According to a TIME Mobility poll, 84% of people cannot spend more than one day without their phones. Some people may come to the conclusion that people are addicted to screens and today’s technology has gone too far. However, I argue that technology has not gone too far and that people simply use their devices every day because they provide us with everyday needs such as being able to contact people and having access to information such as the news and an upcoming weather forecast. In this article by the New York Post, Nicholas Kardaras tells a story of a mother, Susan, and her personal experience with screens regarding her son, John. When John was just six years old, Susan decided to buy him his own iPad. John then went on to discover the joys of Minecraft and soon became addicted to the virtual cube world. Susan recalls walking in on John playing Minecraft in his bed late one night when he was supposed to be asleep. People who own screen devices are able to share and receive information easier than ever before. We can contact emergency services in the case of an emergency, we can find answers to almost any question imaginable, we are able to communicate across the world in a matter of seconds, we can find directions to places if we get lost, we can look at weather forecasts ,we can save lives and much more. To make the claim that technology has gone too far just because some people get addicted is not only absurd, but completely false. Scientists still work everyday to make technological advancements to better people’s everyday lives. One story is about a man in Haiti who used an iPhone app to save his life. After the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, a story started circulating about a man who was trapped underneath rubble. The man, Dan Woolley, used an app from The American Heart Association to learn how to treat himself. “I had an app that had pre-downloaded all this information about treating wounds. So I looked up excessive bleeding and I looked up compound fracture”, he said. Woolley was able to stop the bleeding, preventing himself from going into shock, and he set an alarm on his phone every 20 minutes to keep him awake. Doctors say that if Dan Woolley were not have been able to treat himself, he would have died in the rubble.
