How Is Abortion Morally Permissible?

Abortions have always been a very controversial topic. Recently, it has even become a very polarizing topic for many Americans. The topic of my research paper will be an in depth discussion of the morality and legality of abortions. The stance I will be taking on this issue is that abortion is morally permissible thus it should be legalized within the United States. In my argument, I will be engaging with Thompson and Marquis’ papers and some other resources.
To begin, I will not be debating the question of personhood when it comes to the fetus. That debate is a mostly scientific debate and I don’t think that I have the qualifications to really determine that. So, I will automatically assume that the fetus is a person at the moment of conception. Another thing that I will like to make a note of before I begin is that I am only talking about pregnancies that are brought about when a woman consents to having sex. Thus, pregnancies due to rape and such will not be discussed because that is a totally different can of worms that will go much beyond what can be accomplished in the page limit. …show more content…

The rights are the rights of the mother and the rights of the fetus. No one else should have rights in this because their life is directly impacted by the pregnancy. The mother wants the right to decide what is going on in her own body and the fetus wants the right to use the mother’s body as it’s home for nine months. I believe that the mother’s rights outweigh the rights of the fetus. Since it’s the mother’s life that will be forever changed. The mother is sacrificing her body and her life for this fetus.
