Jorge Estrada English Section 3 Option 1 3/21/2018 The Book Thief , is a fictional novel by Markus Zusak that takes place in Molching, Germany during the Holocaust. The book is narrated by death and the author uses the bold face technique to foreshadow what is going to come in the near future. This is a great way to include messages that suggest later occurrences , and to use certain words to symbolize a big theme or how a character feels. Death also uses colors to represent how people die. He also tells the story of a girl called Liesel Meminger who is going to a town where she meets her foster parents, Rosa Hubermann and Hans Hubermann. For example, when Liesel finds the dead body of Hans and places the accordion next to his body and when Rosa holds it when he’s sent away to the war. The accordion has had an immense impact on the lives of the Hubermanns and has created comfort for them.
Rosa would hold the instrument which made her feel the presence of Hans. It was the only thing that created a sense safety for her and could remember how happy he was. “Rosa Hubermann was sittings on the edge of the bed with her husbands accordion tied to her chest”(p.429)She also recalls his positive outlook on life and uses it to help her go through those tough nights of just thinking if he was going to return home safe.This also helped liesel realize how much Rosa loved her father. This made her feel hopeful and comfortable that one day Hans will come back home to see his family and that she was going to be able to spend more time with him until the day of the bombings that will occur on Himmel Street. He was a great example of a parent. As she was taken away she places the accordion next to Hans body and the instrument represents his entire life. It also connects him and Max’s Father. Lisel loves him and appreciates him for everything he has done for. He was not afraid when death came and took him. He helped max because he didn’t want to see another person die or get injured due to his errors. Hans was the person that Lisel could rely on the most and felt protected
with. The Book Thief touches upon many impactful moments that happened in the real world. The accordion gives the characters a sense of hope and comfort but more specifically when Rosa holds the accordion and when Liesel places the instrument next to Hans body. The heavily proclaimed novel “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak is a great story that can help you understand what living in Nazi Germany was like. Throughout the story, the main character, Liesel goes through many hardships to cope with a new life in a new town and to come to the recognition of what the Nazi party is. Liesel was given up for adoption after her mother gave her away to a new family, who seemed harsh at first, but ended up being the people who taught her all the things she needed to know. Life with the new family didn’t start off good, but the came to love them and her new friend, Rudy. As the book carried along, it was revealed that the Hubermanns were not Nazi supporters, and even took in a Jew and hid him in their basement later on in the book. The rough summary of the bulk of the book is about a young girl named Liesel, who she and her mother are on a train, when suddenly her brother Werner dies. They get off immediately at the next stop to bury him. One of the gravediggers had a book in his hand, but he drops it, and Liesel picks it up. Liesel and her mother keep going to Munich, then to a place called Molching. When her parents are sick, Liesel needs to be put with foster parents. She is put with a couple named Hans and Roma. Liesel has nightmares about her brother who died on the train, when she first arrives at the Hubermann’s house and she would wake up screaming. Liesel goes to a school, where she is made study with the younger children because she is behind in her education. Liesel turns ten in February, and is given a doll by the her foster parents. She also gets a uniform, and is enrolled in the Hitler. Her foster mother starts taking Liesel with her when she gets washing from the neighbors in Molching, and when Liesel is old enough she is going to start doing the same thing also.

Music could be a symbol in the story because it was mentioned several times throughout. Music is everywhere within the story it is at restaurants, cars and homes. I believe that the music in the story relates to Connie’s feeling about boys and her sexual desire. It’s almost like Connie depends on the music, it could represent her desire to have a good time.
The grandchild “proudly” shows the grandmother the picture hoping to change the negative aura surrounding them. “With crayons the child draws a rigid house and a winding pathway.” (924) As already stated, “house” represents the grandmother. The winding pathway shows a new path opening up in her life. A look into who may be behind this emotional roller coaster is now featured. “Then the child puts in a man with buttons like tears…” (924) Tears to the child have an entirely different meaning than to the grandmother. The grandchild sees happiness in tears, showing that you can find something positive in anything that seems to be upsetting. The man symbolizes the loss the grandmother is feeling. The grandchild drew this picture to cheer up the grandmother. It is at the end of the pome do we find out what tears mean to the grandmother. The grandmother does not acknowledge the drawing and tries to hide her true feelings. While she is doing this, “secretly…the little moons fall down like tears from between the pages of the almanac into the flower bed the child carefully placed in the front of the house.” (924) The grandmother is coming to the realization that dwelling on the past brings will not make her loss return. The author uses symbolism as well in this story to support the theme. Firstly, the author uses a closed door as a symbol of separator. The closed door separated her from her sister and her friend. She is free from the surroundings. Although she "wept at once" (69) after her husband's unfortunate, things are changing now. "The open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair" (69) reveals that Louise's true feeling. In the following paragraph, Chopin uses "blue sky" (69) as a sign of hope; twittering "sparrows" (69) as a sign of happiness. The reader can confirm that her husband's death is only a temporary hurdle and she recovers quickly from the grief. Now she looks hopefully to the future, future of independent and well deserved freedom.
