How Is Cyrano A Romantic Hero

Have you ever done something heroic, but let a friend take credit?How did it make you feel? Good, but a tad bit bitter and sad? Or how about being in love with someone and watching them love someone else?I think everyone can agree that is one of the most heartbreaking things of all. But What about both at the same time?That’s the plot of the interesting tale of Cyrano De Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. It tells the tale in which the main character Cyrano, is in love with his cousin, Roxane. Cyrano is a great person, and a classic romantic hero. He is brave, kind, smart, and great with words. The only barrier that stops him from confessing his love for her is his nose. It is extremely big and is his biggest flaw (in his opinion). But besides

his big nose, there is another obstacle in the way: she loves another man named Christian.

Christian is great, but he has a hard time expressing his feelings to Roxane. Whenever he talks to her all he can say is that he loves her, and although he is brave, he is not the brightest. Seeing his friend struggle, Cyrano offers to help Christian by writing letters to Roxane, pretending to be him. Little does Christian know that Cyrano is speaking from his heart, and that he also is in love with Roxane. Together they form one perfect guy, Cyrano with the brains( writing the letters) , Christian with the brawn ( basically just being handsome). But one day when Roxane visits the soldiers with food, Christian realizes that Cyrano is in love with Roxane. Cyrano denies it profusely, but Christian knows he is lying He tells Cyrano to tell Roxane the truth about the letters then let her decide who she loves.Cyrano lies and tells Christian that Roxane chose him. All of a sudden, Christian gets shot and is dying. Cyrano lies and tells christian that he told her and she chose him so he would die happy. .About a decade later, Cyrano is walking in the street, and by this time in his life he has several enemies. One of these enemies drops a wooden board from a window on

his head. His head starts bleeding,and he is severely injured, but is still determined to see roxane. He travels to her house and has a conversation with her as he is literally on his deathbed. As he is dying, he recites one of the letters and in that moment Roxane realizes that it was Cyrano who wrote the letters all along. Cyano dies and the play closes with Roxane crying in the dark, saying “It was always you.”. Throughout the book, Cyrano is portrayed as a classic idealistic. He always does the right thing and shows bravery, integrity, and selflessness. Idealism requires integrity, courage, and self sacrifice.
Cyrano De Bergerac is the definition of an idealist.

Mirriam webster defines an idealist as “An attitude of a person who believes that it is possible to live according to very high standards of behavior and honesty”.Cyrano lives his life with high standards and always does what he believes to be right.. To me, integrity is choosing how you live your life based on your moral standards, not just on how it will benefit you. He shows his artistic integrity by refusing to sell his work for money. He believes that his poetry is from the heart and cannot be bought or sold. He doesn’t want to be tied down by the powerful chains of money and its effects.(378)For example when De Guiche offers to help him sell his play, but have the person change a few lines cyrano exclaims, “ Impossible, Sir, my blood curdles at the thought of having a single comma changed.” (Act 2 pg.378) I think that this is an admirable trait to have, because it's gutsy and takes a lot of courage to not to accept

money.

Like I was saying before, Cyrano is also called brave. In as early as the second scene of the play he fights off a hundred men to protect his friend. Everyone is very shocked and impressed by this. Roxane questions him about it and wants to know all the details. Another way Cyrano demonstrates his courage and bravery is by getting into a sword fight with Valvert, all because of some comments about his nose. What’s even more impressive about this scene, besides the fighting of course, is that he is also composing a ballad at the same time. He even says to valvert in the beginning of the fight, “ I’m going to compose one as I fight with you, and when I come to the last line, I’ll draw blood” (Act 1 pg 365)This demonstrates his brilliant mind as well as his heroism.
Above all other traits, Cyrano’s most prominent one is his selflessness. He always puts others before himself, no matter what the consequence. Throughout the whole book, he writes letters as christian to roxane and never tells her he loves her, even though it’s killing him.This just shows what a good friend Cyrano is and that he puts Christian’s desires before his own. Even when he is literally on his deathbed, he pretends that it was Christian who wrote the letters because that's how good of a person he is.Even when Roxane says, “ Iv;e only loved one man, and i've lost him twice!” he denies it. If that’s not dedication, I don’t know what is.
In conclusion, the play Cyrano De Bergerac is an excellent one,filled with several life lessons. It shows how true beauty is about what’s on the inside and that if you love someone, you should tell them before it’s too late. It demonstrates the idea of idealism, and what idealists are like. But mostly it shows Idealism requires integrity, courage, and self sacrifice.
