Stress is a factor in most American lives. Stress can be classified as a specific way a student responds to multiple pressures of life simultaneously. When a highschool student is loaded with dual enrollment credits and after school activities, the requirements for each add up. The stress, or a feeling of struggling, seems to surround normal thoughts. Stress is a feeling that envelops life, alters normal function, and hinders relationships.

While cooking for a younger sibling, the teenager may forget to turn the noodles down to low heat. That might happen because the student’s mind had drifted to the multiple distractions introduced during the day. The normal everyday function of simply cooking was altered by stress from the day. Stress could be defined as dwelling on a task that alters normal function.
Stress hinders relationships because stress, like hunger, can shorten a temper. After a long day, most people are not as considerate towards others. A teenager can have a sharper attitude towards their parents after a particularly daunting day when stress is introduced. After multiple days, the relationship between the teenager and parents is affected. That type of effect can also happen between a student and teacher or a coach and athlete.
Enveloping life, altering normal function, and hindering relationships are all effects of stress on life. Although stress is a large factor of the average American’s life, the effects can be balanced by relaxing and having fun. Stress is not relaxing, but can be a motivator to relax. The United States is a country focused on bettering an opponent, but some people aren’t cut out for the constant competition. Those members of society seem to be left in the dust and expected to fend for themselves. Because of the pressures being placed on Americans, it is almost natural to constantly search for a sense of comfort and relaxation. A variety of coping methods have been published in books and articles by psychiatrists, but the audience in which they are written for is rapidly expanding to younger generations. People too often make the assumption that damaging amounts of stress do not surface until college and early adulthood, but studies over the past five years show that stress takes an overwhelming toll on high school students.
According to the American Institute of Stress, stress can be defined as an individual’s response, physical, mental or emotional, to an event that causes a demand for change (Selye, 1936). For athletes, that demand for change can be caused by an injury, which ultimately can have a significant impact on overall stress levels. While a physical injury can cause psychological stress, mental trauma can similarly affect an athlete physically. An athlete’s psychological stability has a great affect on an athlete’s susceptibility to pain and can alter the response to and recovery from an injury (Ahern, 1997).
It’s one of the many inevitable parts of life. Whether it’s busting out a research paper for Psychology at the last minute, expecting your first child to be born, or making sure you’re up in time to catch the Saturday morning cartoons, it’s clearly evident that everyone goes through stress. The real question is, how is stress handled in our society? A person is defined by how they handle the stressors in their lives and how they overcome stressful moments. Everyone deals with stress at some point in his or her life. Most people deal with it daily. As defined in the book called Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, stress is, “The mental, emotional, and physiological response of the body to any situation that is new, threatening, frightening, or exciting” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). This stress is caused by a stressor, which is also known as “a stress-causing event” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). Stressors can take all different forms, from moving to a new town, having a baby, or even writing a paper (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). One major stressor in life can be going to college. If not coped with properly, these stressors can leave a person with too much stress that could end up harming them mentally and physically, such as developing an illness (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). There are several ways to cope with stress. Some healthy ways to cope with stress would be practicing emotion-focused coping, building time-management techniques, and practicing meditation.

Stress comes in many shapes and forms, it comes with the job of being human. My sources of stress come from the major parts of my life; academic pressure, social settings, and time management. As a high school student, high school in general is very stressful, but not only am I high school student I am also a college student. Double the responsibility means double the stress.
