Everyone believes something different. Many people believe society has a large impact on today’s world. Many people believe you should read a book by its cover and not allow any underclassmen into your life due to their class in the world. While today many people are not punished for what they have done, in the olden day in age, everyone of everyone was punished for every crime that wasn’t allowed. Society has changed so much through the years, it has helped and also harmed our small and very large communities greatly. The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible, and Of Mice and Men are great ways to show how society has affected today’s day in age. The Scarlet Letter shows a great deal of hatred for a woman who proved herself of doing something wrong. The Scarlet Letters husband had left her for many years to tend to her own. She had no idea if he was alive or dead. The Scarlet Letter showed even though she was unaware where her husband was she still didn’t have the right to go out and have a baby with someone else. Even though the …show more content…
women took the blame, had public shaming, had to wear a stitched letter “A” to her shirt and was humiliated for the rest of her life she didn’t give in. This is to show even though there is a major problem there is always things that connect with that issue. The man of the baby finally admitted to be the father. He was such a high class ranked person he didn’t want to be shamed in front of everyone. The King’s Men had a lot of guilt for not telling anyone he was the father, he finally broke down and told. Just because someone doesn’t come right out and say something doesn’t mean society isn’t tearing them apart on the inside. The Crucible is another awesome way of showing how society shapes us today.
Unlike the Scarlet letter the Crucible was more of a dramatic book. In this book it showed how many people can “rub” off on others. This causes people to act like one another. In The Crucible, there was a lonely Black woman who thought she could talk to ghosts. A couple girls fell into this trap and eventually got caught. Instead of the girls admitting to what they had done, they lied and started a whole town issue. This caused many people to get in trouble and even die. Instead of taking the consequences the girls pawned the blame on other people, in today’s society we have a major problem with this. This happens everyday due to people not wanting to be adults and own up to what they have done. After the girls were found guilty to lying about everything the town went back to normal and no one ever talked about it again. Society errors are the worst things to fall
into. Of Mice and Men was a completely different book compared to the other two I’ve already talked about. Of Mice and Men had a man named Lennie and a man named George. Neither of the men had a very good life and worked for a living to get by. Both Lennie and George had very big plans for the rest of their lives together. Society however had a different plan for them. People believe if you’ve ever made a mistake in life, then your done for. Lennie nor George were very good at anything other than hard work and George were always tending for Lennie. Lennie wasn’t the brightest one of all people, but he could work like a dog. Lennie had everything a man could want to have other than smarts. Society chose to show, that Lennie would never make it on his own do to his disability. In the end Lennie nor George got their dream place or ever got off that old farm they had been working at, but they were happy. Both Lennie and George loved their plan and were always going to push for it. George ended up having to do what was best for Lennie. George killed Lennie due to the trouble Lennie had gotten himself into. George knew that was the best thing to do for the both of them. Society has been around for many years and will continue to get worse. Each and every person thinks and believes something different day by day. As society gets worse we all have to learn to adapt to the new things and keep moving forward. In The Crucible, The Scarlet Letter, and Of Mice or Men all the characters in these books moved forward in life and kept making things better day by day.
‘The Crucible’ is written about the witchcraft trials in Salem in 1692, it is a story full of many emotional themes, these are fear, redemption, hysteria and a choice between what is believed to be good and bad.
.... In The Scarlet Letter, Dimmsdale finally confesses at the end, but people still hold him in high regard. They look at him as a saintly member or society, even though he idly sat by and watched while Hester was ridiculed and shunned. These men have not only sullied the lives of Charlotte and Hester, they have also affected the lives of their daughters. Both Lucy and Pearl grow up not knowing their fathers. This demonstrates how one bad mistake can change the lives of many. What is unjust in both of these novels is the fact that the men, don't have to suffer as much as these destitute women do. Both women change by the end of the book, Hester, is only a mere outline of what she used to be, while Charlotte is not longer young and naive. The men, according to society, have done nothing wrong, and can continue to live their lives with only a guilty conscience.
In a study conducted by Andrew Dugan, it was discovered that there is a difference between what each gender sees as good and bad. Men were found to be more accepting of pornography and having affairs while married, while, in comparison, women were more accepting of having a child outside of marriage and homosexual relations (Dugan 1). There is an apparent division among the genders which is not innate. The primary aspect of people’s lives that assists in personal development is society. It is society that shapes morality among the genders, causing a blatant dissent between what each gender perceives as right and wrong. Society influences individuals with three main techniques: observation, interaction, and justification.
The Scarlet Letter is trying to get across to the readers that sin can have either a positive or negative result depending on how that person chooses to react to sin. As long as there is sin, people will react to it in different ways; some will hide it, some will embrace it, some will rot from it. But no matter how the sin is dealt with, it will always leave it's mark.
