There’s no denying that social media has its many pros and cons, but I think that the positive impacts of social media outweigh its negative impacts. One example of how social media has been an influence for social change was during the Arab Spring, a series of uprisings, armed rebellions, and anti-government protests that took the Middle East by storm in early 2011. Social media, especially Twitter, was used as a communication tool; government corruption and injustices were unveiled, protests were organized, and many were rallied to join the cause of Arab Spring activists. Social media’s role in this revolution proved that it can be used to transform society and politics on a global scale. In regards to how we can begin to think critically
However, social media could also achieve this. It means that social media could also solve social injustice. Social change needs people who have ability to independent thinking and creative thinking. Independent thinking and creative thinking would be improved by the social media. Here is a great example from the Duke University. The provost of the university tried to rely on the iPod experiment to start their educational innovation for a digital age for incoming students. Every incoming student could get a new iPod and the university wondered how students utilize their iPods as tools for their study. The result was amazing. Students from different majors could utilize their iPods in different situations. Their learning and self-study became much more efficient than before. Medical students could use iPods for practicing their heart hearing skills, music students use iPods to upload compositions for self-listening and self-critique, and engineering students mangle and dissect iPods to study (50). This example shows that social media could practice independent thinking. Nobody teach student how to utilize IPods in their study. But they independently find effective ways to work on their own study. New forms of study are good samples of changing in education career. If people could utilize social media in a large picture, the society could also change
The use of social networking sites is rising at great rates. According to a report conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in 2012, ninety-five percent of individuals aged 12-17 use the internet; and eighty-one percent of those use social network sites (Pew Interest). Although it is known that social media can have a useful impact on lives, often times people forget that with a positive comes a negative. The continual use of social network sites will impact teen lives more negatively than positively because they can cause huge distractions from valuable and critical pursuits like education; they can also cause mental health issues and a reduction in communication skills.
Social media is a revolution, which we are currently experiencing. It has changed the way people communicate and interact with one another, and opens up many more avenues to share news, information, and just general chit chat. Social media is relatively quiet young, but is here to stay for the foreseeable future. We are now at a point where online, we can share, read and react to lots of individual information being posted on microblogging websites, such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr and more. Twitter in particular has been widely embraced, and will centre most of the discussion.
From the perspective of adolescents and teenagers growing up in such a hyper-connected world, having a smartphone just seems like a necessity, something that all parents feel obliged to giving to their child at a young age, should they have to contact them in case of emergency. But when can an item such as a smartphone turn into a device that sucks away confidence, self pride and the overall well-being of a child? A device that is making a child fear when it should be used in order to help them feel safe. This is what can happen when you introduce social media to children who do understand how to fully use it safely; who don’t understand the implications and consequences that come with silly mistakes made through social media but also don’t
Many people have access to social media daily. Sometimes people do not even think about how much they rely on social media. Many jobs would not exist if it were not for the social media; jobs like computer repair and even the people who created the computer and social media websites would not have jobs. People of today need to take a moment and realize and think about if all this social media use is
Social media has impacted everyone that has used it at some point in his or her life. Since the world is increasing in technology advances, so is social media, which can be good and bad. Technology has made a huge difference in the world and definitely how people are doing things now. Yes, the Internet can be good for the majority of things we use it for, such as doing research, keeping in touch with family or friends who are far away, and saving time and money. Others like to take advantage of social media and use it in a way that can hurt people; it may not hurt them physically, but it can hurt them emotionally.
Nowadays, it is not only common to have social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, but expected. Many people know the numerous benefits of signing-up for these accounts: keeping in touch with friends, being able to organize information and photographs, keeping track of dates or news, and many more. However, new research suggests that the use of these social media networks, specifically Twitter, can cause great unhappiness in relationships (“Twitter use…”). It appears that the social media page can act as a third member of the relationship. The use of these networks can take up so much time of one or both of the partners, that it is like having another person in the relationship. Unfortunately, this loss of time as well as the other negative affects social media has on relationships, can lead to communication issues and arguments.
