is to set a strategy, become organized and do your best to avoid procrastination. We all spend a large portion of our week at work and sometimes that amount of time can skew our priorities. However, at the end of the day it is family that is really important. Early in my career the perception was that in order to get ahead you had to be the person putting in the most hours. I would often come in early and stay late to show my commitment. However, over time this perception has changed and I have found that it is not true that putting in the most hours makes you the best employee. The birth of my son six years ago really changed my perceptions and priorities. When my husband and I were both focused on our careers it was easy to get in the pattern of working long hours, but once you have a child at home you have a very good reason to not spend every waking hour working. I have discovered the true importance of work life balance and contrary to my old beliefs I think it has actually made me a better employee. I am motivated to do my best when I am at work, while working very efficiently and with a purpose. I am much happier in general with the balance and my family is also happy. This value will continue to be of great importance to me for the remainder of my career. I think it also makes me a more compassionate and empathetic leader and my employees respect my values and want to also do their best while they are at