The Crucible by was based on an event the called the Salem witch trials. During this time girls were caught dancing in the forest and got caught and one of the girls did not wake up. Because of the people started to believe that there was witches in the town and in turn caused everyone in the village to turn on each other. No one who was on the side of the devil. Many people can be blamed for what happened but the person that I believe is the most to blame is Mary Warren. She is most to blame because she had the chance to make amends for your sins but instead she decided to lie. She betrayed those that trusted her all because she only for her own safety. Although there were many people to blame for the Salem witch trials Mary Warren is the
The scarlet letter discusses spiritual, moral issues, humiliation, guilt, shame, mistakes, and so much more. the main theme in the scarlet letter consist of sin. Adultery was the theme of the scarlet letter adultery was that theme of sin. (Weinauer) Adultery is voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not his or her spouse. Hester Prynne was married and had an affair with Dimmesdale which leads to pearl. Pearl Prynne is the product and embodiment of sin. She is the culmination of Hester and Dimmesdale’s sin, and the soul advocation of Chillingworth’s hate and revenge. (John) Pearl is the emblem of her guilt and torture, referring to Hester and Pearl being that she is the apple of her mothers eye and her constant punishment. The statement To the untrue man the entire universe is false has a lot of meaning behind it. To me it means that anyone who can hide and hinder the truth and don't admit the truth, the universe will then become unreal because only truth is real and being untrue or lying will then create a false image of the world, the universe is now made up entirely of
The question that I will be answering is a very dark yet interesting question that can add and or take away from the story. The Crucible is very dark and talks about a very deep subject and is based on true events in history. This is a story about a girl named Abigail Williams who was caught dancing in the woods and was blamed for summoning demons with other girls. She also lost a guy that she loved named John Proctor due to him marrying a wife. She blamed her servant Tituba and she was going to be killed unless he confessed to being with the devil. She didn 't want to die so she confessed this caused all the girls to start to scream names to save themselves as well. This caused people to get prosecuted because of the girls lying due to the sense of the revenge in Abigail. People were later hung because of the girl 's selfish ways saving themselves. The title of the book I will be using as a reference from is The Crucible and the author of this book is Arthur Miller. Revenge to me in this story is very strong and crime is even stronger. Revenge in this story is how Abigail William 's wanted John Proctor back so she tries to kill Elizabeth Proctor throughout the whole story. Crime is
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a story that relates to the U.S. in the 1950’s during the war against communism. During the 1950’ communism was a real problem. Just like in the the crucible when they were hanging people who were accused for being a witch, many people were accused of being communist. One of the many people who was accused was Langston Hughes. People who were accused where well known people like in the crucible when well known people of the village was accused of witchcraft. Many people were wrongfully accused because other people wanted what they had. Like how in the crucible Abigail accused Elizabeth because she wanted to marry John, like many people during the red scare. This is one of the stories that relate to us today there is many more.
“The Crucible” was created as an allegory for the events of the red scare and McCarthyism, a crisis that can relate to today. Instead of fighting and hunting the communist in America, it has changed to hunting and fighting for the illegal immigrants and terrorist in America. Terrorism and illegal immigrants are our nation's modern crisis. The people of Salem's crisis were the “witches” inhabited in their colony. Like the people of Salem and McCarthyism,
The Crucible is a twist on McCarthyism in many ways. McCarthyism is when Joseph McCarthy stated that hundreds of members of government were communists. Abigail Williams also wrongly accused others, but in her case it is witchcraft and not communism. Many people would wonder why they would do something like this. One reason is they distract and make
The Scarlet Letter is an intricate allegory that takes place in a puritan society in the 1600’s. Author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, vividly articulated his anti-transcendentalist views. Written in the 1800’s, The Scarlet Letter challenges one’s mind to find the to find the light in the dark. Hawthorne also challenges the reader’s mind with the use of symbolism, where he uses objects or words as symbols that hold a deeper meaning. In his novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the symbolism of wild rosebush, Pearl, and Dimmesdale to contribute to the overall theme of imperfection.
William Ellery Channing said “The great hope of society is in individual character.” The fate of society rests in the hands of the people who live in it. There are so many different types of people in the world, and each person impacts the world in a different way. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, was written in the 1900s about events that happened in the 1600s. His purpose was to call out people’s actions and show the reader that hundreds of years later, nothing has changed. Many of the characters only care about themself and their own reputation. They do not care about what is actually going on in the society, as long as they are not looked down upon. It is hard to put other people before yourself, which is why most people do not do this. We criticize the way people acted in The Crucible, yet we act the same way.
The Crucible showed how gullible people were to believe in something that was being made up by some children. Reading about how people were lead by children and what they were saying just makes the human race look even more pathetic. People were put on trial and even sentenced to death by the children of Salem and their crazy accusations. Over the years accusations related to what happened in The Crucible happened all throughout history. False accusations were made during the time of the Red Scare and they are still happening now in 2016.
Arthur Millers, The Crucible is set in an era of deceit and pretense. Through the cracks in the illusion of the ‘perfect society’ based around morals of Christianity and a strong religious agenda_ greed, hypocrisy and a struggle for power slip through. This society harboured the perfect conditions for the witchtrials to fester and become bloodier than ever imagined.
Women in the mid eighteen hundreds were treated dreadfully and a lot of disrespectful. Reading The Scarlet Letter, makes you realize how much society has changed over the past few decades. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book is a dark tale symbolizing sin, righteousness, and determination. He introduces five different characters who seem to add different tones to the story. One adds hope and determination and another adds suspense and rage to the feeling of the novel. The Scarlet Letter is about shame and how it can catch up with you. The Scarlet Letter is full of exciting, and suspenseful drama that will make your mouth drop.