“I didn't know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time –Betty White (“Betty White Quotes,” 2014, para. 1).” This quote can be interpreted to fit with several of the social media avenues that many people spend their time on. Day in and day out people post, tweet, share, and pin countless times throughout the world. These different forms of communication were first created for an easier way for people to connect with others. Yet now, so much time is spent on these social sites that it has warped the interactive part and is causing more damage than good. Many are growing a desire and are living for the amount of “likes” they can receive on a post or how many re-tweets they can generate. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. As White said, this can become an inordinate amount of wasted time and can ultimately grow into further damaging circumstances. These different social media channels can cause emotional harm through disparaging the relationship between friends, conjuring of a narcissistic personality, and the retrogradation of ones self-esteem.
Social networking has increasingly had a huge impact on society. Technology has opened the door to a vast amount of information and to the ability to relay that information to practically anybody at anytime and anywhere. People are constantly checking their email, updating their status on Facebook, sending tweets on Twitter, instant messaging, and texting. The debate of whether the use of social networking is a negative or positive aspect is a continuous one. In the case of Steven Pinker, his essay “Mind over Mass Media” argues that media technologies have a positive effect on mental development. In contrast, Sherry Turkle’s essay “Connectivity and Its Discontents” asserts that technology has a negative effect on interpersonal relationships. Although Pinker makes many excellent points on how technology is improving intelligence and Turkle provides exceptional ideas of how technology is damaging to relationships, neither Pinker nor Turkle provides the best answer to this question due to their lack of credibility and inclusion of logical fallacies. Instead, we should, while aware of the risks and dangers of social networking, use the Internet to its full potential.
environment where increased critical thinking and collaboration are possible. A study done by Annetta and Jackson shows that students who participate in social media as part of a class feel more connected to their peers that those students who do not participate in social media type education (Annetta, Jackson, 2011). Social media allows students to not only group themselves with peers who are similar, but also to enhance and link existing peer groups. In addition to enhancing established peer groups, social media can bridge the diversity that exists in classrooms by establishing a “neutral zone” in which students can interact with one another. For many
When you think about social media what do you think of. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Vine. Well social media is more than that. Social media is not just Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Social media is any online website that lets you interact with other people, share photo and information and keeps you updated. Or do you think about how it’s made a positive or negative impact on today’s society. In my personal opinion I think social media has made both positive and negatives impacts on today’s society .Some of the negative impacts are cyberbullying and addiction, and the positive impacts are spreading the word and increasing business sales.
Social media is a web-based tool that allows people to communicate, share interests and activities and consume information. There are many types of social media such as virtual games, publishing websites and communication websites. In “Connectivity and Its Discontents,” Sherry Turkle talks about how technology has taken over communication. In “Mind over Mass Media,” Steven Pinker talks about the growing controversies of technology and media. In “Reality is Broken,” Jane McGonigal talks about how games can bring a change to the world.
Technology development has changed our daily life and social media has changed our communication methods. The invention of new technologies seem to be cutting us off from contact with our fellow human beings. People no longer only think of face-to-face interactions or e-mails. Social network sites (SNS) like Twitter continues to attract users, many of whom turn to these spaces for social support for serious illnesses such as cancer. (Myrick, 2015) Social media brings convenience to us because we can use various technologies to make us feel happy, and no longer need to travel around to have a face to face communication. Technology has also saved human humongous time just getting one place to another. Although social media has shaped us into a non face to face communication style but the change might not be a bad occurrence for people. Psychologists (Chen and Kirmani), economics (David), individuals (Karli), and students (Martin) have different views on it, and this paper is going to reinforce the benefits brought by social media overshadow the negative impacts through demonstrating the views.
Social media provides high brand loyalty from customers , thus helping companies to attract more customers. Another study published by ( C.Convert 2014) found that 53% of Americans who follow brands in social are more loyal to those brands.
Think of a time when people didn’t have technology and how they had to interact, whether it had been from writing letters to using telegraphs, communicating with people was hard to come by back then. Of course times have changed and now technology has made it easier over the years, social media has become an essential part of our life whether it be on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and many other websites. Now days everybody is using it whether its companies using media to promote its products or even teachers to tweet out what last night’s homework was. Social media is a great tool that helps us connect with the world and communicate our ideas. Yet there are some people who believe that social media has a negative impact towards our society as they believe that people can get addicted to it, it causes them to get easily distracted, and many other dangers. Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world.
