For my International Studies Internship, I spent from September-December at the Office of Education Abroad at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. During my duration at the internship my official position was the role of Public Relations and Student Outreach. My advisor for this job was Beth Lorenz who is one of the main advisors of Education Abroad at UNCC. I was very excited at the prospect of working at this office when I saw the flyer advertising the position. As someone who had just retuned from my own education abroad trip that summer, I was energetic and passionate to encourage other students to partake in something that had been such a huge influence on me. Every week my average schedule was about 10 hours, however I often worked over these required 10 hours in order to reach the hours required to receive a 3-hour International studies course credit. The Study Abroad Fair encourages students to come out and see for themselves the endless opportunities, universities, and programs around the world that UNC Charlotte offers to them. We have several tables set up with representatives from these programs and schools to talk to students first hand. Along with the opportunity to talk to these organizations, the Office of Education Abroad also offers chances to win scholarships and prizes by coming to this event. They are also involved in other international promoting events like International Festival, which is a tradition on the campus that showcases the multitude of countries represented here at Charlotte. Food and different themed items are sold and allows for the community to appreciate the differences there are between us. Tri-S (Study, Serve, Share) is an office on campus dedicated to helping students participate in trips. Incredible! It is such a need on campus that there is a whole office devoted to cultural learning. Every year, Tri-S groups travel out of the country. Furthermore, twenty-five percent of Anderson’s undergraduate population chooses to go on a Tri-S trip each year (Donna Sharp). “Through programs like Tri-S and study abroad, students have the opportunity to actively engage with other cultures; to “cross borders and connect worlds,” if you will” (Ryan Grondahl). Tri-S trips are not the only cultural learning form. Anderson students also have the chance to study abroad. For the past two summers, I worked as a student ambassador for the Summer Immersion Program (SIP). I found out about SIP through my prep school’s (Sandy Spring Friends School) international department. My responsibilities included organizing activities for 100 international summer students with my fellow student ambassadors. I also gave tours through the Washington D.C, Baltimore, NYC, and Philadelphia areas. On the trips, I was responsible for 15-20 kids as I lead them through the big cities and explained anything that they misunderstand. I took students’ attendance on and off the bus. This incredible experience has profoundly influenced my decision to pursue a business degree which would allow me to pick up where I left off last summer; working with SIP as a business leader.
For my externship I worked at Heshima, a center takeing care of physically and mentally challenged children, for 20 hours. The highlights of my experience were; successfully getting into the organization blindly, being able to work alongside the Heshima employees and watching Nelly, the headmistress’s way of doing things. She, being the head of the school used a method of leadership I had not seen before.
For my co-op assignment I worked for the Clark College Foundation as a Prospect Research/Database Intern. When I first entered the foundation I was unsure of how I would fit into the organization. This would be the first time I had ever worked in an office environment and I had no idea what would be expected of me and if I would be able to perform the job that I had been hired for.
A couple of weeks ago, the class was assigned a personal narrative essay and the prompt was to tell an interesting story of a specific experience that changed how you acted, thought, or felt. To be honest, I was awfully excited to write this essay because talking about myself is the easiest thing to write about sometimes. However, deciding what experience to talk about was challenging because I have already experienced so much in my seventeen years of being alive from dislocating my hip when I was three, to seeing my grandfather die in front of my eyes, from almost tripping off of the trail on the Grand Canyon, to meeting band members at an airport. Personal narratives allow you to share your life with others and vicariously experience the things that happen around you. Your job as a writer is to put the reader in the midst of the action letting him or her live through an experience. Although a great deal of writing has a thesis, stories are different. A good story creates a dramatic effect, makes us laugh, gives us pleasurable fright, and/or gets us on the edge of our seats. A story has done its job if we can say, "Yes, that captures what living with my father feels like," or "Yes, that’s what being cut from the football team felt like."
A narrative is a story. In writing a narrative essay, you share with the reader some personal experience of your own in order to make a point or convey a message. You may choose to tell how your grandfather influenced your desire to become an orthodontist, or perhaps you’ll relate the story of the time you didn’t make the cut for the basketball team. Whatever story you tell, your purpose is to share with others some experience that has taught you something or changed you somehow.
When I come back from study abroad I want to promote the experience with everyone. If anyone asks me about my program or my host country I will gladly answer any questions they might have. I would want to participate in the Study Abroad Fair and represent the program I was apart of. Since I took an internship I will have experience getting a VISA and have an understanding of how my host university’s program works. I can be an advisor for students looking for any guidance on their journey to St. Mary’s. My experience could easily be presented for anyone looking into my program and I could provide information on the best ways to budget yourself while in London. My summer internship placement was Arise for Social Justice in Springfield Massachusetts for 10 weeks. I worked on anything the office needed, including answering phones, making copies, organizing food donations, and things I was not aware of I would take on addressing a lack of transparency the organization was lacking. My original hope was to work on environmental issues in the city primarily, however the issues I worked on the most were post environmental disaster relief. When I was notified I attended public hearings and community meetings later in the evening around other issues I am focusing part of my thesis cap stone project for the Honors College.
My internship experience this semester was interesting. I interned at ESH/MESH with Bridgeway. My Supervisor was Emilie Banz. I didn’t do much but I did learn a lot from this experience. I met a lot of great people and watch PsyR in action. I met a couple of individuals who were really cool. My experience this semester has prepared me for the next.
