Did you know that softball was invented by George Hancock in 1887? It was a big hit, soon everyone wanted to learn how to play. Softball is a version of baseball. The ball is 10-12 inches in circumference. Softball is considered a lady’s game because it’s typically played by girls. You play with a bat, ball, and a softball glove. Just like baseball there are 4 bases in the field. The game is called softball, but the ball itself is not soft in fact, it is harder than a baseball! In a game, there are usually 3-7 innings depending on the league.
The team that has the most runs at the end of the game wins. To score a run you must run around the bases and touch home plate. Two teams are required to play softball. In the infield, there are 6 players, one is pitcher, another is catcher, there is the first base man, second base man, short stop and third base man. In the outfield, there are 3-4 players. When you are up to bat, you are trying to hit the ball with the bat. When you hit it, you run to first base, if your safe you must continue to run around the bases when another player hits the ball.

There are 3 outs in a game and there are lots of ways to get out. When you hit the ball, you run to first base, but if the first base man has the ball and touches the plate before you touch it you are out. Another way to get out is if you are on base and your teammate hits a pop fly and you run and the other team catches it, you must get back to your base before they tag you or touch the base, otherwise you are out! If you get tagged by the ball and you are not on base you are also out. A force out is when you must run because one of your teammates is behind you, and the baseman tags the base before you, you’re
“You play like a girl!” used to be one of baseball’s classic insults. Not anymore. Softball diva Jennie Finch has made it cool to not only throw like a girl, but to run, field and hit like one, too. Not since Babe Ruth has a player dominated so completely from the pitching rubber and the batter’s box, and she even gives the Bambino a run for his money in the charisma department. Jennie has also accomplished something Ruth never could: She is showing the boys it’s okay to be one of the girls. This is her story…
For people that don’t know how play softball here is how you play.there are two teams of 9 players or more at a maximum of probably a max of 15-16 players. They are trying to score more runs than the opposing team rounding bases and home plate as many times as possible. The batting team bats until the fielding team makes 3 outs on the other
Though the practices performed within softball literacy do not immediately seem as if they should be considered a literacy practice, according to two of the six propositions about the nature of literacy, it is. Not only does it involve the physical performance from a play, but also includes formal writings, new rules and regulations, and offer different rules in different countries. I think softball should be counted as a literacy practice because it appeals to Barton and Hamilton’s propositions and includes artifacts that make it a community and artifacts that provide the players with essential people skills.
Later in the century, the first women’s softball team was formed in 1895 at Chicago’s West Division High School. The team did not receive a coach for competitive play until 1899. At that time it was very difficult to develop interest among fans. About five years later women’s softball received more attention when “The Spalding Indoor Baseball Guide devoted a large section of the guide to the game of women’s softball (Cohen 52).” In 1933, the Chicago National Tournament also advanced the sport. At this competition, the male and female champions were honored equally. Also in 1933, “the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) was founded to govern and promote softball in the United States (World Book).” The ASA set up a committee that established one set of rules now used by teams in all parts of the world.
The rules of baseball and softball are extremely complex, so only the basics are necessary to distinguish the sports. In both sports the primary rule is to advance the runner around the bases to home plate when the ball is hit. In baseball stealing the bases is another way to advance the runner, but this is not permitted in softball because the ball must be hit before a runner can leave the base. Baseball requires nine innings to complete a game, and softball only requires seven. The softball player is out if the last hit is a foul ball, while the baseball player stays at the plate until another strike is called or hits successfully. As one can see, a player that switches games must familiarize himself with the difference in the rules to succeed.
A team of players usually ranges from ten to forty players depending on how many people join the squad. The field consists of nine players on defense, as well as one batter at the plate playing offense. Of those nine players on the field, three play deep in the outfield (right, left, and center) who look to catch a ball hit in the air and get it back to the infield as quickly and efficiently as possible; if the ball drops then their goal is to hurry to the ball and get it back to the infield as quickly and efficiently as possible before the runner (after the ball is hit and the player gets on base because the ball wasn’t caught in the air, his title changes from a batter/hitter into a runner) advances to the next base.
