It is said thirty-one million people in America can not afford good healthcare. So when one of those people are in need of let's say a heart transplant they’re out of luck. In the movie John Q this is a recurring topic. So in order to fight his insurance and the hospital John Q himself holds hostages in the emergency room of the hospital hoping to get a heart for his son. John Q is relevant to today as shown from the movies conflicts, characters, and theme. There are many conflicts in the movie John Q, including all types of conflict between a person or people. Such conflicts include person versis person or an external conflict. John Q, the main character, shows a lot of emotion and realism in this movie. He can be seen as stubborn, crazy, and cruel. Many people most likely think this when the emergency room is taken hostage. But if you look at the intentions of why he did it he could also be seen as loyal, scared, and good hearted. Loyal to his son and getting him a new heart, scared he won’t get the heart in time and his son will die, and good-hearted because he never wanted to hurt anyone, he just wants a heart for his son. His wife can also be seen as loyal but scared. Scared he son won’t get a new heart, scared of what will happen to her husband after the mess is over. But loyal in the fact that when the police try to use her against John Q she refuses to keep her husband and son safe. The head of the hospital is portrayed as cruel, stubborn, and cold-hearted. She refuses to put John Q’s son on the donor list and when he holds the emergency room hostage she tries to trick him by saying his son is on the donor list when he really isn’t. This whole time the son lays in a hospital bed scared, scared he won’t get a new heart. Brave because to endure this type of pain without timely treatment you have to be brave to survive. And also determined to live. This range of diverse characters show how real the movie is because not everyone in the world is kind but on the other hand not everyone in the world is evil and the movie

John and his wife rush him to the hospital and discover Mikey’s heart is three times larger than it should be and he will need a heart transplant in order to live. With john working in a factory and his wife just being a waitress they clearly do not have that kind of money and are even having a hard time paying their bills at home. They have no stocks or bonds, $ 1,000 in their bank account, and don’t even own their home plus their insurance will not cover the surgery. If Mikey does not undergo surgery he will only have a few months to live. This leads John and his wife to do everything in their power to raise money. They sell their television, car, and furniture along with the church giving them the collection money. Filling for Medicade , welfare, and different insurance does not work and are out of luck at this point. John decides he needs to do something quick or he will lose his son soon. He goes to the head person of cardiology, Dr. Turner, holds a gun to his back and tells him to do something to help his soon.
