How Is Atticus Finch A Good Role Model

Few characters have been as distinguishable as Atticus Finch. He represents morality and reason in the book and at the end of the book you see how perceptive and keen he is on every detail. Atticus is very staunch on his views on racism and teaches his children his values and be better people when they’re old enough to understand. Mr. Finch is a character that is role model, more than meets the eye, and has strong conviction in his belief. Mr. Finch is a man that is able to show incredible self restraint, impartiality to those other would deem inferior, and is often seen as the voice of reason. An example of how Atticus is the voice of reason was when Atticus’ son, Jem, overhears a neighborly old woman calling his father no better than the “niggers and the trash he works for”(Lee 102), This infuriates Jem and he takes a baton and destroys all of her Camellia Bushes. However. one day a rabid dog attacks their community and Atticus is forced shoot the dog as it would have harmed anyone. His children are shocked as they thought he was just a mundane man. Seeing this Jem gives Atticus new respect and says “...I wouldn’t care if he couldn’t do anything-I wouldn’t care if he couldn’t do a blessed thing.”(Lee 95). Another trait is how perceptive he is. It’s mostly during Tom Robinson’s case when the alleged woman that was raped said that assailant held her down with his left hand. However, when Robinson lifted his left hand it was torn up due to getting it caught in a cotton gin and tore all the tendons.
