As the common teenager I had never heard of the ship Olympic. I had never thought about the Titanic other than the movie, and I had always seen the sinking of the Titanic as an accident that couldn’t have been prevented. But after researching this topic, the thought of this “accident” makes me sick to my stomach. In the eyes of many it wasn’t an accident and there were preventions they could have made. On of the more popular theories about what happened was that the Titanic and its older sister, the Olympic, were switched. The story behind the Olympic is simple. She had collided with the HMS Hawke. During the collision of the two ships the Olympic had two watertight compartments. A towboat had pulled the Olympic back to land. When White Star took the collision to court they received no money for the ship to be repaired. This was a huge devastation to White Star. This also pushed back the launch of the Titanic. Many people believe the Titanic became the largest insurance scandal in history. People believed that they had switched the ships, used some of the parts from the Titanic to make a quick fix to the Olympic, and set the Olympic out instead of the Titanic. …show more content…

When the ship had launched there had been a fire started in the sixth compartment. John Pierpont Morgan, one of the owners of the ship, had thought that the ship would get to New York in great timing and it could be put out when they arrived. But the captain, Edward John Smith, thought that they wouldn’t get there in time. His idea was to increase the speed during the night, so passengers wouldn’t notice the change. This explains the reasoning behind the high speeds even when they knew there was going to be high counts of icebergs. And despite the radars saying they were nearing a lot of icebergs were coming up, the Smith didn’t order to slow down. So they hit it head
