Have you ever read two short stories by the same author? Ever noticed the similarities? Well, Edgar Allan Poe’s stories and poems are very similar if you analyze them. He manages to keep them all very morbid but still adds some irony in there to keep you smiling. The following presents the similarities and differences between “The Masque of The Red Death” and “The Black Cat” about theme, characters and writer’s style.

In the short story “The Black Cat”, Poe starts introducing the protagonist as a man in jail who is awaiting his death for the crime he has committed. The man used to always be joyful and loving, but with the power of alcohol, the man became abusive to his animals and wife. The mysterious cat began to annoy him and he tries to kill it, but his wife stops him so he kills his wife instead. He attempts to hide the body behind a wall, but as the police come and look for his wife they hear a cat’s meow behind the wall. “[He] had walled up the monster within the tomb.” (The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe pg.5) The man then got sentenced to death for committing a murder. Not only did the man start off happy and loving and then turned into insane and murdering, but he also saw things differently. At the beginning of the story, he described his cat as a “...beautiful animal, entirely black, and to an astonishing degree.” (pg.1) and towards the end of the story, he describes the cat as a ‘beast’ who condemned him to death. In the short story “The Masque of The Red Death”, Poe begins the story by introducing a happy king who wants to throw a masquerade which protects all in the kingdom from the red death.
