For every technological introduction or advancement, there are consequences which come with it. This excludes not those that come with introduction of management information systems in companies. The modern society is entirely depended on information systems. Failure of these systems, today, can be declared as end of humanity. Worse enough is that there is a generational shift whereby future generations will not live without information systems that manage information. However, latest evaluations of the impact of management information systems have proven that there are chances, which are very high, of ethics being abused at the work place. Both the employees and the employers, are guarded by certain cord of ethics which aim at regulating the dignity of everybody at working place; and how far one party can be influential on the other especially on matters pertaining privacy. Profit making goals should not, by any means, overlook the importance of working ethics. This paper endeavors to explore areas of major concern where working ethics are likely to be compromised or have already been compromised at the working place due to institution of management information systems. Nevertheless, this research does not underscore the importance of these systems at the working place. The aim is to expose the negative impacts that might result from misuse of management information systems. These impacts can emanate from either party that forms part of the organization. In this case, mostly, it is either from the employee or the employer.

There has been a recent spike in the number of cases of employers terminating the service of their employees in the recent years. Some notable companies who have laid off staff include the aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, HSBC, and General Motors, mostly due to cost reduction exercises and outsourcing (Strain 2014, Lewis 2014). However, there have been some cases where companies are laying off staff due to advancements in technology and implementation of new systems, and one of these companies include Hewlett-Packard (HP), where the company was rapidly trimming down it’s 350 000-person workforce with new technology, with an estimated of 15000 job cuts from the middle of 2013 till the end of this year (2014) (Brown 2013). Bob Brown from ‘Network World’ describes it as one of the ‘bloodiest tech industry layoffs in 2013’. This new reason of employee layoffs, due to replacement of staff with improved systems to boost performance and efficiency in the workplace is relatively new. As a result of the influx in cases like this, a very dire question surfaces, that is, should the companies be responsible for the unemployment due to their information systems. The Britannica Encyclopaedia defines information systems as an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, and processing data and for delivering knowledge, information and other digital media (Encyclopaedia Britannica 2014). This makes the case of HP’s cloud system leading to unemployment as one of the sample cases of companies trimming down staff due to information systems. While some agree and others disagree on the question posed above, this question can actually be viewed from two different angles, based on ethical theories, namely in the Kantianism way and the Act Utilita...

One of the most recent examples of ethics and technology conflicts in the United States are privacy issues and how we cite, distribute and publish intellectual property on the internet. For instance, many corporations and people take advantage of the open access of the internet and the lack of legislation governing the right to post and upload information to the internet. Today, nearly every household in the United States has a computer with int...

When the internet was considered a global information system in 1995 millions of Americans participated in virtual communication. People began to communicate with each other and personal information began to be placed online by the stroke of the fingertips to their own computer. So the question is the privacy of individuals trusted online? Can people snoop around and see personal information? Of course people can if guidelines are not set in place to protect them. Public and private information can be complex when some individual(s) do not expect their communication to be read outside of their online community. What will be discussed are some ethical responsibilities that need to take place in the United States. Respecting the individual privacy and honor confidentiality is a must in this country.

...puter technology are rooted in the general ethical issues that people in society deal with. For example, the ethical issues such as invasion of privacy, theft, and fraud have been around since human beings began interacting with each other. The fact is that elements of these ethical issues are not unique to the computer field or computer technology. These current technologies raise the same ethical dilemmas with conditions that are unique to computer and cyber technology. This explains why we general ethical issue are such as privacy, theft and fraud are reexamined as informational privacy, identity theft and computer fraud in computer technology.