“Batter up!” the umpire yelled from behind home plate on the diamond-shaped field for the inning to begin. Adrenaline rushed through the players’ veins as the crowd cheering echoed from the bleachers to the outfield. Softball and baseball are team sports which both require an umpire and a diamond shaped field. All players are important. Most aspects of the games are the same. Each team has only nine players on the field at nine different positions. Each inning ends when there are three outs. Baseball generally consists of nine innings, whereas softball usually is played in seven innings. People think that softball is not as tough as baseball because they think that softball is a soft sport. I have been playing softball for about ten years, but prior to that I played baseball. However, the game of softball is on a whole different level. Softball plays require much more speed, and there is a greater possibility of getting injured. The game of softball is more hazardous and fast-paced than baseball.
Now if you're anything like me, you know that when you start a sport for the first time. You have questions like my first question, “what in the world is softball”. Well now that I am a”softball”player I can tell you all there is to know about softball. Softball is a game between two teams with two sections to the field in field and outfield. There is the pitcher, the catcher, 1st,2nd,and3rd baseman, shortstop, and left, right, and center field.
Texas Tech has proven that hitting a softball is way harder to hit than a baseball. A softball pitcher is very close to you at the pitcher's mound. If you are in the batter's box it feels like they are right on top of you especially since most softball pitchers can be up to about 6 feet in height. It is scientifically proven that a softball player has less time to react to the ball because of the distance and speed of the pitch. Also, softball pitchers not only throw hard, but they also throw tricky pitches to hit. The pitch that rises upwards is called a rise ball. When this pitch comes in, most coaches will say just let it go instead of risking this pitch. Baseball players throw breaking balls, but unlike in softball they don't suddenly leap up right as you're going to swing at it. Pitchers in softball can also throw a curve ball that curves away from the batter but still in the strike zone. A screw ball moves closer to the batter. Same as a curve ball it is still in the strike zone just right on the edge of it. Softball players throw many more change ups than in baseball. Change ups catch the player off guard causing them to swing and become frustrated with themselves. As you can tell softball pitchers don't mess around using every inch of the plate to pitch the ball and strike the batter
The first thing that you have to do in your wind up is to step back with your right foot behind the rubber. Second you have to swing you right foot up and balance on your left foot. Finally you have to push your left foot off of the mound while balancing and throw the ball towards the plate. After you throw the ball you have to be in a fielder’s position in case the ball is thrown hit back at you.
Like many sports the rules of softball have changed threw out history. Anyone who plays softball knows mother nature has a huge role in the game. We play outside on a field so rain, lightning, and thunder don't always get along with the game schedule. When softball was first thought of this was not a problem as the game was played inside. It was originally used for baseball players to
Baseball is a very well known sport and often known as “America’s pastime” and softball is highly similar, but with a few key differences. Many people just assume that the sport of baseball is more difficult than softball, but don’t actually know the specific parts of each of the two. Also, if you’ve never played one or the other sport, you shouldn’t be assuming anything at all in the first place. Although many assume one may be harder than the other, baseball and softball both have particular factors which make them both complex in their own way.
Softball was just a hobby for many people until the ASA (American Softball Association) decided to change that. The ASA wanted to recognize softball as a competitive sport worldwide and be a part of the Olympic program. The ASA would continue to be a hard working organization through the ups and downs of the sport of softball. (“USA Softball”). The IOC (International Olympic Committee) would eventually help the ASA overcome its biggest obstacle and give softball its big break (“USA Softball”). The ASA would later find out the success of the U.S. team might also cripple their big break as well. The involvement of the U.S. has led to the controversy of softball being an Olympic game.
As Paige and I walked across the field towards our team I felt euphoric. Four long years of work, sweat, and dedication had led up to this night. It was the perfect end to my senior year of softball. The scoreboard just beyond the mass of sweaty, screaming softball players read 15-0. This was the final score of the district championship game, a game my team had never won before. The applause and cheers of the fans echoed in my ears for hours afterward
Softball is full of mathematics from the pitch of the ball to the angle of fielding the ball. When you think about sports, I’m sure that math isn’t the first thing you think of, but maybe it should be because in order to succeed in most sports, you need to know the mathematics behind it. Softball for example, you need to use math all the time whether you know it or not. Obviously you aren’t setting up an equation in your head or drawing it out in the dirt, but a lot of it has to do with angles and distances. When you are fielding the ball on the ground or even attempting to catch a ball in the air you need to make sure that you have the right angle at the ball so you can field (catch) it correctly or make sure that it stays in front of you.
