Honor Among the Lawless. To be honorable is to have integrity. Can the ones committing crime, drunk in the gutter, or those who have died as hoodlums have such thing as honor? In the book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, a gang called “Greasers” have honor. The book is about a rivalry between The Greasers, who are the poor kids, and the Socs who the rich kids. The Greasers are hoodlums, who do not always think clearly and let emotions, such as anger and sadness control them. The Greasers may not look like the type to show honor, but, the Greasers are honorable because they stick up for each other, have acts of bravery and courage, and care for each other. To begin, the Greasers there is honor among Greasers because the care for each other. …show more content…
For instance, in the movie while talking to a Soc named Cherry, Ponyboy sticks up for a friend, Dally. Ponyboy thinks to himself,”You stick up for your buddies, no matter what they do.” (26) This shows that Greasers can show honor by sticking up for each other. Sticking up for someone is honorable because it shows that you are thinking of not only yourself, but others. It shows that you are having integrity by defending him when you don’t have to. It also shows respect to that person. Respect and integrity are honorable. Additionally, the Greasers are honorable because they do acts of kindness and bravery.
For example, the Greasers did acts of bravery and kindness when, Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally saved the children in the church. Ponyboy says to the kids in the church,”We’re goin’ to get you out!” (92) This is honorable because they are helping others and not being selfish. Johnny even sacrificed his good health for the children, taking a big injury. Dally, also risked his life when he went back into the church to save Johnny, proving that even he, the most dangerous hood in the gang, can be honorable. Furthermore, The Greasers helped others, risking their lives for them, which shows they are …show more content…
honorable. Also, the Greasers are honorable because they care for others, not just themselves. For example, the three brothers, Ponyboy, Soda, and Darry, really care for each other. In the book, Soda says,”We’re all we got left, we ought to stick together against everything.” This shows that the Greasers don’t think of themselves, but others too. They show that they aren’t the selfish thugs that they seem to be. The Greasers show honor in this way because they have respect to others, they care for others, which makes them honorable. Therefore, they are honorable because they have integrity and respect towards each other, and because honor is defined as this, they are honorable. On the contrary, some might think that the Greasers are dishonorable they do crimes.
For example, the Greasers are considered dishonorable when Johnny kills Bob. Killing someone is dishonorable because it takes life away, and it can never be replaced. Johnny killing someone is wasting Bob’s life. However, this is not true because, even though Johnny killed Bob, Johnny did it with the intention of saving Ponyboy. Ponyboy was being drowned by Bob and Johnny had to step in to save Ponyboy. Saving someone is honorable because it prevents the loss of life. Also, intentions can sometimes make up for bad actions. Therefore, the Greasers are actually honorable, and not dishonorable from killing
Bob. As shown above, in The Outsiders the Greasers are honorable. As has been noted, Greasers have honor when they stuck up for one another. For the most part, Greasers show having honor when they did acts of bravery and courage. As can be seen, they also showed having honor when they cared for each other. In the book, people are judged by their appearance, and the Greasers are considered dishonorable people but, based the Greasers are actually honorable. Using this knowledge, people can be judged on how they are inside, not outside.
When living sometimes we are faced with difficult decisions that affect our friendships. If you knew you were in a jam, what would you do? Who would you run to? Despite the greasers’ reputation as heartless young criminals, they live by a specific code of friendship and honour. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, there are many instances in which the gang members make selfless choices by putting the needs of others ahead of their own. Three examples are, when the gang has each other’s back, Johnny and Ponyboy’s friendship, and Dally risking his life for Johnny.
My evidence for why the Greasers struggle more than the Socs is that the Greasers have to make many personal sacrifices, & they experience a lot of violence. The Greasers are poor with a few good friends to help them, while the Socs are rich with no “real” friends to support them. Because of the sacrifices they made & the violence they were exposed to, the Greasers struggled more than the Socs. The Greasers struggle more because they were exposed to violence. According to pg. 33 of The Outsiders, “...one of them had a lot of rings on his hand--that’s what had cut Johnny up so badly. It wasn’t just that they had beaten him half to death-he could take that. They had scared him. They had threatened him with everything under the sun.” Explain how the quote shows the
One of the prevalent themes in The Outsiders is loyalty to oneself and others. Loyalty is everything for the Greasers. Whether it was right or wrong,
When Johnny and Pony killed Bob, Dally covered for them and had them go hide out in the church until the cops were gone. Also, when Pony and Johnny went into the burning church to save the kids, Dally put out the fire that was on Pony’s back and he attempted to save Johnny. Johnny was heroic because he killed Bob when he was trying to kill him and Pony. Also, he was heroic because he went into the burning church to save the kids. Without Johnny doing that, the kids would’ve been burned to death or gotten seriously hurt. In conclusion, Dall is heroic because he helped Johnny out in the police situation, and Johnny is heroic because he saved the
However, many would view his The idea of honor much like the victor of war, has no true answer, but the most correct observation lays in perspective. Each soldier fights for their own individual cause, while one views the other as dishonorable, they likely view themselves as honorable, as a soldier willing to sacrifice.
Honor can be defined by how one holds them in the public eye. Others may say that honor is how you live your life when none can see your actions. However defined honor can play major roles in how a person will act in a given situation. The Crucible by Arthur Miller has excellent examples of how honor can manipulate people’s decisions in times of importance. John proctor holds his moral standpoint and does not falter into the temptations of selfishness, while Elizabeth would describe honor as how a person lives their lives. Some can even describe honor as what is most important in life; family. Giles believed that his life was the ultimate object he could sacrifice to maintain his family’s happiness. However honor can be defined, one thing is certain; Everyone has some degree of honor in their lives.
