Over the past 4 years at Kimberly High school, I have competed in cross country and track. Through competing in those sports I have developed myself as a person in many ways. I believe that the program that I have been put in has changed me for the better and made me enjoy running all the more. Running now is a part of my life, it makes me enjoy every day more and more. Running has also brought me closer to people. My closest friends are the runners at our school. We do everything together. During my senior year cross country season, I was named team captain again. We were behind by about 5 seconds going into the 3rd leg (my leg). I ran my fastest time all year, running harder than ever because I wanted to help our team as much as possible. Not only my 4x800 team but also the whole track team, as for we were a top contender to win conference and every point counted. I made up the gap almost entirely leaving our last runner to finish and win us the race. I have such a high regard for my teammates that when racing, I am almost never racing for me and almost entirely for my teammates. I have also acted as one of the captains of the team for the past two years. In cross country and track I was named a captain during my junior and senior year. Leading the team to three state appearances. I have always tried to make people not only a better runner but also a better person. I was named a team captain because I look at every athlete as equal and try to help each and everyone improve, I don’t just look at the varsity team as the athletes that matter. When I found out that I was one of the captains of the Varsity Sideline team, I had a beaming smile and felt satisfied with my achievement. As captain, cheerleaders on the varsity and the JV squads come to me with questions and small issues, and I enjoy the opportunity to help them. I have become even more organized and mature because the coach looks to me for help. Being selected as lead captain has had many rewards, it gave me a boost of confidence and inspired me to campaign for other leadership
I am now officially in my Senior year of Cross Country , and am close to the end of my season. My first race of this year though was a big accomplishment for me, because I hadn`t been able to run. When I ran that race though it made me just so happy I was able to finish it, I was`nt happy with the time, but there is always time for improvement. I was glad to be racing again and being apart of the team again. I believe that my injuries were a barrier in my way, but they did not stop my sports career.
Ever since I was little I wanted to be a captain just like my older sister. Back then I thought it was just a cool label, but in my past three years as a TCHS cheerleader I have quickly learned the amount of dedication and hard work this position entails. I qualify for being a captain because I have a good attitude, work well with others, and always put in an effort to work hard.
I am a runner. I was selected to be a cross country captain for my senior year and I had set myself a realistic goal of being one of the top five finishers at the state meet in the fall. I never had the thought that I could not do it; I knew I was going to be up there with the best. When the state meet came and I traveled with the team as captain, that race became one of the most memorable of my cross country career but not for the reasons I expected.
As a child I was not in to many sports or involved in school activities. Going through high school I figured out that being involved in a sport or a school club would make my high school experience better. The first and only sport I chose to do was track. Track changed my whole high school experience and life. I learned to never give up, and it kept me out of trouble throughout my four years of high school.
I’ve always been the type of person that truly enjoys athletics and have participated in nearly all sports offered to me. I started playing sports in elementary with club softball and basketball. As I entered my middle and high school years I was able to add the school sanctioned sports to my list of activities. This afforded me the opportunity of competing in volleyball, basketball, golf, track and softball. The camaraderie and life lessons of sports seemed invaluable to me.
It has brought me in contact with people that I otherwise would have never spoken to. Additionally, no value can be placed on the countless lessons it has taught me. I believe that leadership is an important skill to have, especially when teamwork is involved. Over the many years that I have played, I wanted the team to be really close. I thought that in order to be successful we must all treat each other like we wanted to be treated. The experience of being around the girls and coaches on my team made me feel like they were my second family. I would spend almost the same amount of time around them as I would my own family at home. I am extremely thankful that I have friends on the team and it is an honor for me to be one of their leaders.
The course is weird, it’s a two lap which is good. This means you know exactly what the second half of the race was going to be like. Me as the 4th runner, and the 3 and 5 guys, went single file for a good ⅜ ofa mile and we were zooming around corners. during the back half of the race, I was really close to medaling. I went as fast as I could, I had no idea how fast the race had been, I thought when I saw the teens clicking by it was a 19:teens but I got closer and it was 18:17 I was astounded and straight out of breath. That race we were 4 points behind the 2nd place team, and they were in our district. That set us up for a good week and effort during practice because if we had a race at the district race, we were going to make it as a team to state,which is the goal all season long. I was not feeling great that week and I thought it was going to be like my first xc race finishing with a 16:02 time for 2.x miles and a lot of girls beating me. The morning of race day, I felt like crap, but the bus ride nap to maryville made me feel fine and ready to secure a spot to state. During my four years of high school I believe that my involvement in sports has helped me become a better person in life. I participated in varsity basketball and Track & Field all four years and my experience in both sports has taught me life lessons that I can carry with me for the rest of my life.
The 400 relay was my best event. We placed in every meet and even took home some medals as the season progressed. As the track year rounded for the home stretch, we had only three more meets to compete in: the Tiger Invitational, regionals, and state.
Another concept I have learned from my participation in running is teamwork. No matter how hard we try, we cannot live our lives without others' help or without helping others. We must work together to succeed on the road ahead. This is the essence of teamwork. I know that even my personal success in cross-country and track is not solely mine. I know that my three district titles, one in cross country and two in track, in the 800 meter and 1600 meter runs, could not have been accomplished without my team's unequivocal support and for that, I thank them.
I had never really been a part of a team that had a chance to win something, but the potential was always there. I finally got my chance to be a part of such a team my sophomore year of track. Mr. Jones, the head track coach, had decided to experiment with some different races to gain more team points. Since the girls' team lacked a medley relay, he placed Cindy, Kim, Susan and I in those spots. Cindy would run the 400, Kim would run the 200, and Susan and I would start the race off by each running the 100. We all had worked viciously to earn those spots by running off against our teammates.
and I wanted to instill such a passion inside of these girls that they would set these goals for themselves as early on as first or second grade. I ultimately became captain of my high school’s varsity cheerleading team as a junior; this was a dream I had instilled in myself as a freshman. I was placed into that position along with two co-captains-both of them seniors- and consistently improving my leadership skills was a role I proudly took on as I aided prospects during tryouts, taught new skills, and kept the team from becoming pessimistic when our head coach resigned. Adding exercises into one’s daily routines can change their whole lifestyle. Many people look at exercise as being something just for people who want to lose weight or to become muscle bound, but there are a great deal of benefits that can be received from exercising regularly. Of course gaining muscle and losing fat are the two most popular reasons that usually attract people to the gym, but they make up a small part of the potential benefits that can be achieved with exercise. There are several ways in which I have benefited in my life from exercising regularly, besides just making me bigger and stronger. It has made me become more organized, helped me make better decisions, and motivated me to take on new challenges in life.
