How Prepared Should You Be? (Prep Work) There are some parts of the United States where students are being encouraged to start thinking about how to get into college when they are in middle school, or even in elementary school. Some people in the nation think that it’s essential to start early so that they are more prepared to go to college. Other people in the United States argue by saying that starting too soon might burn them out by the time they actually reach the college level. There are many different ways that parents and students may look at these arguments. Some people might believe that they should be somewhat prepared for going to college, but not at such extreme levels in which others believe. Every student out there has their various ways of learning. If there is somebody who absolutely does not want to go to college after high school, they are going to have a really hard time listening to college preparation stuff. It isn’t a bad thing to bring up college to young students, because it is very apparent that they need to know about it. However, when you have a class of fifth graders sitting there who don’t even know how to act mature in some situations, how are they supposed to understand college and the concept of it? There are some people that go to Worland High School who don’t even understand the concept of college, not because they didn’t learn early enough, but because it is a very difficult topic to think about. Many kids beginning the college - decision process may be feeling lost at first, and ”By telling all young people that they should go to college no matter what, we are actually doing some of them a disservice. ”(Owen and Sawhill 209) For a seventeen/eighteen year old, going to college is arguably the biggest decision that they have had to make in their life thus far, and having the facts that Owen and Sawhill produce can be invaluable to the decision-making process. Caroline Bird writes the statement in her 1975 article “The Case Against College (Bird 15-18)” that not every high school graduate is ready to attend college. It is 2010 and this article is still valid today. Some of the college students I have been around were not mature enough for obedience school let alone college. A few of the points she makes in the article are: College has never worked its magic for everyone. Does it make you a better person? Are colleges responsible for your children? Are my children living in a country club? I will use some of my own experiences as an example of college life, as well as examples from my daughter’s college experience, along with my nephews as well. As the economy evolves and the job market continues to get more competitive, it’s becoming harder to have a successful career without some kind of college degree. Pharinet says one of her students said “C’s get degrees”(681) but she leaves us to wonder whether she is a college professor, high school teacher, or maybe even a grade school teacher. Pharinet never indicates where she attended college, but her career requires a college degree. So that makes us ask ourselves, How can someone who attended college try to persuade us into believing college is not for everyone? Well, if we dig a little deeper we will see that Pharinet is not plain out saying college is not for us, but rather “there are too many students enrolled in school who simply don’t belong there”(Pharinet 680). First of all, many high school graduates cannot handle college. Isabel V. Sawhill and Stephanie Owen describe college as a place, “one can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree”. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. This may be extremely agitating and stressful to a student that is not good at studying. The new college student may realize that the schoolwork is too much for him to handle and instead drop out. "The more we know the world around us, the more successful we will be." This quote, from the introduction of my high school chemistry book, was my driving force as a teenager to attend college. My expectations of college were to gain insight into a world that I had not yet discovered. I had high aspirations of receiving a good education and obtaining a good job when I graduated. But four years later when graduation day arrived, I felt unfulfilled. In evaluating my education, I realized that I learned how to get good, but not great grades. I learned how to study to make the most of my time. The focus I shared with many of my peers was not always to appreciate the information received, but rather, to value the counsel from someone else who previously took that professor's class and maybe to be lucky enough to get a hold of last semester's examinations. Basically, I acquired useful skills for any job: to follow directions, to give the boss what he or she was asking of me, and to network and gain insight from other colleagues. It was still disturbing to me that after four years of schooling, I felt I had not received the education I initially expected. Overall, college does not bring out the full academic potential of the students who invest the time and money into an education. Teachers need to set aside their biases and restructure and develop curriculum, as well as student-teacher relationships, in order to truly develop college students into freethinking, exploratory people.