For instance, “It had taken more than nerve for him to say what he'd said to Dally—Johnny worshiped the ground Dallas walked on, and I had never heard Johnny talk back to anyone, much less his hero.” (pg. 24) This means that even though Johnny respected Dally because he was there for him when his parents weren’t, he took a risky step and stopped him from doing something wrong. By doing this, it shows that Johnny isn’t afraid to protect others like Cherry when the situation involved his friend Dally. More importantly, “I swear, you three are the bravest kids I’ve seen in a long time. First you and the blacked-haired kid climbing in that window, and then the tough-looking kid going back in to save him. Mrs. O'Briant and I think you were sent straight from heaven. Or are you just professional heroes or something?” (pg. 95) As shown, it is important to realize that Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally wouldn’t only defend their gang members, but they would also endanger their own lives in order to save others. It proves that their act of heroism can be used in all situations. No matter what situation they are in, the Greasers use their heroic actions towards not only their gang members but other people
William Shakespeare's play, Julius Caesar, has a heavy focus on honor. The characters in the play have a tendency to refer back to honor and the honor of Rome, but are they really as honorable as they say? Honor is a very abstract concept that is widely applicable in many situations, but what is it? To honor someone is to show them respect, and to be honorable is to act in a way that deserves respect and admiration. The characters of Julius Caesar, for the most part, are all seeking some form of honor, but do they achieve it? Three of the best examples of honor in Julius Caesar are Brutus, Cassius, and Portia. With varying levels of honor, these characters display the spectrum well.
In Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, Brutus and Cassius are both considered honorable men by the public. But, like all traits, honor is in the eye of the beholder. Honor is defined as evidence or symbols of distinction. Those who are placed in power are often chosen because of their traits, which include being honorable. If those in power have any faults, it could diminish their position in the eyes of the public.
The Socs and the Greasers have a feud that has been going on for a long length of time. In the story, S.E. Hinton created characters that try to portray themselves as tough in the public eye, when actually they are normal human beings with a healthy spirit. After Johnny was hurt,
When Ponyboy was thinking about what the people in the gang do what they do, he assumed that Greasers and Socs are divergent. Ponyboy thinks to himself, “We deserve a lot of our trouble...both of them have too much energy, too much feeling, with no way to blow it off.” (Hinton 16) This quote is memorable because it shows that the Socs choices are more narrow, displaying that when a Soc does something wrong, they could lose their fame and their luxury. On the other hand, the greasers have boundless choices because they have nothing to waste, they are already at the bottom, so most of the things they do, won’t really change what they already have. In the short story “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” by Evan Hunter, Freddy, a normal human, who had more power than Andy, the Royal who is lying on the floor bleeding, made a choice that decided that the fate of a person. Freddy had a judgement whether or not to help a Royal from the floor that is bleeding. He, afraid of the higher-ups, the Guardians, was apprehensive and decided to leave him alone, this choice notifies us that he was fearful to help a person because he might get himself arrested and possibly die as well, but this alternative costed a life of another person. This shows that although Freddy had more power and almost nothing to lose, like the Greasers, he didn’t chose to help Andy, the person who had less
Superheroes; they save and protect the world’s people. They courageously stand up and battle against evil, anarchy, injustice, crime, and sin. When the world has nothing else to defend itself, they are the ones who are present with a duty to safeguard everyone. The superheroes you may know, such as: Superman, Batman, Iron Man, etc. all have extraordinary superhuman powers which they use to shield those in need. However, anyone can be a superhero. Throughout history, many people have become like superheroes not because of extraordinary powers, but extraordinary courage, bravery, humanity, and love. Those people made a choice to risk everything they had in order to save another human being. Is it the right thing for a person to stand up and do the right thing?
In S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders Socs and Greasers are enemies. Society put them against each other and labeled them. Greasers are the poor, dirty, no-good kids that nobody wants around. Socs are stuck-up, perfect, rich kids who looks down on everybody. In the book, two boys- Johnny and Ponyboy- start some trouble with a couple of Socs, and Bob is killed. They have to run from the police, all while the tension between Greasers and Socs is thicker than ever. Throughout the novel, it explains how “things are rough all over”. The Greasers have it the worse because they feel emotions so harshly, they are constantly getting jumped by the Socs, and they only have each other because their families are broken.
HONOR CAN BE DEFINED IN SO MANY WAYS CAN mean respect and esteem shown to another. HONOR may ALSO apply to the recognition of one's right to great respect or to any expression of such recognition IN SOME SITUATIONS IT implies profound respect mingled with love, devotion. There is a priceless respect that everyone in the world possesses, and that is the. respect of a person?s honor. A person?s honor is something that can not be bought, sold,. or traded it?s something that must be gained by the respect of your peers. An example of. how honor is seen in everyday life in through a persons word. The standard dictionary definition of honor first lists public regard and esteem under the word, with ethical conduct or high standards of justice and responsibility appearing much further down the list. This is reflected in the way the modern world treats the issue of honor. In ancient times, honor was the manner of being that we now describe as having integrity. In plain language, an honorable person avoids deception whenever possible, treats others with respect and sticks to her beliefs no matter how others think or act. People generally do not seem to behave very well toward each other any more.Honor determines the hierarchy of an individual while revealing his loyalty and true intentions. Reward comes for those at the top whose honor does not diminish, while a false or fleeting honor of a lesser mortal causes destruction. Exploring and discussing how to act honorably toward each other is a place to start. The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be. How can you be a person of integrity? First, figure out what integrity (honor) is. My mother used to say to treat others the way you wanted to be treated. Does anyone do that these days? Well, I know that I don't want to be cut off in traffic, or yelled at, or bumped into rudely at the grocery store, or left picking up garbage all over my yard from the street. So I could try not to do those things to other people. I won't cut off others in traffic, or yell, or act rude at the grocery store, or throw garbage in the street. That's just a place to start. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
