How Is Atticus Finch A Good Man

A good man can be considered brave, intelligent, and moral. In Harper Lee’s book To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch, the town lawyer of Maycomb, Alabama represents all 3 character traits. He clearly displays how good of a man he is in numerous ways.
Atticus Finch is a good man because he is courageous in many ways. First of all, he defended a coloured male named Tom Robinson in court. Atticus learns what happened between Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell and decides to prove the truth. Defending Tom Robinson is not dangerous for himself, but his family also. Alabama has always been a racist town and Atticus Finch has been trying to improve it. This proves how brave he is to do what is right.
Another reason Atticus Finch is a brave man is because he saved his children from a rabid dog. The dog was clearly a danger to his family and so he had to bring out a gun. His children learn that their father has not used a gun in several years. But since this moment was so crucial, he brought out the gun and shot the dog once. Atticus decided to shoot the dog once so he would not cause a scene. In the text it says “I guess he decided he wouldn't shoot ‘till he had to, and he had to today.” (Lee) This clearly shows how courageous Atticus is because he saved his children …show more content…

To start, Atticus Finch is a moral man because he believes in the right thing. In the text it says “Mrs. Dubose, a racist and old lady who lives near the Finch’s house, tells Jem and Scout that Atticus is not “better than the niggers and trash he works for” (Lee 135). Jem’s neighbour also calls Atticus a “Nigger lover”. Jem gets very angry with Mrs.Dubose and ruins her garden. However, Atticus did not punish Jem. Instead, he tells Jem to go to her house everyday for half an hour and read to Mrs.Dubose. This proves how Atticus is moral because he did not use violence to punish Jem but instead punished him in a way that still helps
