Have you ever been in a really good mood then you decide to listen to your favorite song? Don't you just want to get up and dance? Music not only can be something to cure silence, but it can change one's mood. Although it might not put you into a good mood, it still affects your emotions. Emotion expressed in music affects one's mood through the use of thoughtful lyrics, different rhythms, notes, tempos and music classified with emotions.

Playing music that is considered relaxing can help set the mood for certain events (Paterson). Relaxing music used for a time to take a break and calm down helps to set the mood at which one wants to achieve. Music that is more hyper would not be used when trying to relax. Gloomy music or songs can cause feelings of grief (Boothby). Songs that are considered sad or depressing will have the effect of changing someone's mood to what type of emotion the song is. The type of music that people are listening to can correlate to the emotion they are experiencing (Boothby). Even if someone is already in a bad mood, listening to a sad song could just worsen their mood. Maybe one is sad and so the music he or she is listening to is classified as sad one could potentially feel depressed. Having used lyrics, notes, rhythms, tempos, and the different emotional type of music are all factors to change one's mood while listening to music. Some argue that music can affect mood but not as efficiently as art can. Different types of art forms like graffiti, paintings, or sculptures express more of a political viewpoint which can rally or end up changing the mood of the audience (Levy).
