Who is Hamlet? This is a question that I asked myself frequently while reading Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Hamlet is a very complex character, not only to other characters in the play, but to the reader as well. He has an intriguing personality that makes critical thinking very important while reading the play. The ethics of Hamlet are very questionable due to his inconsistency. It is not directly stated in the text if Hamlet is a good or bad person. It is up to the reader to decide what kind of person Hamlet is depending on their personal experiences and how they relate to him. There are many personality traits that could be associated with Hamlet, even some that contradict each other. Hamlet is obviously knowledgeable, which you can …show more content…
The first death he is directly responsible for is Polonius’, the one that shows Hamlet’s recklessness. This then leads to the death of Ophelia, since she goes crazy when Polonius dies and results in her falling in the river. Next, he gets Rosencrantz and Guilderstein murdered. Finally, he is responsible for almost every death in the last scene of the play. He directly kills Laertes and Claudius, and it’s basically his fault that his mother dies since she drank the cup of poison that was intended for him to drink. If he feels guilty about these deaths you may say they don’t make him a bad person, but that’s the question at hand. He may feel guilty about Polonius’ death but not show much emotion due to his depression. He directly says that he doesn’t care about the deaths of Rozencrantz and Guilderstein, but blames that on them deserving – which is true due to all the spying they did. Revenge seems common for the time period and it would not be unusual for Hamlet to want revenge over two people that betrayed him. As for the final deaths in the play, Hamlet also dies in this scene so he does not have much action. Though he does save Horatio from committing suicide, which could help the argument that he does have good
The Search for an Honorable Leader in Hamlet and Macbeth Hamlet clearly defines a good leader in this passage in Hamlet; "Look here, upon this picture, and on this, The counterfeit presentment of two brothers. See, what a grace was seated on this brow; Hyperions' curls; the front of Jove himself; An eye like Mars, to threaten and command; A station like the herald Mercury New-lighted on a heaven-kissing hill; A combination and a form indeed, Where every God did seem to set his seal To give the world assurance of a man." Act III Sc. IV   ; He states that an individual must attain the qualities: grace, leadership, well roundedness, and reverence. Using Hamlet's definition,
...became a man, he is still left with uncertainty that ultimately results in his death. Unfortunately, this uncertainty of Hamlet's is one that cannot be overcome. Hamlet is a story of realizing that the world is not what we thought it was, that everything is not good, and that there are bad people in the world. It is a story about searching for the meaning behind it all and about trying to figure out how to make a decision. It is a story about becoming a man and Hamlet is the kind of character that keeps us enthralled until the very end.
Hamlet, of the play, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, is a young man with many distinctive characteristics. He is the loving and beloved son of Hamlet, the deceased King of Denmark. He is talented in many ways, as actor, athlete, and scholar. Prince Hamlet draws upon many of his talents as he goes through a remarkable metamorphosis, changing from an average, responsible, young Prince to an apparently mad, raging son intent upon avenging his father’s untimely death.
Hamlet is the Renaissance man who is well rounded in all areas. He has a tremendous acting abilities, and he is a scholar who analyzes everything and is very philosophical, as was shown in his assessment of life in the "To be, or not to be" soliloquy. Hamlet's philosophical side is also brought to light in the prayer scene. At this point he has the opportunity to kill Claudius while he is attempting to repent. However,
In the play Hamlet, the young prince never does have the chance to become king. Shortly after his uncle Claudius dies, so does young Hamlet. Therefore, many readers wonder whether the prince would have made a good king. Hamlet would indeed make a great king due to his compassion, loyalty, and intelligence.
Delving into the character of King Claudius in Shakespeare’s tragedy, Hamlet, we find a character who is not totally evil but rather a blend of morally good and bad elements. Let’s explore the various dimensions of this many-sided character.
When Hamlet is in the presence of certain people, he acts differently, he acts like any other normal individual, he is smart, he is able to thoroughly think about every plan or idea he has and he is fully aware of his surroundings.
Hamlet is a play written by William Shakespeare in 1601. The play follows a young prince named Hamlet. Who returns home from school and discovers that his father has died, his uncle has married his mother, and ends up meeting the ghost of his father. The play has been a success since its release, having been performed in a run since its first production. Hamlet’s main enemy in this play is shown as the Uncle, who Hamlet learns from his father’s ghost early on killed his father. Hamlet’s worst enemy according to some scholars, is himself. Hamlet seems to do nothing but get stuck in his head for almost the entire play until he’s finally faced with his own mortality and therefore must act or defy his father’s wishes. When Hamlet
William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a tragic play. Most of the characters in the play have selfish motives at heart. Lust, greed, pride, and revenge are just a few sins that are committed in the play. There are few instances within the play that show goodness and kindness. Hamlet has so many people around him trying to bring him down, but he had one friend that was loyal to him, and that was Horatio.
He also committed the moral sin of killing his own brother and taking his wife. Claudius also deprived Hamlet of his rightful kingship. In addition, Hamlet now knows that his love of his mother is corrupted since she is affectionate towards his enemy. Hamlet should have acted decisively and killed Claudius as soon as possible after the Ghost told him to avenge his murder. But then comes the indecisive character in him that thinks it, though.
is revealed in conversation with his mother, is a negative one and that is anger.
I thought Hamlet was a selfish, self-centered, weak and crazy person. How can you call a person a hero after killing friends and family in order to get what one wants? Hamlet can be a very smart and noble person but in parts of the play he exhibited actions that are completely opposite of the person he can be. He acted with a sense of madness that made me think he was actually going mad. He acted obnoxious and annoying to other characters in the play.
In the play Hamlet, Hamlet has many different personality traits. Three of these characteristics are that Hamlet is depressed, clever, and hesitant. Throughout the play you can see these characteristics in Hamlet many times.
Hamlet by William Shakespeare is one of the world’s most revered literature. The main character, Hamlet, is arguably one of the most intriguing characters the playwright ever developed. Hamlet is daring, philosophical, mentally unstable at times, and clever. Throughout the play though, these characteristics change and/or diminish as Hamlet is put through a plethora of unfortunate events. His father is murdered by Claudius, his mother soon after marries Claudius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern betray him, and his girlfriend most likely commits suicide. While Hamlet is incredibly philosophical, indecisive, and full of resentment in the beginning of the play, he becomes violent, instinctive, caring and sympathetic towards the end of the play.
..., yet seems sad. Hamlet indicates he feels sickness in his heart, but he has resigned himself to the idea of death and no longer fears the unknown of the afterlife. The play does not make it clear as to how or why Hamlet has this shift in emotions. Earlier in the play, Hamlet seemed obsessed with himself and his love for his family. However, as the play draws to a conclusion, Hamlet appears sympathetic towards others, yet still doesn’t seem to take responsibility for killing Polonius. In contrast though, Hamlet does appear to become in shock over the death of Ophelia. That is quite the contrast in emotions.
