I watched from the bench as one of my teammates chucked up a deep three pointer. Clunk! The ball bounced hard off the back of the rim and fell directly into the large hands of a Central Catholic player; a perfect way to sum up our night. My teammates in the game halfheartedly jogged back down the floor to attempt to get a stop against the steamrolling Central Catholic offense. The now large Central Catholic student section awaiting the varsity game began to cheer noisily as their team sprinted down the floor. With time winding down in the fourth quarter, a Central Catholic player came hard off of a screen, finding an open three-point shot from the corner; a spot he was far too used to seeing in the game. The ball soared through the air, landing in the hoop with a swish. The crowd immediately erupted with cheer. I looked up at the scoreboard and my heart sunk at the sight of the home team’s score: 100. The buzzer soon followed, signalling the end of the game and the two teams marched off the floor, one grinning with pride and the other slouched over in defeat. The announcer spoke enthusiastically over the roaring crowd, …show more content…
My JV basketball team had just given up one hundred points to our rival, Central Catholic, in what was an embarrassing defeat for our proud and prestigious program, and I was dreading the post game speech we were about to receive from a coach who had been a part of that program for over 30 years, and I could tell that my teammates felt the same way. Coach Hampton did not hesitate to howl at his players when he needed to, and we expected nothing less from
In John Feinstein’s Foul Trouble, Danny, a basketball player, experiences the tough NCAA restrictions. Terell and Danny were on their way to the most elite showcase basketball camp in the country. They arrive at the camp and make their way inside. All kinds of diverse reporters and television hosts swarmed Terrell. Danny was feeling as if he does not belong there. He walked into the building and sat on the bleachers. The whole place was teeming with college coaches. Danny could not wait to start the camp games. Coach Wilcox, Danny’s father, was also very eager.
Joes High School’s total enrollment consisted of sixteen girls, and twenty boys. Ten of the boys that had enrolled there played basketball. All of the boys were over six feet tall. Lane Sullivan, the new coach of the basketball team, had never even touched a basketball before he started coaching. Sullivan had never coached anything at all before he started coaching the Joes basketball team. In order to gain knowledge about the sport, he got a book about it. He started coaching in 1927, but before the 1928 basketball season, Joes High School didn’t even have a gym. Instead, they’d practice outside on a dirt court, and two times a week they’d take a bus to the nearest gym, which was ten miles away. In order to play home games, the boys had to play in the local dance hall. The “court” was nowhere near regulation size, and the ceiling was so short that the boys couldn’t shoot an arched shot. The people who attended these basketball games had no place to sit and watch the game, the all stood around the edges of the court and on the small stage. Joes High School finally got their own gym around Christmas time because the people of Joes donated their time and material in order to make it happen.
The first personal traits that Coach Dale was forced to exhibit were his toughness and his assertiveness. On his first night in Hickory he met the men of town in the barbershop who were all willing to provide their experience and insight on the team and how to coach. Coach Dale had enough self confidence to know that none of these “insights” were going to help the Hickory team win basketball games and let them know they weren’t welcome by turning his back and walking out. Additionally, he was forced to demonstrate his toughness twice more on the first day of practice by telling the temporary coach, “Secondly, your days of coaching are over,” and then by standing up to the group of men after he dismissed Buddy from the team. These actions made no friends of the men; however, th...
The author of “Sports’ Bully Culture” John Amaechi, throughout his essay focuses on the bully that very few consider, the coach. He presents an example that most, parents in particular, have heard about; Mike Rice, the former coach at Rutgers University’s. Amaechi recognizes that he can agree with the end result but he also recognizes the need for a different approach and continues to share his view. Amaechi then shares his own personal experience with this kind of bully when he was in university. Even though what he says appeals to many, some coaches, disagree with Amaechi view. He continues to show that these coaches are not just a select few, and the result of these coaches is severe. The essays purpose is to change the audience’s perspective
Recently, I watched my husband, who is neither a fan of UNC or Duke, become anxious over a major upset between UNC and Duke. UNC was leading at half-time; with a 16 point lead and it had been several minutes since Duke scored a basket. However, something that Coach K said to his team in the locker room during half time changed the dynamic of the game. Finally the game ended with Duke beating UNC by a 6 point lead.
“Be more concerned with you character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” These words of John Wooden are just a few out of many wise quotes millions of people, not just athletes, are inspired by today and likely will continue to be inspired by for a very long time. Basketball fans and experts consider John Wooden as one of, if not, the greatest coaches of all time. Much of his success is a result of his beliefs and coaching system. Knowing the background of Coach Wooden’s playing and coaching career plays a significant role in understanding how he practiced his beliefs with his teams and how his philosophy and success intertwined to set a precedent for the remainder of collegiate basketball.
Going to a Carolina Panthers football game and it was great! I used sight, hearing, smelling, feeling, and tasting when I went. Out of all the NFL games I have been to, this was by far my favorite. There was so much to do when I went there.

College is a time for young people to develop and grow not only in their education, but social aspects as well. One of the biggest social scenes found around college campuses are athletic events, but where would these college sports be without their dedicated athletes? Student athletes get a lot of praise for their achievements on the field, but tend to disregard the work they accomplish in the classroom. Living in a college environment as a student athlete has a great deal of advantages as well as disadvantages that affect education and anti-intellectualism.
Student athletes live very busy lives. A typical school day runs from 8:00-2:30, add in a two- hour practice or game, score a part time job, dive into some family time, a grand slam of homework and catch a little bit of sleep. Students are more stressed due to the many activities they are a part of. This issue affects a lot of people not only in this school district, but most other high schools throughout the country. All student athletes exercise more than other children who are not involved in an extracurricular sport. In school athletics, the players are called “student athletes” meaning that school activities come first. There are strict rules for student athletes, not only on the field but in the classroom as well. In physical education

If I had known what was about to occur on this fateful day, I would not have run my mouth off nearly as much as I did. A full court, five on five basketball game had just gotten under way. Since I was voiceless because of my size and age I did not get selected to partake in this game. This was nothing new to me for I had always been ignored when it came to selecting squads. However, when the game would commence, my voice would be heard loudly and proudly. I would become the biggest trash talker on the court.
