In The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir and written by Andrew Wiccol, a man named Truman Burbank is unknowingly the star of a reality TV show. The film’s audience finds this out before he does, and wants him to realize that nothing around him is real and that it would be best for him to leave Seahaven. As the reality that Christof created falls apart around Truman, the audience observes every moment and knows the truth and wants Truman to as well. The intimate relationship established with the audience in The Truman Show is scrutinized because of the surveillance that Truman is under and the constructed reality falling apart. The intimacy that builds throughout the film can be observed from the moment it starts. In the opening scene
of The Truman Show, interviews are taking place and the camera flashes back to Truman multiple times as the show is aired when he is in the bathroom, which is believed to be the most private room in the house. This is where we see Truman at his most genuine and vulnerable: when he is alone. It is soon revealed that he is not able to leave Seahaven because of the constant surveillance that he has been under for 10, 909 days. As he stares into the mirror, which has a hidden camera behind it, the film audience gets the first view of Truman: a man who is pretending to climb Mt. Everest while he thinks that no one else can see him. However, the film audience can, and a relationship is quickly established in the first few moments of the movie. The film’s audience is watching the scene and immediately wants Truman to know that he has been watched his entire life. The audience having an emotional response in just the first scene even though the movie starts en media res instead of from the beginning of Truman’s life shows how seeing him as the explorer stuck in a dome quickly draws in the audience, and it helps to understand that no matter how constructed Truman’s reality is, he will always remain real. The audience has observed all of the things that Christof has placed in the show and notices how each one is not real, but Truman does not catch on until much later. In the beginning of the film when Truman is about to go to work, a stage light labeled ‘Sirius (9 Canis major)’ falls from the sky and almost hits him. The light is actually one of the fake stars that was set in the sky to make it seem like the night sky is real. Later in the film, the rain setting malfunctions and the raincloud not only rains just on Truman, but follows him around until it finally rains all over the beach. These are a few of the signs that something is not right, and the audience wants Truman to know that nothing around him is real. The connection between character and audience deepens, and the audience continues to observe Seahaven slip and fall apart. As Christof’s reality begins to malfunction, Truman begins to pick out the things that are not real in his life, and eventually sets himself free. The film audience has been able to see through Christof’s constructed and controlled reality the entire time, and once Truman does as well, the film audience truly does understand that Truman remained genuine because he did not know the truth in the beginning. Being able to observe all the events of The Truman Show helps the audience understand that only the truth could set Truman free in a world where nothing is real.

In this first stage of cognition, the cave dweller is shackled and can only see shadows of figures on the wall in front of him. His reality is based on his imagination of these figures. “To them, I said, the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images.” Similarly, Truman’s reality is based on this imaginary world where his parents, wife, and everyone else around him are hired actors. Early in the film Truman seems to be happy although he is already starting to imagine himself in Fiji which he points out is the furthest place from Seahaven.

Not everyone likes what the other person likes and in these societies the main characters have problems on their own trying to figure out what they should do. The Giver is about 12 year old boy named Jonas who lives in a strict environment and becomes the new Receiver of memory and faces the lies that has been hidden away from all the people. The Truman Show which is a movie that is about a 34-year-old man who has been watched from everybody ever since he was in his mother’s womb. Truman later realizes this and puts a stop to the whole show. Between The Giver and The Truman Show there are many similarities and differences that can be found.

What are the issues of watching and voyeurism in film? The intention of this essay is to discuss both films (The Truman Show, 1998 and Rear Window, 1954) alongside established theoretical criticism (Laura Mulvey and Norman K. Denzin) in an attempt to demonstrate how the issues of watching and voyeurism, as seen in todays mainstream Hollywood cinema, both engages and entices the spectator and to look at how the definition of the voyeur has changed. Before entering into a discussion about voyeurism in Rear Window and The Truman Show, an understanding of what is meant by ‘the dynamics of voyeurism’ in film must be attempted. The dictionary definition of a voyeur is: (1) a person who gains sexual pleasure from watching others when they are naked or engage in sexual activity, and/or (2) a person who enjoys seeing pain or distress of others. Voyeurism is initially noted for the investigation of the woman, demystifying her mystery, however, I think this definition is a small interpretation of the word voyeur. So the intention of this essay is to explore further the meaning of voyeurism by looking at two films adjacent to, two critics with conflicting opinions of what voyeurism is represented by in film. But to understand what voyeurism means we need to look at the cinematic gaze and two types of looks; scopophilia and narcissism.
Truman Burbank lives in an artificially created world. There are three worlds, which take place in Seahaven. They are Truman’s world of Seahaven, Christof’s world which is located in the moon and the views of the audience and how they interpret and react to the Truman Show. All these worlds need to rely on each other in order to exist. The Truman show in not told in sequential order and has a difficult narrative structure to follow. Through the use of cinematic and film techniques the director Peter Weir and writer Andrew Niccol have communicated a message about society and the role of power in the media.

Often, though, it seems these men are more running away from society than really running to the unknown. And in The Truman Show, that is what Truman is truly doing- running to the unknown in order to escape the responsibilities of his current life. Thus The Truman Show, which looks to be a hip postmodern film about subjectivity, is actually a modernist film tying into the frontier metanarrative in which society represents a binding world, and the frontier embodies the male escapist fantasy of no responsibility.
Truman displays great zeal for life like a lunatic, but he discovers that his life was not real. He then goes on, with the same, undying fanaticism to investigate the living hell that was once his happy life. In his methods, he embodies the Socratic virtues of courage and temperance as he lunges forth like a great tiger somewhere in Africa. The cast lacks the courage and the wisdom to tell Truman the truth, the director has all three but in all the wrong ways, and the audience lacks the wisdom to know that by not watching the show they free Truman, lacks the temperance for indulging on the show every day, and lacks the courage to do something more productive with their lives in the time they spend watching the Truman Show. From the town of Pullman, a company town south of Chicago to Disney World, attempts to force Utopia have failed, falling prey to the complications of people’s personal desires. The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, tells us the story of The Truman Show, an elaborate reality show built around the control of one man’s life. Christof, the director, has created an entire living city for Truman, the star of his show, and the only one not in on this whole elaborate fakery. Essentially, Truman is living his life in the simulation of a flawless, archetypal American town, for the entertainment of millions of viewers around the world. Christof, along with countless others obsessed with the idea of controlling part of the world to fit their visions of an ideal reality, have deluded themselves into thinking fictional utopias can exist apart from the undeniable constraints of reality. Their fundamental flaw lies in relying on the assumptions of psychological behaviorism, and the belief that they could perfectly condition the behavior of the inhabitants follow the goals of the community.
