Daulton Peetz Dr. Engle ENG 210-05 4 April 2024 Imagine living in a world where we sacrifice individuality to gain equality, where freedom is surrendered for uniform lives. Is this potentially the direction we are heading now, and it was predicted by the author of “Harrison Bergeron” in 1961? While I don’t find this to be the case, there are noticeable connections between the story and how things are happening in our lives today. Kurt Vonnegut’s, “Harrison Bergeron” uses a futuristic dystopian society to push the theme of differentiating equality versus equity, symbols to explore the dangers of totalitarianism when giving away liberties, and a plot constructed to draw parallels to historical dystopias while also connecting to modern societal issues. …show more content…

For example, in the article “Equality and Equity,” Professor John Laird (as cited in Raphael), writer of the book The Device of Government, states, “Most equalitarian arguments,” he says, “are about equity rather than about equality, and seldom do much more than warn us against arbitrary, that is, against inequitable inequality” (4). Therefore, he argues that when people push for equality, they are usually advocating for fairness and justice, which is equity rather than equality. This relates to the story because, in a dystopian world where all the people in charge are so focused on equality, people are losing their liberty and creativity. Instead, they should be prioritizing equity to allow individuals to start in a fair place while still having the chance to express their uniqueness, which ultimately defines what makes a person a person.
