Happiness varies from age to age. The most innocent form of happiness is found in children. They become happy about playing outdoors and spending time with their family. Happiness seems to change as people gradually age. Teenagers are typically happy from spending time with friends and being involved with their school. Adults are happy from relaxing. They have been active their whole life, so now, they enjoy their free time. All in all, though, true happiness is the inability to stop smiling. Cynthia Belmore, the author of, “17 Ways To Shed Negativity And Achieve Happiness”, states that the first step is to get to know yourself. I, on the other hand, believe it is important to know who you are, but not required for happiness, that is more of a self-satisfaction feeling. I have not had the opportunity to fully grasp who I am. Generally speaking, I know my interests and most of my skills, but I have not completely realized who I am, which is okay. Happiness is an emotion I am familiar with, despite the fact that I have not completely realized of my identity. The main reason I experience happiness is because of number 10 of Belmore’s list: “Accept your feelings.” No one is going to, realistically, be happy all the time. You have to accept your feelings of regret or disappointment. I would like to stress that accepting feelings of sadness and anger is not okay. Those feelings should be dealt with and resolved. Regret and disappointment, however, are typically emotions one has to let go. Holding grudges will not lead to happiness. It will inevitably lead to feelings of sadness and greed. The article, “10 Simple Ways To Achieve True Happiness,” mentions that you should know your worth and express gratitude (Lowthert). Thomas Szasz states in his writing, “happiness is an imaginary condition, formerly often attributed to the living to the dead, now attributed by adults to children and children to adults.” I do not agree that happiness is an imaginary state of mind. Happiness is scientifically proven to in fact be a real and natural feeling produced by the body, but it is up to your brain to make you feel it. When you are in a pleasing situation, your brain responds to the pleasing stimuli and releases endorphins that spread through your body, making you feel good. We just call this feeling happiness.
Before we look into specifics, we’ll examine the history and development of “happiness” as a philosophy. Of course, the emotion of happiness has always existed, but it began to be seriously contemplated around 2,500 years ago by philosophers like Confucius, Buddha, Socrates and Aristotle. Shortly after Buddha taught his followers his Noble Eight Fold Path (which we will talk about later), Aristotle was teaching that happiness is “dependent on the individual” (Aristotle).

This self questioning of our own happiness often only gives us a sense of despair, and this is because simply asking this question is a type of insecurity. It is a norm in society to be as happy as everyone else, so although the people around us may seek to help us out, they are laying on more pressure. If we were all to ignore the subject of happiness, us as a whole society could become a much happier society.

In the book, The How of Happiness, author and researcher Sonja Lyubomirsky sets her book apart from other self-awareness books by being the first to utilize empirical studies. She uses data gained through scientific method to provide support for her hypothesis. This hypothesis consists mainly of the idea that we have the ability to overcome genetic predisposition and circumstantial barriers to happiness by how we think and what we do. She emphasizes that being happier benefits ourselves, our family and our community. “The How of Happiness is science, and the happiness-increasing strategies that [she] and other social psychologists have developed are its key supporting players” (3).
Happiness is an inner state of well-being and fulfilment, and therefore it has to come from inside. Every individual has his or her own emotions and way of thinking and as a result of this no one can really say what happiness is and what happiness is not. However, universally, happiness is a by-product of a healthy attitude and viewpoint. Happiness exists in everyone whether they choose to acknowledge and believe it or not. It is not rare nor is it something only the elite have: everyone has it but not everyone recognizes it. Contentment is finding a light at the end of every dark tunnel and in order to experience this we must ignore the pessimism surrounding us and remind ourselves that happiness is not a materialistic object but a choice and frame of mind.

When people think of happiness, they think about having a good feeling inside. There are many types of happiness, which are expressed in many ways. By consistently following an assortment of important steps, you will develop a life pattern that is generally happy. Many people throughout history have attempted to find ways to become happier, and share the information with others. While there are occasionally things that should make a person unhappy, it is important to not allow unhappiness to become a lifelong pattern that destroys you mentally and physically. In addition, happy people tend to have more friends and success because they are fun to associate with.
