Ayesha Patel Though Piece 2- Between the World and Me 1. Te-Nehisi Coates summarizes the work of historians to demonstrate the lingering effects of slavery and racism on modern America. Did you find his use of history effective or persuasive? Segregation and discrimination changes a lot of things for people, changes their standard of living, their everyday life and changes their way of thinking. Our culture is shaped by racism. We grew up learning about the history and how the superior ones mistreated the old people. Ta-Nehisi Coates is being effective because he is showing us some of the parts of history that we never learned about. It is the duty of our elders to educate us about the history so that we can learn from it. Coates mentioned, that because of what Malcolm wrote and protected, the beauty of black people, was never shown in movies or was written about in textbooks. Their society has always shown that the whites were always the important, from "Jesus to George Washington" (Coates, 43). Why is it that teaching the history of white people wasn 't questionable yet, it took ages for schools to teach about the Black history? He grew up learning that everything white was important and that it mattered more. Coates also talks about, how schools were evil and that they never taught them about the actual world and the black history. The reason that he always skipped class at Howard University is because he whatever he was looking for was not in the classroom but was in the library. Coates stated, "I wanted to pursue things, to know things" (48). This explains his curiosity and interest towards the truth and the black history. History is one of the most important subjects for the student to develop their thinking and helps them figure out the society better and why the society is the way it is. Our history has shaped our society and culture that we live in and if we start to ignore it, the future generations will never discover why the society they live in is the way it is and they wouldn 't be able to learn from it and take precautions to make this world a better place to live
In the century where African-Americans had no rights and were highly discriminated, two men set out to make a new lifestyle for each other. Those two men where Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X. Frederick Douglass was a slave when he began to learn to read. Malcolm X was in prison when he began to learn how to read, he was in prison because he was an activist civil right. The author is clear with the content and has no fear of telling the truth just as Malcolm X expressed himself. Malcolm 's character is strong and full of expression good and bad, Malcolm uses every inch of his time to become the exact person he wishes to be and strives to have the knowledge of whatever may be unknown. He uses many rhetorical devices proficiently to show that black people and other minorities can overcome segregation. Many African-Americans have been oppressed so much that it is only so much a person can take. They start to give up, but King encourages them that things will eventually change. Blacks have fought to the point where they probably do not have the energy anymore and are tired of waiting. King eventually explains that if they do not keep fighting for what they believe in, then this oppression will never get solved. He also says that the clergymen should recognize the black demonstrators of Birmingham and give them credit for what they have fought for. Not only black people, but white people too. Unlike Washington, Dubois was born a free man and lived in the North in a predominately white area in an integrated community. He was very intelligent and excelled in the local schools he attended. However, it wasn’t until he attended Fisk University in Tennessee where he encountered his first issue dealing with racism and the Jim Crow laws. This experience is what shaped his ideas and philosophies on black people and their oppression. Dubois went back to the north to continue his education, focusing on the racial injustice and how to build equality for African Americans right then. After being the first black man to receive his PhD from Harvard University, he wrote his dissertation “The Suppression of the African Slave-Trade to the Unites States of America” which was one of his first academic works. Dubois was a powerful scholar and was headstrong as well. He believed that Washington’s idea would only help to continue the oppression of blacks from white people. Dubois advocated for a right now change. He created a civil rights agenda to work towards advocating equality for African Americans. He argued that Washington’s idea seemed “...well-nigh impossible…” (539). Dubois was an integrationist; he believed that there had to be a stand now, not later and that Washington’s philosophy was more of a submission to the oppression instead of a stand against it. Childhood is supposed to be one of the happiest times of your life, the simple virtue, sometimes oblivious to the real world that adults always talk about, for Malcolm X he never had the good fortune to be able to ignore the truth, the truth of prejudice and injustice of his country and town that he lived in. When Malcolm X was younger a significant amount of racial biases were put into place against him, his teacher for example, one of the most powerful examples of this text that is talked about a lot, Malcolm X’s conversation with his teacher Mr Ostrowski “Mr. Ostrowski looked surprised, I remember, and leaned back in his chair and clasped his hands behind his head. He kind of half-smiled and said, 'Malcolm, one of life's first needs is for us to be realistic. Don't misunderstand me now. We all here like you, you know that. But you've got to be realistic about being a nigger. A lawyer - that's no realistic goal for a nigger”( pg. 38) This experience with his teacher stuck to Malcolm as one of the first clear voiced memories of racism. Later in the book he talks about being proud that he overcame all of the people that doubted him, but he still internalized all the memories from his youth into who he is when he gets older. Malcolm X in a way pretends that he doesn’t care about some of these memories; that they don’t affect him. Although why would be bring them up later in the book, if it had gotten over it? I’ve seen racism on a day to day basis, and I know how slavery has had long lasting effects on the advancements of the black community. It was compelling however to learn some of the logistics and facts of his argument and to understand even more how the government segregated people of color. I was pleased that he made this book promoting the truth and backing it with facts that a lot of white people like to deny. I feel it is Caucasians people duty to try and help educated other Caucasian people on the injustices in America and I applaud him for that. He was extremely well educated on the topic of his book and mentioned some upsetting and surprising facts and terms. I was able to learn about the de facto segregation I had been living in my entire life and exactly why.
