I’ve retired from the military with one particular mindset and way of doing things. A lot of that mindset was positive, especially in today’s civilian world. Much of my military attitude will serve me well, but there was one bad habit, which was a stumbling block for me when I initially transitioned to civilian employment. I struggled with overcoming my use foul language.
The internal culture of the military normalizes swearing; however, outside the service cursing will cause you problems. It’s a habit that you can break by immersing yourself in “proper” speech. The issue is one of mindset and perception. In my mind, anyone who can’t control his or her language ends up being seen as an undisciplined or unprofessional. It’s an appearance thing
Do you know what Tourette's Syndrome is? Many people think Tourette’s is when a person swears frequently and uncontrollably. That is called coprolalia, which can be a symptom of Tourette’s but often isn't the most common one. Tourette’s is much more than swearing. The media has shed a light on Tourette's, but maybe not the correct light. While Tourette’s is displayed as playful or inappropriate, it’s far from a laughing matter.
Earlier in March 2014 the senior leadership of the Air Force, to include the Secretary of the Air Force, the Chief of Staff, and the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, made a statement to all airmen. They stated that “being an Airman is more than a job, when we voluntarily raised our right hands and took an oath to support and defend the Constitution, we became members of the profession of arms”, they also said that along with our profession of arms we are given and accept a sacred trust given to us by the American people, that to be worthy of this trust we must “build our lives and shape our service on the foundation of our core values”, and that when Airmen fail to live up to our core values, the reputation of all who serve is tarnished” (letter to airman, Mar 2014). Recently, I was tasked to deliver a briefing for the J3 monthly training day. This tasking was a result of my negligence in updating a certain system that is vital to the J3 watch floor. My briefing, although filled with correct information and guidance, was also slaked with profanity and unprofessional gestures. Regardless of any circumstances that may have been the cause for these actions, the actions needed correction. Correction was given, which was responded to by more profanity and provoking actions. After I showed such disrespect to my non-commissioned officer in charge, he escorted me to my supervisor and my actions were made known to him. During this time I was still acting very contentious and disrespectful, making snide comments and standing with such contempt as if to say “are you done now”. This of course escalated into more serious action by my leadership which very well could have been avoided had I done my duty correctly in the first place. The...
There are words heard with either a positive or negative connotation. These positive and negative connotations that are placed with certain words are made up of the society in which we live in. An example of a word that can be used as a positive word or a negative word would be the word 'please.' For someone using the word 'please' depending on the tone the speaker using the word and if there is a pause before or after the word, it may be heard with a negative connotation such as annoyance, or with a positive connotation as a sort of thanks and appreciation. When using a word that doesn't have a definition that’s defined by hatred and offends it offends the person hearing the word you can really never be rebuked for what you said but how you
It is key to have a good discipline in the army because without discipline we wouldn 't be able to complete our missions successfully or any
The point I’m trying to get out of this is disrespect in the military is a big thing, especially dealing or being disrespectful to a Non Commissioned Officer. Disrespect doesn’t only have to be with Non Commissioned Officers, it can be with Commissioned Officers, Warrant Officers, and Senior Non Commissioned Officers such as (Sergeant First Class, Master Sergeants, Sergeant Majors, and sometimes seasoned Staff Sergeants). It can also be to your peers alike. Treat people how you would like to be treated. As my momma always said “If you don’t got nothing good to say then don’t say anything at
How can I ever forget a time when I said a swear word in front of my mom. I was at the grocery store shopping with my mom and cousin. I was already upset because I got in trouble at home already. My cousin just kept messing with me and making fun of me and I just told her to “shut the fuck up.” Don’t you just hate those nagging little cousins that laugh at everything? I tried to say it as low as possible but my mom has ears like a hawk. Man I swear I never got slapped so hard a day in my life. From that day forward I swore that I wouldn’t say any swear words ever. Do you ever wonder where swearing words originated from? Or even people views on how they feel about them? Barbara Lawrence has an issue with swearing words because people use different terminology such as: “Broad”, “chick”, “piece of tail” and other sorts of harmful words to downgrade women. Bill Bryson on the other hand says that swear words are merely considered bad because they are considered bad. A similarity that both Lawrence and Bryson have is when they mentioned the word “ficken”, which is a German or Latin word meaning f***. The difference between the two are that Bryson explains the different words the Romans created and used over 1,500 years ago and Lawrence explains that some
First of all, you wouldn’t want to curse at someone, sometimes the person may react back in a violent manners. I experience a lot of fight for just cursing and or disrespecting. I think triggering someone in a violent manner can result you to be either get beaten down or something worse. All in all, I think everyone should be respecting others.

Profanity is often thrown around like it is nothing, but it can ruin a lot of things for people who use it on a regular basis. Christians are an example of people who do not like profanity. It is a sin to curse and Christians take profanity seriously. So many people use profanity so much that they do not even realize that they are using it. Some people think that it is “cool” to cuss and use foul language, those people throw bad words around like it is nothing. The lesson that profanity teaches is that using bad language can make people frown upon you and will not get you far in
After reading the story 'The Power of Profanity' by Scott Weaver my view on profanity and its use of vulgarity has changed dramatically. It wasn't till I was about 18 years of age that I started speaking with profanity. And even after using cuss words such as the B word I would constantly regret my use of language always thought that these words should be absent in my use of language. It was ingrained in me by my mother just like Scott Weaver what's top by her grandmother that "Only stupid people cuss. It's because they can't think of any way else to say what they want to say."
Military Discipline is a state of order and obedience existing within a command. Self discipline in the military is where soldiers do the 4 rights without being told, even in the absence of the commander. Discipline is created within a unit by instilling a sense of confidence and responsibility in each individual. To strengthen discipline, senior leaders need to give praise to their subordinates, either individually or as a whole, for tasks done well. By doing this, it will accomplish every commanders goal of having a unit that functions well and builds a bond which binds together the team. Everything in life requires some sort of discipline. Whether it is hitting a baseball, learning to sew , playing a musical instrument, making good grades or brushing your teeth it all comes down to a matter of discipline.
Profane language describes a vulgar behavior that is intensely offensive because it shows lack of respect. Profanity mainly arises in tv shows, movies, and books. It is a shocking that even books use profanity because books are usually suppose to be educational that teaches good behavior. However, a majority of people believe the use of profanity in books is acceptable. When these type of books are exposed to high school students, many parents complain about it their children learning profane language through books. Parents complain about these books teaching their child amateurish words because they do not want their children to learn these words and get influenced by these devastating words. These words promote negativity within students
Lack of discipline starts by letting a Soldier off, or slide on what would be a minor infraction
That is just respecting what he says and get along with it. That is more important than anything. When I had a job I had to respect my co-workers, manager, and customers. Not anyone wants a disrespectful person. Being disrespectful is not showing respect for myself. I am a young lady now but my mother taught me with having respect for myself when I was just a little girl. My mother showed me how to cross my legs while sitting. Also, she told me I should not chew with my mouth open and not to ever use profanity. How I should not just wear all types of clothes wear my breast is hanging out or wearing too little shorts. It is hard to teach yourself with respect if you never had a role model or figure to teach him or her
