Is Executing innocent people acceptably low?
The death penalty subject itself is a controversial issue that incites a lot of mixed feelings. Often when I have discussions on the subject the most common statement made is that the punishment should fit the crime. What if the person convicted did not commit this crime and is actually innocent? We as a society should not find this to be an acceptable practice, but many feel that the number of innocent executed is low enough to justify the continued practice of the death penalty. In this essay we will explore both sides of the issue and I will explain why I feel that it is unacceptable to execute innocent or potentially innocent individuals.

These incarcerations leave individuals vulnerable to the system and have them waiting at deaths door. These individuals often seek and receive aid from non-profit organizations such as The Innocence Project. Founded in 1992 this organization exonerates the wrongly convicted through DNA testing. They have exonerated 354 individuals by DNA who served an average of 14 years in prison before exoneration (Exonerate the Innocent). That’s an amazing number of people that were wrongfully incarcerated, but at the least these individuals were able to get help and salvation. What about those individuals who were placed on death row and then executed? The justice system should not risk the lives of the innocent; there is no justice or restitution for those executed by mistake. According to a study by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 1 in 25 sentenced to death and executed have been innocent. We should not leave people’s lives to chance, if a mistake is made there is no way to rectify that mistake; a postmortem exoneration is not justice.
