Jorge Estrada English Section 3 Option 1 3/21/2018 The Book Thief , is a fictional novel by Markus Zusak that takes place in Molching, Germany during the Holocaust. The book is narrated by death and the author uses the bold face technique to foreshadow what is going to come in the near future. This is a great way to include messages that suggest later occurrences , and to use certain words to symbolize a big theme or how a character feels. Death also uses colors to represent how people die. He also tells the story of a girl called Liesel Meminger who is going to a town where she meets her foster parents, Rosa Hubermann and Hans Hubermann. Rosa would hold the instrument which made her feel the presence of Hans. It was the only thing that created a sense safety for her and could remember how happy he was. “Rosa Hubermann was sittings on the edge of the bed with her husbands accordion tied to her chest”(p.429)She also recalls his positive outlook on life and uses it to help her go through those tough nights of just thinking if he was going to return home safe.This also helped liesel realize how much Rosa loved her father. Rosa would sleep with the accordion . This made her feel hopeful and comfortable that one day Hans will come back home to see his family and that she was going to be able to spend more time with him until the day of the bombings that will occur on Himmel Street. The accordion represents lots of memories and how it saved his life. “She removed the injured instrument and laid it next to Papa’s body. Here Papa.”(p.538) Liesel just lost the man who helped her with all her troubles and loved her with all of his heart. Lisel was saved because she was writing about her life in the notebook ILSA the mayor’s wife gave her.The world had just lost a great man who was fighting to protect his family. When Liesel first arrives at The Hubermann household she recalls he eyes that looked like metal melting and the passion and kindness that she received when she arrived. He was a great example of a parent. As she was taken away she places the accordion next to Hans body and the instrument represents his entire life. It also connects him and Max’s Father. Lisel loves him and appreciates him for everything he has done for. He was not afraid when death came and took him. He helped max because he didn’t want to see another person die or get injured due to his errors. Hans was the person that Lisel could rely on the most and felt protected
